Don't get too much rain where I'm at, yesterday was the first day it had rained in a long time, and I got a shot of a rain cloud rolling in over the Wet Mountains. It was edited today, didn't do too much to it, just used Digital Camera Utility 5, before resizing.

Can you help me identify these marks on my lens filter?

Kolari Vision has contacted me back, they believe itís oxidization of the filter. They have offered to replace the filter for me, as this filter is covered by a lifetime warranty.

Apparently thereís no way to really fix it, in fact Kolari Vision, said even trying to wash it off with water might just make it worse. Kolari Vision has updated this filter to have an AR, (antireflective) coating on it, that should protect the new updated filters from this type of oxidization.

Eleven Pentax "specific / distinctive features" : do they impact your photography ?

Keep shutter speed, twice the frame rate. So if I shoot at 30fps and keep the shutter speed at 1/60th that should be ideal right? Thatís the setting Iíve been using, on all 3 of my Pentax cameras, (K-x, K-01, 645Z)with a tripod, and Iím still seeing these artifacts, I thought it was from the line skipping.

When I bought my first Pentax camera a K-x, in body shake reduction was a huge selling point for me.

Never cared for DNG raw format, as its point of existence seems to be to guarantee a, “standard” as if PEF and other camera manufacturers native raw formats somehow don’t qualify as legitimate standards. The worry that the technology to enable you to read PEF and other raw formats would become lost to the sands of time, but DNG will survive forever. Seams belittling to a lot of the raw formats that are very well established by major camera makers.

I understand maybe if you have a really small camera company, why you would want a generic standard rather than a proprietary file format. But for a major camera manufacturer like Pentax they should feel justified in staying with their own well established, and well supported PEF format.

[Unless there is some other reason for DNG that I haven’t heard of. If someone knows of another reason for DNG other than to be a less proprietary and more generic standard I’d be curious to hear about it.]

My expectations for the K2, is that it like its predecessor, will have completely underwhelming video. Or at least it has better because I am going to be purchasing a Sony A7 III, and using an adapter for my Pentax lenses. I will be purchasing the A7 III just for its video capability, so it would be horrible if the K2 was the first Pentax camera that actually had real good video.

[If anyone has any information that would suggest that the K2 is actually going to have high-quality video let me know before I buy the Sony!]

As long as video is asked about, I'm good. I need higher bit-rate and better shake reduction during video.

Pentax developed a new advancement on the K-mount that allows for magnetic aperture, which is only really a benefit for video, plus a new lens motor that is even quieter then the DC motor, developing a motor that is even quieter than the DC is only going to be a practical benefit to video. These are 2 things that took some development time, plus it causes problems for backwards compatibility with the lenses that will have magnetic apertures, so introducing these features that only have benefits to videographers should indicate some serious commitment to video. Additionally, they've introduced continuous autofocus , (not just on demand) for video, even though it's very slow.

But without a higher bit rate, I can't consider Pentax a reasonable option for video.

Lens opinion: 18-35 vs 12-24 vs 20-40 vs 16-50

The 20-40 is my most used and currently my favorite lens.

I was looking at the Sigma 18-35, but then I came to realize that the 20-40 would see way more use because it is at a weight I wouldn't think twice about caring with me, (lighter than my 31mm) while the Sigma would be a chore for me to carry around.

The 20-40 has the best weight, and flare resistance out of the lenses you are looking at, it will also be compatible with continuous autofocus in video mode on Pentax's new cameras, (don't think the 16-50 will be, not sure about the 18-35 but probably not).

The 18-35 though not weather sealed would be best for lowlight out of the lenses you're looking at, for portraiture the 16-50, and for street photography the 20-40.

Subjectively concerning boca I'd say the Sigma has the worst, the 20-40 has the best, but as being not as bright as the 16-50, (after about 24mm) the 16-50 might be better for, "boca centric" work.

Here's an example of the 20-40's boca:
Neighborhood-Fence by Download-Happy-Face on DeviantArt

But besides that the 20-40 was designed to try to capture spatial presence, (I'm assuming nothing was lost in translation here) I found that very intriguing and thought that that may fit my photography style.

The Pentax 16-50 is meant to be a professional lens with a very useful zoom range, and some models, (particularly the earlier models) have problems with the autofocus giving out.

The Sigma 18-35 is meant to be an engineering marvel, the first 1.8 zoom with great optical sharpness while still remaining affordable, at the expense of: weight, zoom range, a bit of flair and some boca issues, (a bit busy at times and sometimes large outlines around the boca circles).
Some specimens do exhibit erratic focusing on some Pentax bodies however.

The 20-40 is meant to be light, and unique in its rendering, at the expense of zoom range, aperture size, and some sharpness. Some models, (particularly earlier models again) show low sharpness at some or multiple parts of the zoom range. Good copies of the lens should be sharp throughout the zoom range, so checking for decentering is advised.

Hope this was helpful and happy choosing :)

Picture 6 is my favorite. Urbex, (pictures of broken/dilapidated places and things) for some reason is always oddly interesting.

Chem trails! A few individuals associated with the government, have commented that they are putting aluminum particles, via jets, into the atmosphere to try to reflect back light, into space, to stop global warming. The government though still hasn't made any large press release admitting to or explaining any programs.

HD DA 20-40 buying tips please

Hi, the 20-40 is my most used and currently my favorite lens. I got mine for 696.95 with a $20 store credit and a three-year drop and spills warranty from Adorama. I passed on getting this lens from the used market at about $530 because of all the bad copies floating around. I figured if someone was getting rid of the lens it had a higher chance of being a bad copy. When I got my copy the felt on the lens cap was improperly installed and I had to get a replacement cap. But I did get a good copy of the lens! It is fair to say my copy is sharp wide open throughout the whole range.

This lens was designed to try to capture spatial presence, (I'm assuming nothing was lost in translation here) I find that very intriguing. My photographic style is abstract oriented meaning I emphasize space and motion over mass and volume. So learning what this lens was designed for I thought it would make a good companion for me.

To make sure you got a good copy just check for decentering as I believe that is the main reason for the poor performance of the bad copies.

Here is a mini tutorial I've made for you!

Oh my goodness, I just figured it out! The phrase, "Sometimes the rumors are true".

Has: 3 Mís, 4 Rís, 3 Sís, 3 Tís, and no less than 5 E's! That's a lot of repeated letters!
It just came to me like an epiphany... it's an anagram!

When you rearrange the letters it says, "Hot Summertime Treasure... Rose".

This obviously means that they will be a summertime release, (maybe in mid-summer when it's the hottest). The, "Treasure" will be a full frame camera, code-named, "Rose"! The term, "Rose" could in itself be an acronym, for what exactly I'm not sure, (Really Outrageous Super Elite)?

If anyone's got any extra insight on the meaning of this anagram please let me know... I think were on the cusp of breaking this whole thing wide open.

What Should Pentax Do?
Posted By SGOMMO7

What does Pentax need to do?

What I know is that I want to be able to do high quality video projects. I would love to have the ability to be able to put my money to a Pentax camera that is suitable for high grade video. Instead it appears I will sadly have no choice but to start buying into another system. It will have to be a mirror-less system so that I can still use my Pentax glass.

I would like to hold on for a while to see if Pentax can fully master video, but reading the latest comments from Pentax when they were asked about expanding their video capabilities by Adam they replied they were going to continue to think of themselves as a primarily stills oriented camera manufacturer.
That to me is a single that if I ever want to get good video I should probably be looking at another system.

I mean I could get one system for video, and keep my Pentax equipment for stills. But the times I most want video is when I'm out shooting stills. Such as if I want to capture the action of wildlife, sporting event,or birthday, for example: I'm taking pictures of a praying mantis and I notice it's getting ready to grab a moth, that is the time I want to have high-quality video at my disposal. And lugging two systems with me all the time and then trying to switch to the video system before the moment passes! Impossible!

So if I do buy a second system that can do video and stills, that will be the system I would be using all the time.

Right now Samsung's new camera looks like it will fit the bill. I just wish Pentax would give me a product that I could buy instead of a NX1 .

This is what I need, and it does not sound like I'm alone on this from reading the comments in this thread.

Is this what Pentax needs to do? I think so, my sister wanted a camera, and she wanted the camera to be able to record high quality YouTube videos for her YouTube channel. And without any Pentax camera offering continuous autofocus for self filming, severe Jell-O cam from poor shake reduction, and pronounced rolling shutter. She had to buy another system, she went with Panasonic. Now if Pentax offered a good DSLR for video than I could have set her up with a Pentax system rather than a Panasonic system. And in addition I wouldn't be looking at pouring my money into another system as well. In my experience lack of high-quality video on Pentax cameras has been the number one reason to buy into another system.

The point of a camera to me is: First -- image capture, Second -- capturing the moment, Third -- creating a visual work of art. Video capabilities expand all these criteria, and should therefore be embraced not trivialized.
