Got a new lens for the A7rii.
Though I still hate the camera, I got it for 2 reasons: eye autofocus, and 42megapixels. The lens i got is the 75mm f1.8. was debating in the 85mm samyang, or viltrox, but went with the smaller.

Though I love the 85, the 75 is rather unusual. It also helps me save a bit more to eventually get the 105mm 1.4 lens.

Did a selfie as the lockdown is keeping me from people at the moment

could use your advice, the sony users here.
i have the A7RII, and though i'm not enjoying it, i'm kind of stuck with it, so may as well utilize it to the best of its ability.
I have the Samyang 45 1.8 which is a great lens, but I mostly shoot portraits, thus i I need a portrait lens accordingly.
I also have the Samyang 135mm f2 manual focus, which is decent for outdoor stuff.

on my Pentax K1, I have the Pentax 77, Sigma 85 and 100mm macro. I am thinking of either selling the Pentax 77, or the Sigma 85 for the pentax, and getting either of the following for the sony:
Samyang 85mm 1.4 autofoucs
Viltrox 85mm 1.8
Samayang/rokinon 75mm 1.8

size doesn't really make much of a difference to me. Price, they are all around the same mark.

What I like about the 75 is that its got a switch for auto/manual focus on the lens
what i like about the viltrox is that it is a metal body, and upgrades can be done INTO the lens without the requirement of any additional pods
What I like about the 85 is that its at 1.4.

which would you choose and why?

I would like to travel (when we can again after pandemic) with a lighter body and size, yet with the lack of battery space, and only one memory card, the sony will have to stay behind while my pentax goes with me. therefore size doesn't really make much of a different to me here.

my two cents: save the cost on all of them, and take the 31mm ltd.
why?: its fast at 1.8. Its small and can easily fit anywhere. Its 'wide' enough for a standard shot. However, if you want it wider, learn to stitch panorama shots. Allowing you to shoot with the 31mm at f1.8, but with the look of something wider, like a 24mm, or 20mm, or even 14mm if you go crazy enough with enough stitches.

the cons to doing this:
- it can be time consuming. if your computer is not up to the task, this can be really painful. However, if you have a decent computer, you can easily do this within a few seconds.
- though you dont need a tripod, and can easily do this hand held, the issue with stitching (in my experience) dosn't translate well in night astro-photography. because it will require tripod, and keep moving things around, the stars are never in place long enough. so if you want a startrail with a wider sky, this may not be possible.
- the 31mm is not weather sealed. in iceland, you should carry with you lenses that are sealed as you never know.

the pro for this:
1- you are saving cost in buying another lens
2- you are saving space
3- if need be, finding an ND filter for 31 is relatively easy and affordable. So you can do day time cloud-trails or waterfall trailers over a prolonged period of time.

looking to pick up the FE 50mm 1.8 for my Sony A7RII.
sure, all i'm hearing are horrible reviews on the lens. Yet all I'm seeing are decent shots through the lens. Even youtube also indicates that it is a great lens with a horrible build quality.

if the results are decent, it can be made out of paper for all I care.

how bad is the lens, really?

mostly going to use it for portraits, and never for travel.

I'd be happy if they introduce these two lenses:
135mm f 1.8 (or similar)
20mm f1.8

historically speaking, pentax has been great at making things more compact. however, the recent stuff they have been making for the K1 and full frame stuff is rather large. Would prefer it if they keep things light and compact.

50mm lens for K1 suggestion?

Sure, 1.4 is a shallow depth of field that may not be the most usable in all settings, yet if it's perfectly usable on an 85mm lens, then there is no reason why it can't work in a 50mm.

As in, I use my 85mm 1.4 wide open all the time and I never suffer from soft images.

The difference between IN FOCUS BUT SOFT, vs MISSED FOCUS DUE TO SMALL DOF is not the same.

I believe the 50mm 1.4 that I have is known to have soft images wide open.

see, I have calibrated my lens using that spider cal thing (black/white with a scale on the side). Despite that, its still a haze and soft. so the issue isn't in it being dialed in accurately, but the lens it self is soft to begin with when shooting wide open.

maybe I have a bad copy?

and i'm guessing all takamur lenses are manual focus?

50mm lens for K1 suggestion?

Yeah, the DFA50 does sound like a keeper, but i have a hard time justifying its price when considering all other lenses i have are significantly lower in price (used or new). I dont mind the size. Just the price is keeping me from it.

the sigma 50mm may be a contender. Though i'm also hearing that its autofocus is not reliable. It would randomly switch between front focus, back focus, and spot on. That somewhat seems consistent with my Sigma 85mm. Though a great lens, i unfortunately have no control when the random front/back focus would take place.

50mm lens for K1 suggestion?

Hey folks,
so recently i'm wanting to fall back in love with a 50mm lens, yet its evident that i've been spoiled rotten with my collection of 31mm, 77, 85, 100, 135, and the 70-200 lenses that when i compare my SMC Pentax-FA 50mm F1.4, i'm unable to use the images wide open.
Sure, i can stop it down to maybe 2.8 or 3.5 before the images get usable.
as per reviews online, on the pentax forum, people seem to love its sharpness, but on other online forums, its a common complaint regarding soft wide open. And aside from the new 50mm lens, it seems that pretty much ALL other pentax branded 50mm have that issue. (except maybe the 55mm 1.4?)

do you have any experience with third party autofocus lenses that are 50mm or thereabouts that can be shot at 1.4 and be usable?

i'm not looking for surgically sharp lenses. decent focus is fine by me. But if its super soft, then I cant really do much with that image.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

also, i have the K1

PS: yes, i did search on the forum, but the latest updated threads are many years old now.

How do you manage family pictures?

I've given up on having my pictures taken when traveling, or with a group.
If I give my camera to anyone, somehow they manage to have me out of the frame, or everything else is in focus and not me.
So if I really want my picture, i keep it with cell phones.

its an issue with being a photographer, and i've grown to accept my fate. Even my photographer friends cant seem to get it right, so whatever.

But I once used to have an ULTRA wide camera lens, and also a moderate wide lens. So the 14mm Rokinon, and 24-70mm pentax do a decent 'selfie' if you flip it around, and shoot. It may distort things, but it also adds a bit of fun to the image. Thats the only way I was able to use my DSLRs to take my images in a group setting

hahah, tell me about it! I went from one guitar, to 16 guitars, down to 3 guitars.
after buying tons of random gear which were all great in their own right, I'm now down to three. 2 electrics, and one acoustic. Do I play them half as much as I should?

But each time I pick em up, they bring a smile to me for those 5 minutes I am playing em.
Really should plug em in and enjoy them some more. Maybe one day.

I need to figure out a way to knock down the greens on my A7RII. I'm using the muted color option on the camera (thats what I use for Canon and Pentax as well), and it works beautiful on other cameras...yet on the sony, its sickening saturated.

aside from shooting RAW, any other tips to knock down the green saturation in the body itself?

What are your thoughts for deciding to sell (or not)

my main reason to sell stuff that is camera related is to cluttered. I've gotten to a place where I've tried EVERY possible lens combination, and figured out their sweet spots, and where my personal sweet spots are. As in, since i'm now focusing primarily on portraits, I dont really need an ultra wide lens. Since I mostly shoot wide open and in low light areas, I dont need anything narrower than F2.8. Since I dont shoot wild life, I dont need anything longer than 200mm. Since I shoot primes, I dont need any of the zooms, etc.

As such, whatever doesn't tick the box for me has to go. So that relates to any crop lenses, any zoom lenses, and any crop sensor cameras such as the K5 and Kx that i've been trying to sell for a while now.

come to think of it, a 20mm 1.4, or 24mm 1.4/1.8 would be a brilliant addition to the K1 line.

not that i shoot wide anylonger, but maybe if i'm forcing distortion in portraits, it may come in handy.

the rokinon/samyang is actually the lens i'm using on the Sony. I dont mind manual focus, if there was a better focus peaquing available on pentax, like it is on the mirrorless system. If pentax refuses to release a 135 fast aperture lens, then i may eventually get a sigma 135 (or if rokinon/samyang) released an automatic 135 F2, then i may pick that up...

but that would only have to be on an A7RIII or something. Not liking my A7RII, and dont want to get the A7III.

I had the 85mm manual focus rokinon on pentax a while back. was a real pain to focus on anything that was shot wider than F4. so really no point getting a fast aperture lens if its manual focus (in my opinion)

the 135 really is missing in the pentax lineup.
That is pretty much the only reason i got a sony. If pentax releases a fast 135 prime (like F2, or F1.8) i'd sell the sony right away and keep the pentax K1 and the 135. quickly becoming my favorite focal length. alas, mine is attached to a sony :-/

I do have a personal bone to pick with any sport game. Be it soccer (football), or NFL football, hockey, basketball, wrestling etc.
each year they release a new version with better graphics, but the game mechanics stay the same...

maybe because i'm not a sports guy, i dont get it.

though, if you are in a video game store, those are also the ones found the easiest in the used section.

I eagerly await the Pentax 85mm 1.4 lens.

After that, the only other lens that will be missing from my kit would either be a 200mm f2 (use that through a sony body perhaps?) or a 200mm 2.8 (prime) through either a pentax or sony or whatever body.

Favorite lens for shooting food at a restaurant

Food photography is always a challenge for me. However, I usually get the best images via a 50mm 1.4, or a 100mm macro 2.8.

I usually try to photograph a portion of the food. I intentionally cut off parts of the plate, to include, maybe a hand, or a cup or something else. So the focal point in my food photography isn't the food itself, but rather the event of food, if that makes sense?

i wont be surprised if The Last of Us II and Ghost of Tsushima will be the LAST released on the PS4, and also available on PS5 as the first releases.

Both games constantly keep getting pushed back (for good reason too).

for what its worth, and maybe its me and i did something wrong, but the last of us kind irked me.
I enjoy exploring random corners for things. Behind a bookshelf, around a corner, under a table, etc. The last of us was the first game that wasted my time in randomly seaching for those things. For example, uncharted, you would find ammo or guns or whatever randomly lying around.

I get it. It is more realistic. It is post apocalyptic. Random treasure or stuff are NOT going to be lying around for me...but still i felt that i could have saved several hours not searching in vain.

again, as others have said, unless you are diving in the water, or rolling in the sand, your camera will be missed if you dont take it
