Arrrgg! I went into handfuls CCs in NYC over the weekend and when I mentioned the AF 360 they all looked at me like I was a martian.

Mike, really nice! Thanks especially for all the information, which is extremely helpful to me in my quest for getting better indoor shots with the K10D. I hadn't considered getting a flash, but now the Metz and a diffuser look like a very good investment.

I hope it wasn't the 70 decibel Sony shutter that triggered a landslide : 0

(Trying to figure out which smiley to put here. I'm making a joke about the Sony's loud shutter but I feel your pain about the demise of your camera. Mother Nature trumps all.)

DPR and their lies

I spoke of the K10D because that's where I have experience as it relates to something I own, but my opinion of P.A.'s Pentax reviews hold for his whole list overall. They're not so different from the general reviewing world in bias, certainly not as far as holding products up to Canon/Nikon familiarity, and where they are I certainly wouldn't chalk it up to $$$$ as you do

Then you need to take notice of them. Then you'd know the good ones are so much more than useless spec droning, after they mention the specs. Read past that and finish the reviews, then comment.

I didn't insult you at all. Don't take it personally. The fact is that if you think what you've read about dpreview gives you enough knowledge about the site to say that money has caused biased reviews, you don't know enough. That makes it a lazy, unfounded accusation (barely qualified by "perhaps" and "I think", and please note I didn't call YOU lazy, just the argument). His personal bias causes biased reviews that are barely more biased than anyone else's. Read all those reviews you skip, as you've said, to find this out. You don't need to understand techno-babble to weigh in on this, but if you skip too much you ought to stay out of the debate. Again, this is not an insult, so don't take it as such.

If you could build up a site as well as Phil did, kept it a great destination for photographers of all kinds, and gotten the offer from Amazon, and refuse the offer on principle, then you can insult him like you have. You don't have enough information to make the kinds of remarks about $$$$ and bias you make.

I still don't get it. I've since purchased one, but for months I collected every review I could find and anyone who says P.A. is the only person who mentions some reservations and/or criticisms about the Pentax didn't do much checking out. It's been generally a very well reviewed camera, but practically all of Phil's negative comments were echoed elsewhere, and in all cases couched in context.

His remarks about the in-camera processing I basically agree with, having spent a month experimenting with it. He gives it a very good review conclusion, giving it a "Highly Recommended" rating.

I have no stake in anything, but did anyone bother to actually read it? What about all the other reviews that also said it was a great camera with pretty much the same qualifications P.A. writes?

Does he have preferences? Sure. So do I. "Fanboy for the duopoly?" What a lazy argument. Hardly.

Remote E & F question for K10D

The Pentax site is less than helpfull on this (it doesn't even list the K10D as a compatible camera) and I've searched for info and come up short, so forgive me. I'm finding F users but no E users, so if any are out there...

Does the zoom button on the remote E work decently on the K10D? Is this feature the only difference between the two units? Remote zooming doesn't have much attraction to me (I'm assuming it's mostly only useful for remote use from the computer) but the F is still not in stock locally in NYC. Though as noted in another thread it's around $20, almost half of online vendors, and oddly there are some remote E's to be had.

Kind of interesting that these two are the same price if one is less featured. Why get the F?

In fact, at Adorama for $19 after tax (picked up, not shipped), it's barely more than the $8 generic eBay remote shipped from China. Waiting for stock, though : (

The only net vendor with them in stock at close to that price is OpticsPlanet Binoculars, telescopes, spotting scopes, rifles scopes, night vision, radar guns, microscopes, sunglasses & more Anyone dealt with them?

(edit: Wow, that's weird. I pasted only their url and the whole page title shows up. )

Thanks!

K10D Warranty Info ... I think I got suckered

That's going down a loaded path!!

Religion and conscience are mutually exclusive. The twain can meet, but it's not by definition.

Internet scamming is an easy racket. That's why the net is full of it. Your radar needs to be engaged at all times.

A wish for an alternate Continuous setting

Maybe there's no one else who feels this way, but sometimes I wish there were another slower continuous mode on the K10D to choose from. As it is now it's great for moving subjects, but for certain other times I'd love to be able to switch to, say, half the burst, around 3 shots per 2 seconds.

This is one of those times when if someone (like the Russian guys hacking the P & S Canon firmware for all the extra features) made a hack, I'd pop it right in.

Anyone else?

Best (Most Reliable) SD Card

I also tend not to put total stock anymore in the card's stats, except as a ballpark figure. I've had cards from two different manufacturers that claimed different speeds (a difference of 50X) and I'm convinced the one with the slower designation was marginally faster, probably having to do with the programming of the card. While I don't doubt they both earned their ratings properly in the lab, the real world sometime proves a little different.

Focusing in Dim or Low Contrast Lighting

I still think it due to a manufacturing inconsistency. Some people are swearing their's are no worse than anything else and others, like Ed who have problems that are not subtle and I would not assume are operator error any more than I would that they aren't. Just too many reports from people who know what they're doing.

Autofocus problem with K10D

Bummer. If anyone else had told you that I would have said take it to PhotoTech. :(

You'd think Pentax (*cough, cough*) would get whatever repair training materials for a camera that's been out for several months. I'm sure there are plenty of prospective NYC K10D buyers who would hold off when they find out it can't be repaired in the city that doesn't sleep. Including, um, maybe me.

K10D Build qualit VS ...

The cheapness of the feel wouldn't bother me so much if it fit your hand like a glove, but it doesn't, and after playing with one for a while and then picking up a D80 (just happened to be the next one) it was like getting off a torture rack and into a sauna. And I simply can't abide by the notion that a $140 grip is there to make the undoable doable instead of the good great.

The K10D felt very good as well. They definitely rule the smaller ones I've tried for feel.

Autofocus problem with K10D

I've read that this is the issue with what many feel is lackluster low light auto focusing. Makes sense powerwise, but if that's the case it kicks in pretty darn soon.

Hey Old Timer 56, since you have another body, did you try switching batteries between the two to see if the focus quirk followed the battery?

As an audio guy my tendency is to pull things out (everything that isn't nailed down) and put them back in and if there are any newly visible contacts to clean them. Modern cameras aren't as likely candiates as old ones, but sometimes hope springs eternal.
