Let's share shots with Q!

I recently relied entirely on a Q7+02 Zoom to document a scientific tree-measurement expedition in NY's Adirondack Mountains to explore a previously unknown old-growth forest site. I managed to get some nice shots in, even as documentation was the main intention.

IMGP9329 by rootshaveapulse, on Flickr
Likely to be one of the largest white pines in the Northeast, pending full measurement with a reticle to calculate trunk volume. Largest in diameter of any forest-grown northeastern white pine at 5.1 feet in diameter at 4.5' above ground level.

Stitched image of my favorite tree from the trip, also an extremely high trunk volume for this species in the northeast, 4.6' in diameter at standard measuring height, as well as quite tall at 143.5' tall.

I think I can fit it in a medium flat-rate box, so it would be about $13.

If it actually happens, I hope it's not APS-C, or even micro 4/3. Picking up a used GX100, very cheaply, is actually what convinced me I'd rather work with a Q7 than a K-3 ii. Sure, the modern APS-C sensors are amazing, but I don't need them, and neither do a lot of users. Something you can put in your pocket and always have with you is more useful in the end, which is why smartphones get used for a lot of picture-taking, but that's not to say they're a meaningful replacement, and here's why. The lens on the GX100 is fantastic edge-to-edge wide open, and together with uncooked RAW even from that small, old CCD sensor the results from careful use at base ISO are nothing short of excellent, including macro, and the interface is an ideal balance of simplicity and function. I am never going to get that out of a smartphone.

I have one of the better smartphones for photography, I can shoot RAW with it, I like to use the sweep panorama function, it possibly has less noise in low light than the GX100, but it still doesn't match the 10-year-old compact camera for actually making photographs.

If you put even the sensor from the Q7 in the old GX100 body/lens and updated the electronics to keep up on speed, that would be a worthwhile camera. I still use the GX200 alongside the Qs, since for whatever reason there is no Q lens that does decent macro. The GX series lens does great macro. I'd rather use the GX100 for it but the camera doesn't quite respond fast enough to keep up with living insects and whatnot, it makes much nicer base ISO RAWs than the 12mp GX200 sensor. Put a modern sensor in it and the point is moot.

All this arguing over how much of the market smartphones have eaten is kind of pointless. Ricoh/Pentax make niche cameras, big and small, that sell sufficiently to a specific customer base. Other manufacturers are selling their quality-focused smallish-sensor compacts successfully. Why not Ricoh?

I've been really appreciating the Q system's light weight and compactness while exploring deep gorges in western NY state (both Zoar Valley and Chautauqua Creek Gorge seen here) looking for superlative trees to measure. I definitely need to get the 08 lens soon... the 02 zoom is a useful range and optically solid but the long zoom is what's really impressing me, being f2.8 all the way and still so small! The 01 prime is definitely nice as well.

kwb, sorry if this has been discussed before, but your stitches with the 02 lens are always gorgeous. Which focal length do you usually use and what software do you usually use to stitch? I notice these cameras have an in-camera panorama function but I'm not sure if that just guides the shots or does any stitching- do you use that at all? I'm used to just using the grid lines on screen but haven't done any stitching with the Q yet, and you've clearly got it mastered.

PentaxForums.com Marketplace Listing

Item for Sale
Pentax K-3 ii, D FA 100mm macro WR, F 35-70 3.5-4.5, M 50 f1.7

Asking Price
730.00 USD total

Item Location
Fredonia, NY (United States)

Item Description
I love my DSLR gear but as I mainly use it for fieldwork documentation, it hangs around my neck (along with other non-camera gear) for hours over long distances and long story short, I've switched to the quirky little Q. Prices for individual items listed below. Added 100mm macro 10/24

Pentax K-3 ii - $650
Purchased new from Adorama several months ago, still in very close to new condition. I have found the built-in GPS invaluable and wish it were a feature on every camera. Shutter count 9946 (I shoot a lot of bursts). Comes with original box and papers, strap, batter, charger, etc. Might be still under warranty, I'll have to get the box out and check.

D-FA 100mm f2.8 Macro WR - $350 SOLD
This lens needs no introduction. Purchased used from Adorama in excellent condition, still in excellent condition. One of my favorite lenses, but the focal length is a bit too long for me adapted on the Q. Would also be open to trading for the Q 08 Wide Zoom. Comes with hood, caps, original box, and manual.

D-BG5 Grip - $60 SOLD
Purchased with K-3 ii, a couple light scuffs in the plastic from normal usage but otherwise in excellent condition. Comes in original box with both inserts. Purchase together with the K-3 ii at $50 for $750 total.

M 50mm f1.7 - $35
I've had this one a good long time and it's one of my favorites. Sharp even wide open, distinctive bokeh character, my preferred lens for "brenizer-style" shallow-dof stitching. Textured outer focus ring slightly loose (will turn separately from lens if held loosely), doesn't impact usage.

F 35-70 f3.5-4.5 - $45
Purchased from a forum member about a year ago. Excellent compact lens (barely bigger than the M 50), quick autofocus, useful macro function at 70mm. Beautiful glass and excellent imaging characteristics. When turning manual focus ring there's a slight "catch" at about the 12' mark on the focus scale, has not been a problem in usage and does not affect autofocus.

Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 - $200 SOLD
My "daily driver" in the field, overshadowed by the f3.5 constant and the 8-16mm but a perfectly respectable ultrawide and the lightest and most compact of the bunch. Purchased here on the forums several months ago. Altogether in very good condition with one small (about 1mm long) imperfection in the front element (pictured) that has not shown up in images. Comes with original zippered soft case, hood, and cap (if I can find it).

Any adaptable lenses make the Q truly pocketable?

I see, that all makes sense. Looks like pocket-bulges are the way it'll have to be.

4/3 with a pancake sounds nice, but that 08 zoom is really the entire point for me, and the Oly 9-18 just doesn't have the same appeal.

Any adaptable lenses make the Q truly pocketable?

I'm looking at getting the Q7 and 08 lens, which would cover certain shooting situations I'm often in very adequately. The one thing I don't understand, though, is why Pentax would make a tiny system camera like this without also releasing a respectable pancake lens?

It's a tiny camera. Being able to slip it into a pants pocket and forget about it (like I do with my old Ricoh GX100) would be one of its best attributes, and easily realized with a simple pancake prime, but it seems the most compact native lens with decent image quality is the 01 prime, which protrudes a bit much for pants pockets. The body cap lens looks fun, but I wouldn't want to rely on it.

So based on all that, are there any adaptable lenses (whether CCTV or whatever else) of decent optical quality that are thinner, adapter and all, than the 01 prime is when mounted on a Q? I've attempted searching and done quite a bit of browsing and haven't found anything specifically discussing compactness of adapted third-party lenses.

Thanks!

Macro choice - Sigma 105 vs Tamron 90

I worked with the Tamron in a different lensmount (Sony Alpha) and can definitely recommend it as an excellent lens, and I was all set to buy one in Pentax mount when I decided to switch back- but then I made the mistake of handling a display copy of the D-FA 100mm WR. When one came up at a decent price used, that was all there was for me. Switching between AF/MF is vastly easier and more intuitive with the D-FA than any other lens I've worked with, and that turns out to make a big difference in getting the shot vs. not getting the shot when working with quick-moving bugs and arachnids. A lot of folks seem to think MF-only is the way to go with macro, and I could not disagree more. If you can afford it (think about how the cost spreads out over years and years of use), go for the D-FA.

I do prefer its rendering as well.

I am selling my beloved and well-used K-5. I purchased this camera back in 2014 from another user on the boards, and it has had some serious adventures since then. Its functionality was greatly enhanced when I bought an O-GPS1, which I have since sold. Unfortunately I realized I need to use gps and flash at the same time, something not convenient with the O-GPS1; a misadventure with a Sony SLT with built-in gps convinced me to spring for the K-3 ii, which means that my K-5 is no longer getting used. I'd rather have it out in the world taking pictures for someone. Note that the GPS mounted on the camera in the photos has sold separately and is no longer available.

This K-5 has become pretty well-worn, as will be displayed in the photos (shot with naked flash to show off all that dust in my house!), but functioning very well. It has a lot of brassing on the bottom plate, and some slight separation of the grip rubber near the front control wheel. If it weren't for my gps needs I'd probably put another few years on this body, like I did with my old K-x.

The 18-55 ii kit lens was purchased used from Adorama within the last year and looks practically as-new to me. I've owned several copies of this lens and this copy has solid image quality.

I would like to sell the lens and camera as a kit if possible, and will take $220 for the two together. Separately I'd ask $180 for the K-5 and $60 for the 18-55 ii, given their relative condition. Really good opportunity for someone to step up to a semipro body on a budget!

Included are charger, battery, cord and body cap for K-5, pinch cap and endcap for the 18-55, and hood with polarizer window.

I also have two very nice lenses for Sony Alpha mount I'd like to offer here before putting them up elsewhere. I was using them on an A55 until it suffered a fatal shutter lockup issue, prompting me to stick with Pentax. First off is the Sony 30mm f2.8 macro, pretty much LNIB from KEH within the last couple months. Great rendering and very convenient small size and low price on any aps-c Sony Alpha DSLR or SLT. Asking $110.

Second is a Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro, which came very clean from a reseller in japan through ebay. This thing is great! I liked it so much I nearly bought a K-mount copy to put on my new K-3 ii, and only changed my mind when a D-FA 100mm popped up in Adorama's used section at a very attractive price. Comes in orginal box with hood, soft case, papers etc. Asking $190.

Please see attached images and inquire for any additional information.

Paypal or cash if local buyer (I'm located in NYC and willing to meet up), shipping paid by buyer through their preferred service. Returns within 15 days if items are not as described.

Got down into the New Jersey pine barrens last weekend, and visited some swamps dominated by Atlantic White-Cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides). It is really an exceptionally aesthetically appealing species in its wild growth forms! These were developed in-camera since my laptop is in for repairs, so they don't look quite as I'd like, but nice nonetheless. Both with K-3 ii, first one with 18-55 kit lens and second with D-FA 100mm macro.

I was very close to purchasing a used Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro at a nice price, since I had really enjoyed using the same lens on a Sony DSLR for a bit, when I made the mistake of handling a display copy of the D-FA 100mm macro at B&H. After a couple seconds playing with it on my K-5 I knew that while the Tamron is nice, no other lens would ever really do... a used copy popped up on the Adorama website for $400 the very next day and I snatched it up.

Tomorrow I'll be really putting this lens through its paces on a botany- and invertebrate-focused trip to the NJ Pine Barrens, but I enjoyed grabbing a few little snaps around the botanical garden where I work yesterday. I was glad to have one of my favorite little pollinators (the Margined Calligrapher hoverfly) alight on one of my favorite wildflowers, "Blue Eyed Grass," actually a member of the Iris family though it does resemble a grass with tiny blue flowers. Just have to remember to stop down a touch further! Looking forward to pairing this with the AF-200 flash that came in my new K-3 ii kit... RAW developed in-camera while I wait on repairing my computer.
