Fujifilm X-E1, the little brother of X-Pro1

I am one, and I am not going to be peeved about a rumor.

There's three possibilities to explain faster AF with the same lenses:

1) Better firmware, which would be ported to the X-Pro1.
2) Better hardware, this would be unfortunate, but at least it would mean Fuji is learning from its errors. Since I will be in the system for the long run, due to its great lenses, this will also benefite me later on.
3) Sony's new hybrid sensor with phase detection (I believe Fuji are using the Sony's 16mp as the base for their XF sensors, but I could be wrong). Couldn't blame them for not using a product that was not available.

Anyway, as I said, it is just a rumor, and we will have to see just how "better" the AF speed is. The main problem is with the 60mm macro, and I doubt it will be fixable, due to the range of movement needed by that lens.

What I would ask Fuji is to pick a spot for the "play" button and to stop moving it around! It gets confusing moving between the X100 and the X-Pro1.

I imagine it will be priced at the level of the NEX-7 and (rumored) NEX-6. Hopefully it will sell well enough to assure that Fuji continues supporting the system.

Sony A900 opinion

The A900 was released before Sony made their "magic" 16mp APS-C sensor, so the sensor is quite a bit dated now. The sensor has a reputation for being quite noisy, and that was back when it was first released, quoting the DPR review: "Relatively high levels of noise at anything over ISO 400 (ISO 6400 is of very, very limited use)". The gap with the current generation is only wider now, as you can see on the dxomark link below.

If I were in the market for a FF camera, I would be waiting for Photokina in September before making a choice. There are rumours about a very affordable Nikon D600 (close to or even under $2k, depending on the sources) and Sony should announce their A99.

The problem is not that it is an issue. The problem is that a major party is bringing it forward as an issue and is still seen as a credible party.

It has to be close to the price of the K-R: what's the point of removing the mirror assembly, without greatly reducing the size of the camera, if not for price? $600-700 body only, $800 with a kit lens. Add $200 if it has a built-in EVF.

The future zoom lenses will be stabilized, according to mirrorless rumors here: Mirrorless Rumors | Blog | The Fuji X lens roadmap! (Amazon lists the Fuji stuff but with no price)

The primes are not stabilized. However they are very fast, which IMHO is better than stabilization.

Going mirrorless doesn't mean the death of the K-mount necessarily, but many companies have failed and disappeared when they don't join in or when they fight against a technological shift: just ask Kodak. Will the CSC become an alternative to the DSLR, disappear or even replace it? It's too soon to know, since Canikon has barely begun stirring. If the users, who will ultimately decide the fate of the market, prefer the CSC, it will be far better for Pentax to be one of the innovators of this segment, but they are letting that opportunity pass them by.

And the flange distance not being an issue? It always was an issue: rangefinder cameras, with both fixed and interchangeable lenses, and point and shoots were there as an alternative to the SLR in the film era. The issue has only become greater, with the increase bulk of DSLR compared to SLR cameras. And until people will be able to stuff a DSLR in their pockets, they will look for a smaller alternative.

Read it again: he's talking about the upcoming Ricoh GXR module. He's saying that we will see what the NEX-5N's sensor can do without an AA filter.

It looks like a GF1, yeah. However, there's a lot of people who are disappointed: the rumours pointed to a NEX-7 competitor, something looking like the Panasonic LC1, and they got a NEX-5N competitor.

Unless you own a rangefinder to use that ZM lens on as well, I would go with the option #1. Autofocus is always nice, and the lens is over a stop faster than option 2. If you're unsure about the performance of the lens, you can wait for some reviews of it.

Full disclosure: I'm going option #1.

A77 has HUGE noise in RAW

I would hope so: the Pentax K-5 has noise reduction in its raw starting at ISO 3200.

There's also the matter of the transparent mirror and its associated loss of light. Comparing the A77 with the A35 or A55 would be a more accurate representation of the sensor's capacities.

I wonder how far the shares will drop (or rise) when they finally announce the specs. I also wonder who makes their sensor: a 2.8x crop is practically unheard of.

Sony controls their prices more strongly than the other photographic companies, and they rarely offer any discount, except when they are releasing a new model. I wouldn't hold my breath, but if you do, watch for Sony Style coupons or wait for the holidays/boxing day: that's your best hope.

Pentax camera teasing

It's simple really: you have to "update" the camera every 1-2 years, or else the consumers will believe you are falling behind. Just think about how many users and potential users Sony has lost by leaving the A700 laying around for 4 years?

That doesn't mean you have to upgrade your camera, but Pentax will start having troubles selling the K-r when the K-5's sensor is now found in entry-level Sony cameras.

I was toying with the idea of buying one of the Sigma DP line at some point. Their AF is slow and they have bad high ISO, but they go at about 200-300$ used on ebay, they're 1.6x crop and they have a Foveon sensor that intrigued me (until I saw the price on the SD1). I believe Sigma also offers optical viewfinders for them. If money is no object, I would jump on the Fuji X100. Otherwise, I would recommend one of the high grade P&S with fast lenses, like the Olympus XZ-1.

As a NEX user, and despite all the sales hype from the manufacturers, I don't consider the mirrorless cameras to be "pocketable", even with pancakes.

That said, if you want a mirrorless with pancakes and a EVF, there's the old Samsung NX10 (or NX5 or NX11: they're basically the same thing) that goes cheap, since the NX20 is around the corner.

For Sony Alpha, it's either Dyxum (with the lens database) and photoclubalpha.

For canikon, I think it's .

NX200 is out

The Samsung sensor has not been tested yet, and the DPreview samples at 3200 are very noisy. On the other hand, the NEX-5N has improved performance on the already very good Sony 16mp sensor, acording to the Imaging Resource's comparaison here: Sony Alpha NEX-5N Compact System Camera - Hands-On Preview

As for the lenses, I'll concede I envy the Samsung 30/2, but I have not seen many of their other lenses tested. IIRC, their 20mm needs strong software correction, la Panasonic/Olympus, which is a negative for me.

It doesn't have a viewfinder and the screen is fixed: it is less usable than the Sony NEX-5N, which is $200 cheaper.

Camtec photo in Montreal has it for 1175$ and, unlike Lozeau, they actually have a few limited lenses to try in store.
