Tried out the K7 and Kx at Frys

I had a K10D (which I really liked) but wanted live view. I decided the K7 was more camera than I needed (I don't think I touched half the capabilities of the K10D), and ordered a K-x, which is suppose to be delivered today. Posts like this just make the wait all the longer... :)

Wow, I paid $199 for mine as well. Saw them at $250 a while back, and didn't thing that much of it. I guess it is a keeper. I should have bought a caseload. :)

K10D vs. K-x AF

Thanks for the feedback... Still not sure if I should put the trigger on the K-x, try to talk my way up to a K-7 with the wife (not too much groveling should do it), or just wait it out for the next models.

K10D vs. K-x AF

I have a K10D with less than 6000 snaps on it, and I'm thinking about a K-x due to its lighter weight and live view. I'm a real basic shooter, so a lot of the capabilities of the K10D are lost on me. Normally I'm either playing with basic focus, DOF/aperture, shutter speed or exposure; not much more. I don't need weather sealing (none of my lenses have it, so what is the point). The one big thing I'm curious about on the K-x are its AF capabilities. Is the AF faster and more accurate than the K10D. I get really frustrated in low-light situations where my K10D AF just hunts and hunts.

Any other thoughts about a K10D vs. K-x greatly appreciated. Before you suggest a K7, it is a bit out of my price range, and I"m liking the things I'm reading about the K-x sensor and low light.

Thanks!

Here are a few shots from the Vivitar 500mm f6.3 Mirror Lens that I just got. ISO 200. Resized with a slight light tweak in PS. I really like the lens, but it is a PITA to get proper focus.

Great thread. Stumbled across while looking for some teleconverter advice. As I expected, the teleconverter isn't a good option with my long lens. Started reading this thread, and some other info out there, and ordered a Vivitar 500mm F6.3 Mirror Lens 1:6.3 DX. I hope the extra money for the faster lens is worth it (not that it cost that much in the first place).

Teleconverter Help

I read up and looked around, and settled on a Vivitar 500mm F6.3 Mirror Lens 1:6.3 DX. $175 shipped with a T-mount. I considered a long used prime, but I didn't want to carry around the bulk. I also thought about trying to find a Tamron, but I think this will do for the time being. I know focusing is a challenge, but I hope to get the hang of it with some practice. Thanks all.

Thanks for confirming what I thought might be the case. Unfortunately I'm not in the position to spend big bucks for a long, fast lens. I guess I'll go with plan B and get an inexpensive 500mm mirror lens to play with.

If been out trying to shoot birds, and I'm frustrated with the limited reach on my current long lens. So I'm considering a teleconverter to use with my Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro. Can anyone comment on if a Pentax SMC 2x-S Rear Converter-A would work with my Sigma, or would a Kenko 2X MC7 DG be a better choice. Or am I just wasting money?

Here is a listing for a Vivitar 28mm 2.8 on eBay to give you a rough idea on the value of your Vivitar lens.

Help - Tokina SL 28mm 2.8 Pentax KA-mount

The seller is a real stand-up guy and immediately refunded all my money plus extra for the return of the lens without me first returning the lens. Said he wasn't aware that Tokina had a Ricoh mount and admitted he hadn't tried it on his camera. A little inconvenience and a couple of lessons learned. More proof that not all of the sellers on eBay are lowlifes.

Now I'm back to square one. Since people want so much for the used Pentax SMC-A 28mm, I started looking at the Sigma 20, 24, and 28mm 1.8s. Big and heavy, but fast. I hadn't given it much thought, so I'm going to have to go home and play with my zoom to see if the 20mm is worth the money over the 24mm, and 28mm.

Also got a Sears 50mm 2.0 in the mail today that I bought off eBay for $8 just to see what a fully manual lens is like to work with. Its in great shape, and the flange is the right size. :)

Thanks all.

Considering what I paid for it (it was a lot more than $5-10), I'm going to ask the seller for a refund. No way I'm going to hack it up. Too bad, because I think I would have liked it too. I'm off to find a Pentax-A 28 mm 2.8...

When I saw the pin and the "R-P/K" I thought it might be a Ricoh, but I wasn't 100% sure. The auction only showed a picture of the front of the lens. Thanks.

Help - Tokina SL 28mm 2.8 Pentax KA-mount

I bought this lens advertised as a "Tokina SL 28mm 2.8 Pentax KA-mount mint condition" off eBay because I wanted to try an inexpensive maunual focus wide angle prime. Problem is, it won't mount on my K10D. Below is a picture of my FA50 F1.4 next to the Tokina, and you can see that flange (what ever it is called) is much wider on the Tokina, which prevents it from sitting flush in the K10D lens mount. Besides the fact that it won't mount on my K10D, it appears to be in great condition.

So where did I go wrong, and do I have a valid argument with the seller that this is not a legitimate Pentax KA mount?

Thanks

I really didn't use it that much, but my initial impression is that while it made the image in the viewfinder brighter and bigger, it also made the edges of the viewfinder harder to discern.

My concern was more with making the camera more glasses "friendly," which it did.

You can find some better opinions from more seasoned photographers if you do an internet search.

I thought I'd see if anyone would be interested in this Pentax O-ME53 Magnifying Eyecup before I put it on eBay. I bought it from Adorama for my K-10D, mostly because it helps if you wear glasses. However, I have since been fitted for contacts, and don't really need it. It was only used a few times and comes with the original box and instructions. I looks like new. I paid $35 + $5 shipping, and would like to sell it for $25 including USPS shipping to the Continental United States. Prefer Paypal, but I can work with a bank check / money order too. Please PM me if you are interested. Thanks.
