Source for new capacitor Metz 58AF2?

Hi everyone- thank you all for your suggestions and information.

Sadly, after working on it for a while I have concluded that the capacitor was not the problem and whatever it is, is beyond my capabilities. But as I was able to get a good replacement at a good price, I am officially declaring Mr. AF-2 Metz, to have passed over to e-waste .

He served well and fairly long, though I had ignored him for some time. At times, he was flashy and brilliant, at other times, with a little coaxing by the camera and his own circuitry, subtle and subdued. There were a few red eyes as long as he lived but mine are the only two now. :o

No flash in the pan, he will be remembered by all who knew him- really only me- as a hard working little fella that even if he whined every time I switched him on (had to be careful with my terminology there), he would eventually stop his whining and be ready to give his all. Until he couldn't.

R.I.P. old chum. You will be missed but were easily replaced- its a harsh world.

My K5 as well. I was never much impressed with the video and didn't even really try it with a K 3. I would just rather use a video camera for video.

Is Auto Shut Off a thing?

The cars do not do as well as they would in warmer weather of course but the technology and the batteries are improving every few months. At least according to the press releases and some reviews..

---------- Post added 11-18-20 at 09:50 PM ----------

Of course it may have been the battery but I would also not rule out that the circuitry detected some anomaly caused by condensation, going from the relatively humid indoors to the cold outdoors. In my job ( BC,before Covid) we lend data projectors to students and instructors and we warn them against this. A projector in this situation will often shut itself down until the temperatures and humidity have evened out internally. So I imagine it could well be the same with the camera.

Man, I have heard of computer bugs but that's ridiculous!

I am in awe of this restoration. I worked on hundreds of slide projectors but never wanted to tackle a camera.

I wonder if you can tell me which of your treatments, vinegar, nail polish remover or metal polish might be more appropriate for removing corrosion on a half-dozen camera tripods that were under a leaking air conditioning unit. Most if not all of the metal seems to be aluminum . None of it is terribly extensive but there is some on every one of the tripods and my first thought was just to go at it with a low speed drill and a wire brush on it.

I haven't actually pulled it apart because I wanted to see if the capacitor might be available before I go into the guts of it.

---------- Post added 11-18-20 at 09:02 PM ----------

I am pretty sure it is the capacitor as I take pretty good care of my gear and as far as I know have not bounced it around too much, and I know the capacitor is need to be charged and discharged periodically.

---------- Post added 11-18-20 at 09:03 PM ----------

Ah, I had not thought of that. At least I can pad the space if necessary.

I am afraid the only whining is coming from me, haha.

I have worked quite a bit with high voltage equipment and am careful when doing so. Before I get into something like that I generally we call a friend who had an electronic repair shop and had done much more of that than I ever did, and he did make a mistake with one of the old CRT televisions that blew his six foot four body right across the room. Fortunately only his pride was hurt

---------- Post added 11-18-20 at 09:10 PM ----------

Thanks! I will give that a shot before going to the disassembly option.

---------- Post added 11-18-20 at 09:13 PM ----------

Thank you! While I do not have such a power supply myself I can come to one. This gives me more hope than I had!

---------- Post added 11-18-20 at 09:16 PM ----------

That sounds like dream workbench but beyond my access. However the current limiter resistor was not something I would have thought of and will do some research on once have more information about the capacitor I am dealing where.

---------- Post added 11-18-20 at 09:19 PM ----------

Thank you...I will put that on the list as well. I have lots of quality rechargeable batteries.

Wow, that is discouraging about the Metz line. When I was researching my purchase it came down to the Metz and a very similar Pentax model. The Metz seemed more rugged, and I think it is, and cost a little bit less than the Pentax did.

For various reasons I did not use my flash for nearly two years. It would no longer charge up and that is on me to my everlasting shame!
I managed to get a reasonably priced rental unit which is serving me well. But I would like to try to repair my old Metz since we used to have such a strong bond between us! I am unable to find a North American source for the large discharge capacitor inside this Flash and I am wondering if anyone here might know where I could get hold of one.

Fingers crossed, and thank you if you have any insight.

Guessing the OP figured things out then.

Electronic devices can be pretty temperamental sometimes. Low voltage devices in particular like cameras are can have some affectations when something is a few millivolts off. Digital circuits are on/off ... yes/no. It is "right" or it isn't, unlike analogue electronics where a condition can be "close enough " to give an acceptable if not perfect result.

Marketing , distribution and talking to potential / new customers form a crucial triangle and each element carries the others. I have the same criticism of Blackberry phones, a product superior in many ways ( years ago, at least) but the other two aspects came up short.

---------- Post added 11-15-20 at 10:09 AM ----------

I cannot say I had ever thought about this issue but soon after I got my K5 and started stomping around a dense forest on a hot day the issue of heat and electronics surprised me with a sudden and unexpected camera shutdown.

---------- Post added 11-15-20 at 10:14 AM ----------

Of course not! That is like asking if holding your child while waiting in line for Santa is overloading.

---------- Post added 11-15-20 at 10:57 AM ----------

On the issue if visibility I just had a brilliant idea! Pentax could give every customer a Pentax red baseball hat and there would soon be a sea of red Pentax hats with a message of positivity and photographic greatness.....

Oh! Maybe not such a brilliant idea.....

I see that this has pretty much been solved and at the risk of sounding like I'm making an IT Crowd joke, I want to promote the idea of simply rebooting laptops and PCs when something does not work quite right.

For context, I work at a university and for some reason have a lot of trouble convincing some users that laptops in particular need to be rebooted periodically for them to function properly. The first time I ran across that I had a 5-minute argument with a professor who claimed that because she had a Mac, she never had to reboot. In fact she had not restarted her laptop for 6 months. After I convinced her to try it, all her troubles went away!

We do not have double deckers where I live but in a massive snow dump in Ontario, Canada, several years ago I and a few other passengers got out to push the city bus away from the curb and into the lane.

We probably were not supposed to do that.

Eyes wide open?

For me, it depends on the situation. If I am in a wide open area with lots of people around, say a festival of some type if any of you can still remember those, I have both eyes open and close the left one when I go to compose the shot. I think this way I and more aware of peripheral action or colour then they catch my fancy . If I am in a more enclosed area even with a lot of people, I pretty much scan with my human eyeballs and then bring the camera up to them when I see something to shoot.

That's great! When you do your research I think that you will find Pentax has a larger value component for the money than others. The only drawback I have ever seen with going Pentax is that there are not as many third-party accessories made for it. If you do go for 3rd party gear stick to major names and you will do well.
