Tools:

SKILLSAW: A portable cutting tool used to make boards too short.

BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

WIRE WHEEL: Cleans paint off bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench. Also removes fingerprints and hard-earned calluses from fingers in about the time it takes you to say, 'Oh shoot'. Will easily wind a tee shirt off your back.

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

CHANNEL LOCKS: Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

HACK SAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VISE GRIPS: Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost exclusively for igniting various flammable objects in your shop - particularly handy on the grease inside the wheel hub while removing a bearing race.

TABLE SAW: A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

BAND SAW: A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut large pieces into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge. Also excels at amputations.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST: A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of all the crap you forgot to disconnect.

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER: A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR: A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

PVC PIPE CUTTER: A tool used to make plastic pipe too short.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent to the object you are trying to hit. Also effective fingernail remover.

UTILITY KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door. Works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes.

S. O. B. TOOL: Any handy tool that you grab and throw across the garage while yelling 'S.. of a b....' at the top of your lungs. It is also, most often, the next tool that you will need.

There is the age-old argument about which is better to upgrade; many people believe drills come and go but legacy bits are forever. There is always some excitement to chucking up a new bit, especially if going from flint to say, stainless, and seeing if the hole is up to snuff, however. If it puts a smile on your face, you made the right choice.

It does make a fine boat anchor, though the Hughes marketing team does not list it in the specs.

I took one of those on a hole-drilling vacation. Silly me. It was too big for the regular bag, so I had to get a special drill bit bag made up. Not only that, it is a little hard to hold in low speed situations - it has no tripod collar. Overall, I would recommend the Hughes Quad-Lobe Diamond-Point Sandstone Spinner. Lighter, sharper and several thousand cheaper.

It looks pretty sharp but I have perhaps seen sharper. That is a major criterion for lens quality.

The square format seems to have died off as it is not quite right for vertical studs or horizontal joists. They were handy to have when you wanted to hold it all together with a carriage bolt, though. Seems to be an antiques roadshow item now, unfortunately.

Forest Lawn, Glendale.

Danny Gans started as a pro baseball player, and has a small role in Bull Durham as a third baseman. After an injury he became a comedian and entertainer, mostly in Las Vegas, where was the Entertainer of the Year, with the Show of the Year. He also has a marker in Palm Memorial, Las Vegas.

Shirley Ann Mount Hufstedler was a lawyer. After studying Journalism in college, Selene Walters was a popular model of the 1940s, adorning the cover of several magazines. This led to her acting career beginning with a minor role in the Betty Hutton film "Incendiary Blonde" (1945), followed with Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's "The Road to Utopia" (1945), then "The Kid from Brooklyn" (1946), "The Lady in the Iron Mask" (1952), "Beau James" (1957), "Senior Prom" (1958), "The F.B.I. Story" (1959) and "Jet over the Atlantic" (1959). During the 1960s, she wrote a popular entertainment column called "On the Scene with Selene".

When I don't know what I'll be drilling, I go with the variable-diameter bit. If I want consistent holes and I can take my time, I go with a fixed-diameter bit. Most people will not notice the difference in hole geometry, but once you get the technique down, it is far preferable to use a fixed diameter. Don't forget to turn off the drill while changing bits - it really cuts down on the flying sawdust problem.

I've never seen a poll that was correctly worded to avoid ambiguity or other issues. And, "average" on the scale of 1-10, would be about a 5 not an 8. And, as mentioned, answers are mostly subjective, so there is that divergence. Further, one lens might be great at certain things and poor in others, so there is that complication.

Bottom line, polls can be fun but they are mostly inconclusive.

I had and liked the Tamron. I would recommend a monopod if using it for long periods of time.

I always thought of the noise as focus confirmation :-)
