Defects in Pentax-M 100mm f/4, fix or leave alone?

I'll keep my haze thank you very much. There are some dust particles I wouldn't mind getting inside however.

This one doesn't appear to unscrew from the front. I have a 50mm A lens that I took apart for practice that does but using that technique doesn't remove that outer ring. Once I'm done using it (probably in a few months to a year) I'll play with it and see what happens.

They offered me 50% back, which makes the lens dirt cheap so I took that. I sent an email to precision camera to see if they can clean it but no word back yet. Even if it can't be fixed, it takes really nice shots outside of direct light which is about 90% of my work anyway. Anything in bright light would be a landscape and I'd use a different lens so I think this works for me.

Example of non bright light shot:

I'm totally okay with that.

Still want to know how to take off the front element if anyone has any ideas. If I have to take the whole thing apart then never mind though, I always lose pieces.

I think I'll use this knowledge to see if I can get a partial refund from the seller so I can keep it and not hunt around for another one for weeks. It was really cheap compared to what all of the other auctions went for in the last few weeks that I've been trying to win the lens so I think it's worth keeping. Also I don't shoot in bright sunlight a lot but I am going to experiment today with it to see how bad it really is and if I'm okay with the lower contrast.

Thanks for your reply.

If they were only a little more expensive I wouldn't care but all the ones I've seen that are buy now or actually mint condition go for over double what I paid and I am on one of those things some people use to manage their money, a budget. Also if it were growing a mold I'd have opened it from the back and swabbed a culture for my microbio class already. :D

By kitted you mean the cemented elements?

If that's all that's going to happen that's great! Contrast can be boosted in post but I was concerned about artifacts in the photo that I'm too lazy to photoshop out.

I would attempt to clean up the haze if I knew how to take apart this particular lens, I've taken apart 50mm's but the front element can be removed through the front and this lens doesn't seem to have a masking ring (whatever you call that where the info is inscribed) on it.

Thank you for your speedy replies.

I got an M 100mm for a good price on Ebay with the seller saying it was "mint" and the pictures showing no major issues except when I received it today and examined it, it has some big defects inside the lens. See below: (Not the best picture of defect but best I could get)

It's like a smudge on the interior like someone cleaned it with grease on the inside.

However when taking photos I get various results that don't look like anything is really wrong with them:

The defect appears to be on the interior of the front element, I feel comfortable taking it apart (I practiced on a spare 50mm a few weeks ago for fun) but I don't know how to disassemble this particular lens or even if it is worth it since the pictures look okay.

Any advice would be nice, although I don't want to sell/return it because I got it for such a good price compared to the most recent auctions on the same lens (and those had advertised fungus/haze).

Thank you.

People are funny sometimes when it comes to their cameras. I sold a 60D to a guy once and he returned it saying it was defective because it flashed red all over the picture. I tried to explain to him thats a GOOD thing; letting you know you overexposed but he kept saying, "my friends Nikon doesn't do that." His friend probably knows how to adjust his settings better than him.

And another time a kid came in said he had tried a 50mm, a 35mm and a zoom 18-135mm lens and couldn't get a good portrait shot out of any of them. I don't think there was much hope for him. -_-

A camera is only there to help you capture what you see originally with your own eyes, it's not a super hero. Even dinky little throw away cameras with enough light and a good angle can take a worthy shot.

Put a $50 camera in my hand and I'll probably be more interested in taking fun, edgy shots. Put a $5000 camera in my hand and I'd be too scared to break it to do anything extreme (toss it, throw water at it, stick it in the mud).

Manual Lenses

I think manual lenses are faster than AF lenses. I had the kit lens but sold it with my kx and then bought the kr body only. My only AF lens is an ordinary 18-200mm for practice. It's loud and slow AF but it works well for indoors for my dogs and astrophotography. My three 50mm (I think I have an obsession) lenses are where I really start to get creative. One is a lensbaby and that is a whole separate class on its own but it's still manual and so much more fun. I think you can compose your shot better with a MF too since you have to actually LOOK at your subject instead of just waiting for the camera to beep.

Price isn't a huge concern to me as if I want a nice lens I'll just save up for it but I just feel that even my old smc-a took better pictures than the kit lens. My smc-m and lensbaby are the best lenses I own. Sharp contrast, amazing colors, quick to shift and change. I'm about to venture into M42 lenses to see the quality of those are. "They don't make them like they used to" is a true statement I feel when it comes to lenses. My smc-m is all metal and the kr is plastic compared to how it feels. Not that it's a poorly made camera it just isn't as solid as my k1000 even.

Now all I need is the K-5 for a brighter viewfinder.

Fun to see considering that the competition (Socankiolymosonic) put out 4 cameras for every 1 Pentax.

I just "upgraded" to the M50 1.7 from the A50 2. What a difference!
I want to say these are in the range of 5.6-2. I was using a flash so I didn't want it super open.

Yeah that's what confused me, the low level output. I wanted NO on body flash whatsoever but I guess I can always block the body flash when need be.

Metz AF50 surprise

I got the Metz 50 too! It's a great thing, but it's bigger than my k-r which is kinda funny. I figured out almost all the settings in a few minutes but I think that's because I was reading up on it for hours before I got the thing. The only thing that threw me at first was the wireless servo mode; if I can get it to fire without the body flashing having to go off that'd be perfect.

For some reason, you can swivel it all the way around and flash your face if you so choose, seems odd to me but whatever.

Pentax K-r owners - opinions/thoughts

I never understood the front focusing problem. This may be because I use manual lenses indoors and my auto zoom telephoto outdoors only in sunlight. I had the K-X and immediately upgraded to the K-R; no regrets. I love the 6fps (for pets), the expanded iso range, (for nighttime photography) the easy and quick live view (so sue me, I use live view sometimes) and the general ease of use of the camera.

I have four lenses for my camera not including stock lens while my Canon user buddies have 1; the stock lens. They say it's because the other lenses are too expensive. For what I paid for all four of my lenses they can get one decent lens.

I had a 50mm 'A' lens and now I just bought the 'M' 50mm 1.7. I never even noticed that I could auto aperture on the A lens since I never did. I personally just take a photo, look at it to see if any red is flashing (to see if I over/underexposed) and then readjust. I never touch that green button for some reason.

Usually adjusting the settings on the lens is super fast and makes it easier to just go about your business. They're also super fun to show off to Canikon users who can't even fathom old lenses.

How many users set the focus point and use AF.S/AF.C?

Wow! It's good to see so many people use AF.S. I talk with a lot of Canikon users and they have no idea what I'm referring to.

I try to use the adjustable focus points sometimes but I find they interfere with other settings in the camera so I do the CF and recompose as well.

I had a training with BluePixel the other day and we went over how to adjust your auto-focus for single shot/continuous and how to set the focus point or leave it on auto. We practiced on Nikon/Canon but Pentax has the option too. I was just wondering, how many people here take advantage of the auto-focus modes or do you just leave it on AF.A? Do any of you select your focus points, or use the center-weighted and lock option?

I don't think it's a huge deal either way you do it, just curious. I plan on taking advantage of the focus modes (when I'm not using my manual lens) now that I know about them.

I would be afraid of this just in case the battery went bad or overheated during charging and exploded...inside of your camera. I'd rather have to replace a charger and battery then a whole new camera. That's just how I see it.

I like AA batteries but this lithium battery seems to last forever for my purposes, I have yet to be tempted to grab the adapter.

Pentax K-x in-camera processing

I actually love the in camera processing. There are millions of images that are perfectly properly exposed and colored, why do yours have to be? Isn't the point of a hobby to have fun? I usually take a photo regular just in case I don't like the filter later, but the filters are cool and they make your images even more unique. For example:

Jupiter Inlet BB by wrysosrs, on Flickr or

Jupiter Inlet without Filter by wrysosrs, on Flickr

The one on top has a filter, I like it better. To each their own but that's just my 2 cents.

I actually have (had while the camera is out to service) this combo right now. The lens works great but it's loud as heck!
Thankfully I mainly use it outside where the wind whisks away a lot of the noise, but indoors it scares the crud out of my cats.

No problems with focusing on it, but I usually use manual focus.

I don't think mine came with a warranty card. I got some paperwork and online Pentax asks for a sales receipt.

I guess I'll call tomorrow when they're open and see. Although looking back at the kx and kr, they seem to announce new cameras around September-October and my next trip isn't until October...

It looks like Amazon warehouse deals aren't exactly deals anymore. I've never had a problem buying refurbished before this. :(

I guess because it was from Amazon warehouse deals, I can't do an exchange, only a refund. I got a really good price on it too, Amazon up'd the price by $50 since I bought it.

If the issue I'm having isn't really common, I guess I'll just call Pentax then. I was looking so forward to taking my new camera down to Miami on Monday too. :(
