That's perfect, I'll try those settings.I'll try taking a shot with a lighter and a candle flame. For my application, I just need the flame so the rest of the background, including the candle, can be underexposed so I'll try everyone's suggestions to undeexpose. Thanks!!!

Well the flame in you pic is also "white", not my desired yellow. I'll try your white paper trick. I do have a midtone card I can try too.

I have a K10D and am trying to photograph candle light, or a cigarette lighter flame but can't get the desired results. I use a tripod, and no flash of course. ALL the pics I take render the flame as a "white" flame, instead of the yellowish tint I desire. I've tried from slow (0.5s) to fast (200) shutter speeds, and varying f/stops (f4.0-f11), and varying ISO (200-1600). I also used Auto, Shady, Cloudy, white balance. I've google on tips to see suggestions, and those pages render the flame white also. Any ideas?

At one point, my captured images had IMGPnnnn.DNG names, where nnnn were numeric values. Now files are named _IGPnnnnn.DNG. Why the change, and can I control the naming convention? I searched this forum to no avail.

I've RTFM'ed several times, and even bought the K10D book, which goes beyond the manual. I just had a brain fart when I posted this.

When shooting panos I read that I should disable autofocus for the shots. So how do I do that with the K10D for autofocus lenses?

I'm not an expert.

Try shooting in Av mode at the lowest f/stop, or one after it, ISO of at least 400, and fluorescent WB. Since you're shooting RAW you can just use AWB if you want. This is without a flash.

AE-L and pano shots

Oh I see, regarding AE-L for one shot. I guess that feature is used when setting exposure different from the main subject, then focusing on the main subject to shoot. In this case, the AE-L will keep the orig. exposure. Make sense now.

Your suggestion is valid of course, but again, the AE-L tool is there so why not use it to do what you suggested?

But isn't this exactly what I "can" do to keep consistent exposure? IOW, the tool is there and I'm trying to use it. The question remains, why does it unlock at some point if I'm pressing the shutter within the set metering time of either 10s or 30s?

AE-L and pano shots

I'm tying to learn to take several pics on my K10D to later combine them into a pano shot in PS CS3. One advice I consistently read is to of course have constant exposure. To do this I press the green button in hyper-M mode to set the exposure (correct exposure or not is irrelevant for now), and then use the AE-L function to lock the exposure. However after 5-6 shots, the AE-L (*) disappears, even when I set my metering time to 30s. What am I missing so I keep the AE-L for the duration of the shots, however many they are?

Using AE-L for pano shots?

I'm trying to learn how to shoot multiple images to combine them into one pano using PS CS3's stitching tool. One advice I keep reading is to of course keep the exposure consistent between the shots. Make sense correct? I'm trying to do this via the following method...
- Use hyper-M mode
- Use the green button to set the exposure (whether correct exposure or not is irrelevant
for now)
- Use the AE-L button to lock the exposure
- Start taking my shots in portrait mode from left to right, overlapping by 25%

However, after the 5th or 6th shot the AE-L unlocks! Why? How can I keep it locked for the whole duration? I set my metering time set to 30s. Thanks!

The cheapest I've found a genuine Pentax D-LI50 battery for is $45, and to me, that is still pretty steep for a "battery". How are 3rd party batteries, as long as they match the specs of course. Can I use regular AA batteries too if I want?

How to Control Flash in long exposures?

I e-mailed Pentax regarding this feature, and believe it or not, someone responded with the following...

(my question)
Is it possible to use trailing curtain sync with the AF 540 in wireless mode? It works just as expected when flash is on the shoe.

(from Pentax personnel)
I have tested this and in all sync modes (leading-curtain, High-Speed
and trailing-curtain)the AF-540FGZ when used off-camera in Wireless mode
fires as the shutter curtain opens. I have tested with the flash in both
SL1 and SL2 modes, and with the pop-up flash set to either Controller or
Master. I will forward this along to our Digital Products Manager as a
product enhancement suggestion.

Another thread recommended the Sigma flashes. Just curious to why you don't recommend them.
