Cactus V6 Mk II Announced

Hi Paulster,
You know, the V6ii ID was set to "0000". Pretty sure I checked it before and after, but I did change it to "0001". I'll try changing it back to 0000 plus do the factory reset, and see what happens. Yea I've been keeping the channels consistent, tried a few different ones but for most attempts the RF60 and V6ii have been on channel 1.

Paulster you-are-a GENIUS! Changed Radio ID back to 0000, did Factory Reset, and we have a winner! V6ii and RF60 flashes communicate perfectly now. Thank you!

Any other suggestions? It seems like it"s got to be something simple that I've overlooked... I was pretty excited about the new HSS capability of the V6ii. Maybe I should return it for an exchange, and see how the replacement works? I just think all the trouble-shooting possibilities should be explored first, but I'm fresh out of ideas...

By the way I forgot to mention that the firmware version for the RF60 is confirmed as 204.

I've now tried changing the FW on the RF60 back to Ver. 200, but the V6ii still does not communicate. Then upgraded the RF60 FW to Ver. 204 (latest, which is what I had installed yesterday) again. Still no communication with V6ii, but the V6 again works perfectly. I've downloaded the user manuals for both RF60 and V6ii, yet neither seems to indicate other than, turn both units on and they should work, no fancy hocus-pocus needed. Again, RF60 on Slave, both V6ii and RF60 on Channel 1, Group A, Working Range short (tried from about 6 - 10 feet now, AND I've tried long range too just in case). I've also tried switching channels and groups to no avail. I have tried both with the V6ii on-camera and off, but it seems for this kind of testing, off-camera should be sufficient, right? (The V6 works fine that way for testing.) The V6ii camera profile is set to Pentax. Another question, could the flash profile set-up make a difference? I have tried both "Auto", as well as "Manual". I didn't think that it should be set to "Pentax AF540", for example, when using the Cactus flash. I'm stumped, any ideas?

One other thing, if I go to Power Mode on V6ii, then try to set to Absolute (set-up), then Sync Flash, it says "no flash found". If I do the same thing with the V6, it immediately finds the RF60. Also, when I first turn on V6ii, "Det.Flash" shows the the little square symbol with lightning bolt at top left corner, the inside of the box which would indicate "P", "N", etc. is blank.

EDIT: Sorry ClassA, I was typing last post apparently during your reply. Yes I've checked RF60s and they all show FW ver 204. Auto HSS is on. Group and channel settings are the same. The V6 has already been upgraded to 2.1.001.

---------- Post added 01-29-17 at 11:22 AM ----------

Both transceivers have been updated to the latest FW, the V6 is ver. 2.1.001, the V6ii is ver. 1.1.006. I have a Pentax AF540 but never intended to use it with the Cactus system, which is why I have four of the RF60 flashes. So I did fiddle with the AF540 for a bit but it seemed more trouble than it was worth for this initial trouble-shooting phase. HOWEVER, I did throw an RF60 on the V6 in RX mode, then tried using the V6ii in TX to fire it. Nothing. Strangely enough, when I switched roles (RF60 on V6ii as receiver, V6 as transmitter), everything on the RF60 worked perfectly- power settings, zoom, etc. With the way these are acting I thought maybe I'd mixed the two units up and mistook the V6 for V6ii, but the model numbers are both clearly marked appropriately on the underside. (And of course the different functionality of the V6ii is readily apparent.) Weird, huh?

Class A or Cactus, I'm looking for advice on the V6ii and RF60 flashes. I've been using the V6 with four RF60's, and they work great. Just bought a V6ii and can't get it to fire them. The V6ii is FW 1.1.006, and all of the RF60's have been upgraded to FW 204. They continue to work with the V6. For my testing I have the V6ii set to Short Range, TX to flash distance about 3-4 feet, flashes on Slave, group A, channel 1, V6ii set the same. I've also tried Reset on the V6ii. How can I get these to work with the new V6ii transceiver? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

What's so special about the 77 limited?

The question was posed, "Why not the FA50 [for portraits] in APSC format?" These respected contributors have hit the nail on the head. I had the Trio, and this may be blasphemy, but I let the 31 go in favor of the DA 35 Ltd. However, I will never part with the 77! I was shooting portraits for a friend, using both the DA*55, and the 77. While the 55 is no slouch, the 77 blew it away consistently. The 55 just couldn't be counted on to deliver the goods at wide apertures the way the 77 can, and nowadays for portraits I won't even bother with any other lens. And, the 77 is also much more than just for portraits! Other lenses may come and go, but the 77 is a keeper.

I'm disappointed by the number of just-average snapshots that have been submitted- the "Best of 2014", really? But THIS is an outstanding effort Matt, and absolutely deserves nomination! Had to laugh about your scramble to get there, ("been there, done that"), glad you didn't get a ticket. Beautiful image!

Item for Sale
Pentax K20D body; Pentax D-BG4 battery grip

Asking Price
275.00 USD

Item Location
Michigan (United States)

Item Description
I have for sale both a K20D body, and a D-BG4 grip (for K5, K5II, K5IIs).

K20D: This camera has served me well over the years, and is used but not abused. I am the original owner. It is in very good condition with a normal amount of wear. Shutter count is 19,930. It has a Nikon K3 grid screen (with split-image range finder spot) installed. The original screen is included. This type of screen proved essential when trying to focus fast manual lenses, such as the Cosina 55mm f1.2. The top LCD is spotless, the back LCD has the faintest of marks on the lower right corner that you'd have to look pretty hard to see. There are a few dust specks that found their way inside the viewfinder over the years, but they are in no way able to interfere with, or be visibly captured by the sensor. This camera comes in the original box, with all paperwork, CD, and user manual included. All of the cables that originally came with it are also included, as well as the charger and an extra Pentax-brand battery. Also included are the viewfinder and hotshoe covers, and a brand-new, unused strap.
Price: $175, which includes Paypal fees and shipping to the continental United States. SOLD

D-BG4 grip: This battery grip is unused, new in the box. It came as part of a package and since I already had one, I don't really need this one. It includes both the standard lithium battery tray (already mounted inside the grip), and the accessory AA-type battery tray.
Price: $100, including Paypal fees and shipping to the continental U.S.

Pentax FA 31 Ltd

Asking Price
900.00 USD

Item Location
Gibraltar, Michigan (United States)

Item Description
Pentax FA 31 Ltd, mint condition. I am the original owner and have had it less than a year. I know this is a desirable lens but honestly I like my DA 35 Macro Ltd a whole lot better. (There, I said it! Blasphemy! :p) I've probably only shot about 20 or 30 frames with it. It has had a B+W UV/Haze filter on it since I bought it, (filter is not included), the glass is clear, pristine, no dust, no marks or wear of any kind on this lens. Comes with original box, leather pouch, lens caps, plus an aftermarket plastic pinch-type cap. Shipping is included. Thanks for looking!

Cactus RF60 Flash Review

My mistake! It was the Metz 58 that I had been using, not the 52. The "smart" A mode that it had, worked as well as, or better than, the Pentax 540's P-TTL mode, on-camera.

Cactus RF60 Flash Review

Great review Class A! Currently I use two Pentax 540's on umbrellas, in manual mode with Phottix radio triggers, and a couple of extra Sunpak 383's for background, hair light, etc. The Metz 52 is a great flash but I ended up sticking with the Pentax units. At the time, I was pretty insistent on P-TTL capability when using flash on-camera, but the known bounce-flash misbehavior of the 540 on my K5ii has led me to believe that "A" (auto-thyristor) mode is more consistent- and for that type of use (on-camera in "A" mode), I must admit the Metz 52 is the superior flash. These Cactus flashes look like a better choice than any P-TTL flash, at least for off-camera use, with truly excellent features. I will probably sell off one of the 540's in favor of a couple of Cactuses.

That being said, if using a Cactus on-camera, does it have a function similar to "A"/auto thyristor mode, or are these strictly manual-only? (I'm thinking of P-TTL / A / M settings as on the Pentax 540.) Thanks Class A!

FA 31 or FA 50 1.7 better in low light?
Posted By NeverSatisfied

I've had a few different 50's (FA 50/1.4, F50/1.7, M50/1.7), and now, for that "approximate" focal range being discussed, I have the FA 31, DA 35 Ltd, FA 43, and DA*55. These are used on a K5ii. Before that, I was using a K20D, and the low light / high ISO capability of the K5ii is amazing. The FA 31 can be good wide open, but as was mentioned, your focus accuracy had better be right on. I did have to do an in-camera AF adjust for the 31; before that one could mistake it for being a little soft wide open. The FA 43 used to be my go-to lens, but has fallen out of favor. I never felt very confident using it at 1.9, but bumping slightly to f2.0 does seem better. The problem with the 43, which I've heard from a few others, is that it can miss focus, sometimes quite noticeably. In comparison, the DA 35 Ltd is always dead-on, and sharp as hell wide open (of course at f2.8, so is the FA 31/FA43/DA*55 !)

For my money, the DA*55 rules, if you're OK with that focal length. I recently got a nice deal on a used model and the AF accuracy is perfect, hasn't missed yet, even at f1.4, and like Dave said it's already good and sharp at f1.6. Bokeh is amazing. The DA*55 blows away any other 50-ish lens I've ever used. I initially had bought it thinking it would be a "just a nice portrait lens", but once I got to playing around with it, wow! The FA 31, 35 Ltd and DA*55 are all about a three-way tie as to sharpness, but the the DA*55 takes the checkered flag in my book, being faster and having weather-sealing and quick-shift focusing as well. A little larger physically but nothing unmanageable. I'm sure that the improved low light capabilities of the K5ii help tremendously, but also, which ever lens you do choose, (or even with your current FA 43), check to see if you in-camera AF needs any adjustment as well. Good luck with your choice!

Why all the love for the F remote and none for the RC1

Timely topic! I was just going to look into a replacement for the F Remote. I've had mine for several years now; it had worked quite well but now it seems that the range is very limited - like maybe 3 or 4 feet! Supposedly the battery in the F Remote is good for thousands of activations. I've probably only used mine a couple of hundred times, if that... unless the camera has something to do with it, too? I only noticed the problem since I've been using the K5ii, although admittedly my use of the remote always has been rather infrequent. So maybe it's time for an O-RC1, or is there even another unit that people recommend?

I picked up a mint DA*55 off Craigslist for $500, and it is extremely sharp even from f1.7. I was happy with the price, and it's turned out to be a very nice portrait lens. I also like that it's WR and has silent AF. (Though I do love my FA 43, the noise from that screwdrive is godawful!) The manual focusing on these SDM lenses (16-50, 50-135, and now this 55) is adequate, certainly much better than either the FA 50/1.4 or FA 50/1.7 I've owned, but the manual focus on say, the DA 35 Macro Ltd or D-FA 100 WR, feels much better. Be that as it may, I've found that the DA*55 autofocus is dead on, no Custom Menu AF adjustment required at all, at least on my K5ii. I do find the hood to be kind of bulky, and so it makes a much larger package than anything such as DA 15 Ltd, 35 Ltd, FA 43, etc. KEH is a good way to go, and their condition ratings are very reliable, perhaps even a bit conservative. The 35 Ltd I bought from them was a very good deal, but was rated only "EX+" (rather than "LN"), merely because it did not come with a pouch or box. If prices are close, I'd certainly opt for KEH and have the return policy and condition ratings, rather than deal with Craigslist. I can tell you my purchase experience with Craigslist was definitely a hassle. Good luck with your search!

Beat me to it JP. Especially at Cyber-Monday pricing! But let me also play devil's advocate and say that the FA 43 Ltd more evenly splits the difference between 15mm and 70! ;) Although I am wondering if the 43 will become an orphan once the 31 arrives...

Of all the various lenses one could own, the FA 31 is the one I was waiting for, to see if there would be a holiday deal. Not that I could really afford it either, so I was subconsciously hoping that there might NOT be a sale! Really, I don't think we'll find it that low again, ever. Ponder ponder ponder... I think I finally put it in my cart at about 11:55 PM. :D
