Noise reduction was on auto in camera. Prodigital 2000 requested samples emailed to them with the return and agreed something was not right. The nikon crop is at 100% as well. There were many shots where the focus just seemed to hang, like if I had put something in front of it say 10 feet away, focused on it, then removed the subject and took the picture resulting in everything being out of focus. The only time it really worked well was when I was zoomed in at least 80 mm. Pretty certain it was a bad lens, but being it was a kit I had to return everything. It made me feel better though they mentioned out of say 1,000 kits sold, only around 10 were returned with this problem as I described.

Well, after messing around with this for the past week I've decided I'm sending it back. I've found even with precise manual focusing it just isn't cutting it and every other camera I've ever owned looked better than this and I think I got a dud lens. I'm hopeful Prodigital2000 wiil exchange it and the next one lives up to my expectations. Thanks for everyones input I do appreciate it.

Just curious why you had to send it back? Also, how long did this take? At this point I dont mind paying for the shipping to make this thing right.

A couple of folks recommended to shoot in live view to see what happens, then later on a few posts ago someone said if its accurate in LV then its the autofocus thats the culprit and not the lens. Could someone explain to me why this is? I understand they work differently yes, but why would the LV focus work and the autofocus not? I haven't tried it yet but will today b/c I figured if the focusing was screwed, it would be screwed up on both.

Although I've owned many cameras (a canon xsi, pentax k20d, kr, kx, and a d7000-which I didnt like) I've never had this problem or any problem for that matter so trying to solve this is way beyond me. After I sold my k20d I've regretted it ever since and every camera that came after that one didnt feel right to me like the k20d did, so I figured after the k5 dropped so much and I bought it I would feel like I did with the k20d.

Thanks to everyones input I really appreciate it, and no I'm not trolling... why someone would post bogus stuff is beyond me, I'm just looking for experienced help from advanced to pro Pentaxians that can point me in the right direction with all this and so far the help has been outstanding and I'm actually a bit suprised that so many people have offered their advice in attempting to help me solve this.

Why in the heck someone would do that is beyond me but I get what you are saying about the trolling thing. I'll walk around later today and take some random stuff then post them. To the person that asked about the af adjustment, I have messed with it and funny thing is if I adjust it to negative side I can tell a difference right away...say -5, if I go the plus side say +5-9, I cant see any difference even wide open and I've tried. Some shots end up like I posted, some look backfocused, its a bit all over the place. I'm going back to roberts to take the used lens back that wont focus right on the body as I stated before and figure I would be better off just ordering a new lens, something I'll need down the road anyway. As of taking the camera and lens back, they may tell me to send it in for warranty repair which I dont mind, but it was supposed to come with an international warranty card and the one it came with was for canadian buyers only (thats what it looks like to me) so I'm gonna have to call them too.

Well, just my luck I went to roberts camera here in indianapolis and bought an 18-55 lens listed in excellent condition, bring it home slap it on and when its set from 18 to about 23 mm the autofocus will not work, like it reached its stop limit on the lens. After all this I'm beyond frustrated. I swear, the original 18-135mm lens must be a dud the more I think about it and you would think something that costs almost 500 bucks would work as it friggin should. I want to love this camera and so far with the luck I'm having I'm far from it.

Also, I just found out if I return it to prodigital 2000 and they dont find something wrong with it, they send it back....great...that doesnt give me a good feeling at all. Sorry everyone, just venting

Both pics are crops, both cameras had the af on, and to the poster rawr that questioned if the OP was trolling us, I dont even know what that means. I went out and picked up a used 18-55 al lens and here in a bit I'm going to try it and see if its better. The lens is brand new that came with the camera as a kit. I have a feeling though this may be a bad lens that I'm going to have to send in though. Thanks for all the input thus far everyone, it sure does help ease my frustration over this. When I look on flickr of what the k5 and this lens should be capable of I'm blown away, so my hopes are still high. Its raining outside right now and when it stops I'll try the 18-55 lens and post some crops.

The first crop is the d7000, the second from the k5 both at 18mm. The k5 was shot at f6.3 and actually should be better.

I just purchased the k5 with the 18-135 wr lens and for some reason most of the pics I've shot just dont seem sharp to me. I'm not very experienced but I'm no dummy either and have enough knowledge to know something just isnt right. I had a Kr and a D7000 in the past and when I compaired all three the k5 was a far distant third and the pics out of the Kr and d7000 with the 18-55 and 18-105 standard lenses just look so much better and I've shot around 500 times on the k5 trying to figure out why and am getting very frustrated at this point. I've messed with the focus adjustment as well without results and now I'm starting to wonder if its the lens itself and am very disappointed. I've decided I'm going to go pick up a used lens today, slap it on and see what happens b/c so far this is just unacceptable. Even a simple pic of my car in the driveway doesnt look very good compared to the d7000 shots with the same exact settings...the d7000 pics stomp it and are far far better just in overall sharpness.

Is there anyone out there with the 18-135 wr lens that have had trouble like this? Just curious
