I have used the Sigma 17-70 primarily with my K-50, but I have mounted it on my K-01 a few times and found it is just as fast to focus (silently) and the compact form factor balances nicely with the K-01 body. I used to have the DA 16-45 and I think the Sigma 17-70 is more versatile with the f/2.8 aperture on the wide end and the extra zoom range, plus it's shorter (though heavier). I have compared the 17-70 with my DA 18-135, and I think the 17-70 is sharper and produces better bokeh than the pentax zoom. Let me know if you have any other questions or send me a PM if interested in buying. Thanks for your interest! (Also, I see that you're in NOVA - depending where you live, I can arrange to meet you at a coffee shop somewhere if you want to buy it in person).

and a stealth PM replied to. Per interested member's request, I am attaching a few shots of a subject in front of a light source, and thus backlit, to see how the lens performs in this condition. Pictures are taken at f/2.8, 4, 5.6, 7.1, and 9.

I am posting shots of an object in front of a blue background at different apertures so that you can see if the rear element scratches have an impact on the image quality. Pictures are taken at f/2.8, 4, 5.6, 7.1, 9, 11, 16, and 22.

Sigma has removed the OS from current production models of this lens for Pentax K-mount, so you probably won't have to deal with this issue unless you happen to buy a used copy that has OS built-in. Those are very early copies of this lens, though, so it is probably hard to find them for sale.

Not super stylish, but you could also consider Canon G7 X Mark II, which has 1" sensor and fast f/1.8-2.8 lens. $500 refurb price: https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/powershot-g7-x-mark-ii-refurbished

You could look at the Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II in silver color -- very compact, modern features, looks pretty stylish and sort of retro with the brown leather accents. $430 with a 1" sensor and f/2 lens (on wide end only)

I think manufacturers have given up the smaller sensor compacts and most start with the 1" sensor for their enthusiast model. But these are all far more than $300, sadly. I do have a retro-cool Olympus E-P5 (with micro-four thirds sensor) that I got refurbished from the Olympus Outlet Store, and it looks like a MX-1 but with a great touchscreen, fast autofocus, good video, etc. There is an Olympus E-M10 Mark II with retractable lens for $430 here: E-M10 Mark II Silver Body with 14-42mm Silver EZ Lens (Reconditioned) | Olympus But it is not very compact.

For your criteria of under $300, a new model, and compact like the MX-1 with a fast lens, I'm not sure such a thing exists. I would just go with the Q-S1 if you already have the lenses and are comfortable using it. Or maybe look into a first-generation Sony RX100 that has a 1" sensor and f/1.8 aperture (at wide end only), so it should be better in low light than the Q series, but it still exceeds your $300 budget, though not by that much (I see it on sale at B&H for $368 brand new, or less used). But the RX100 definitely does not have a retro style!

Item for Sale
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro HSM Contemporary

Asking Price
150.00 USD

Item Location
Alexandria, VA (United States)

Item Description
I bought this versatile, compact walkaround lens two years ago used (condition "very good") from Adorama in a fit of LBA passion. The f/2.8 aperture at the wide end is very handy for indoor shooting in lower light conditions, the telephoto reach to 70mm at f/4 produces lovely bokeh (and very nice close-focusing capability). I am also satisfied with the sharpness wide open and it is really sharp when stopped down just a little bit. Iíve decided to sell it because Iím trying to pare down my lens collection a bit, and raise some funds for future camera equipment purchases.

The lens is in good operational condition with quick, silent autofocus and comes with original caps and hood. The front glass looks clean, but the zoom ring has some wear marks. The rear element has a few visible scratches but they do not seem to affect image quality. (I have taken a close-up picture of the scratch). I've never had any issues in the pictures I took with the lens, but I'm also not a pixel-peeper. Because of this rear element scratch, however, I'm pricing this lens accordingly, and I think the buyer will get a lot of bang for the buck as a result. It's an excellent step-up from the kit lens!

Also, another disclosure is that there is some lens creep that is a very common occurrence with this lens. When the lens is parked at the 17mm zoom position, it does not creep even when pointed straight down. But move the zoom past 30mm and it will slowly extend out to the 70mm position. (Same thing happens when you hold it upward). This problem hasn't hindered my shooting style, and apparently it is a condition that often affects this lens and its predecessor versions.

Here are the pictures of the lens along with some photo samples. All shot wide-open.

When I first acquired the Sigma AF 24mm f/2.8 super-wide II, I used it all the time with my K-x, and then with my K-01. For some reason I don't use it as often with my K-50, perhaps because I have tended towards either the DA 21 or smc-F 28mm. But the 24 focal length, and this particular prime, will always have a place in my heart and camera kit. I can't bring myself to sell it. For sentimental reasons especially, because it has captured some of my favorite pictures of my dog when he was just a puppy.

Hopefully it has a sharp lens and can fit in the pants' pocket easily. I've been intrigued by the GR II but this camera's touchscreen, 24 megapixels, newer technology, and lower MSRP all look very interesting!

Thanks for the tip about buying the squaretrade warranty at the same time as the camera from Amazon! It is a significant cost savings over buying the insurance on the squaretrade website. I've used Squaretrade a few times in the past to cover accidental damage to my iPhones and they've been hassle-free experiences in getting reimbursements for the cost of repairs.

This is only based on what I've read about these cameras, as I've not handled any of them. I think it would not be a big enough of an upgrade from KS-2 to KP to justify the switch. For me, I'm coming from a K-50 and K-01, so the KP would be a huge upgrade.

You may also want to ask your question in the DSLR forum rather than this price watch thread. Or, take a look at this previous posting:
