I found that 2.8~4.0 worked best with the flash @ 1/180

2.0 @1/750.

Thanks everyone.

Man I have so much to learn!

Why when I'm using a flash is my max shutter speed 1/180?

at F2 all by pics come out white!

Does anyone know if there is a camera setting to increase shutter speed with a flash?

Anyone try them?

4 for under $20 and another $20 for the charger.

They are direct from China so I'm hesitant to put then in and have them melt down...

I was focusing on the mouth of the coral.
Perhaps I should have shot it at F8 or F10?

Shooting under blue high intensity lights it takes me about 50 clicks for every decent pic

Ok I have been shooting for a few months now.

I have a KX and shoot with a sigma 70-300 and the stock 18-55

I really want to get some more lenses but cannot right now.

The pic of the boy is my son and is the only picture I actually had printed.
The other is a coral from my aquarium

Next Lens? Nifty fifty?

So I got my camera a few weeks ago (k-m) I absolutly Love it!
I have spend the last few weeks shooting in all manual mode while going back and forth with MF/AF. I did this to better learn exposure/aperture and ISO settings. Over the past few weeks I have seen much improvement in my pics.
Currently I have the stock DAL 18-55 which does not seem to take very good pics at all. I also have a Quantaray (Tamaron clone) 70-300/5.7. I love this lens but in close situations I'm restricted by the 70mm focal length.

I was thinking about a 50mm prime. Actually a 50/1.7, nifty fifty as I have read on the net. All reviews say this is a "must have lens".

So my question is what is the advantage of a 50mm prime verses a good 18-55 other than aperture?

And why do they not seem to make a zoom with aperture below 4?

If I go with a 50/1.7? which brand/model?

Thanks!

Item Description
I have this SMC-M 200mm F/4 Prime.
I got it a few weeks ago in a K-m Package I purchased here on Pentaxforums.com.

I really do not see myself getting much use out of this lens.

It is in great condition with hardly any usage showing.

Both caps included and hood is attached.

Not really sure what it's worth but searching the forum looks like $80 shipped is fair.

I know this is a long shot but is anyone has a 100ish mm macro I'm open to trades.

Buying new camera: Pentax K-X or Canon T1i (help requested)

I too was asking the same question over the last few weeks.
I went with a K-m because I got a awesome deal on it.

I did a lot of shopping and actually found the K-x (black) with the 18-55 and 50-200mm for under $575 shipped.

I love mine an I'm sure you will to.

The older lenses work great and yes you do get the AF "beep" I'm planning on swamping out the stock focus screen for a split screen.

That would explain why I did have a razor thin DOF at 300mm /F5.6 ;)

At F5.6 I was not even able to get one flow in focus. Heck at F32 the far left one still of not 100%

Thank you!
The only reason I used such a high aperture was because I was having trounle getting all the petals of all three flowers in focus.

It's only about 3/8" depth between the three.
This seems to be the hardest part for me to understand.

Is there any reading that would explain the relationship between DOF/Aperture/and Focal Length?

Well I have had my camera for 3 days now. I did not shoot any yesterday but did a lot on the first day and learned a ton!

Here is a link to my 1st day's pics.
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-beginners-corner-q/97770-new-dslr-...-critique.html

In a nut shell I have really been reading about ISO, Aperture and exposure and how they all work together.

Here is a pic from today I took
I learned that (for this pic) low ISO high aperture and long exposure make for a much better pic.

I took the shot first in full auto and it tried to take the pic at F8 and 1/10 ISO 800

I too it at ISO 200/F32 with a full 3 second exposure.
Focal length 300mm

Of course with a tripod and 2 second timer.
Manual focus.

For reference the entire flower is about the size of a kernel of corn.
It's a house plant from the living room.

After looking at the camera I thought I was shooting at 400 but hte camera was set to 1600

I think when I went from auto to manual it defaulted to 1600 and I did not catch it.
