Good to know, thank you. I planned on selling it but wasn't sure of a price point. How much if I tack on the 18-55 kit lens?

Your first link with the 50mm macro is actually a couple pictures that made me start looking at the KP a bit more seriously and made me start this thread! Great shots and really shows what it's capable of.

Good point. I can probably get away with shooting 3200-6400 ISO max in the vaat majority of situations, and any noise at those levels I should be able to clean up fine in PP if I really needed to.

Maybe I'll wait on a final decision and see what kind of deals are hanging around on the K70 and KP when I'm ready to buy then.

Seems like the KP is the way to go then. Definitely want the better AF performance.

I've been burned with my K-r AF performance, so ready to get something better.

Awesome. From a price standpoint, is the KP worth the extra spend, or can the k5ii or a k70 serve the same purpose?

Iím looking to upgrade from my K-r that I got about 6.5 years ago. My wife and I will be having a baby soon and I want something newer with better image quality and much better low light performance.

Iíve been completely out of the loop when it comes to Pentax bodies over the last 4ish years, so Iíve been trying to get caught up.

I will mostly be using the camera for newborn photography/family pictures/maternity pictures of my wife and outdoor pictures when weíre out and about. My primary needs are:

-Low light/high ISO capabilities. I much prefer natural lighting and wonít be using an external flash since itís a newborn. As our kid gets older Iíll use a flash seldom, as I still prefer natural light when possible.
-Good image quality for general family pictures to hang on our wall and put in a printed album.
-Accurate, quick AF. I donít plan on using MF much at all, especially as the little one gets more mobile around the house.
-Ideally something lighterweight would be ideal, but not too high on the totem pole.

My budget is in the $600-800 range for the body and Iím not opposed to buying 2nd hand through the PF Marketplace. Is the KP doable with that budget?

My kit right now is a K-r, Tamron 17-50/2.8 and the beginner kit lenses. Iím looking around at a nice prime at either 35, 40 or 50 as well, but havenít settled on one yet. Eventually Iíd like to add the DA* 50-135 for great longer distance, candid shots when weíre out, but thatís not too high on the list right now either.

Let the suggestions fly!

Oh believe me, I've tried haha. It's a moot point to him. He's a nice guy, but definitely very, very strongly opinionated for Canon. He considers every other camera to be worthless and not even worth mentioning. My $500 K-r feels better than every other Canon I've used (with the exception of the MK II/III with a grip). The 60-D, 6D, 7D, all just don't compare!

I've definitely experienced the same. I'm an assistant wedding photographer and my boss swears my Canon. If I even mention "I'm considering picking up the K-5ii sometime soon" he goes off on a tangent saying that I shouldn't even consider any other brands and that Canon is the only one to bother considering.

I'm sorry but.. Every Canon other than the 5D MK II/III that I have tried I couldn't stand. The 60D, still a ~$700-800 body only camera, feels super cheap in my hands. Nothing like a K-r or K-5 would. I don't like the idea of needing to spend upwards of 3 grand on a body just to get great quality, and still need to drop another 900-1200 on a lens!

Thanks everyone! That answered my question. Time to save for a new camera body instead. It's not a problem with the k-5 or K-5ii either, right?

Bump!

Does anyone have any insight on if my autofocus may be a bit more accurate with faster lenses? I'm trying to decide if I should just stick with my K-r for now and continue improving the lenses I have available to use, or if I should snag a K-30 or K-5 instead.

Would the AF be a bit more accurate with even faster glass? Currently the fastest I have is the Tamron 17-50/2.8.

Of these which would y'all recommend the most?

Pentax AF-360FGZ

Or are they all pretty much the same?

From my experience, it hasn't fixed the mirror flop problem. I still get it occasionally, but am able to fix it for the time being by unmounting the lens and flipping the control lever a few times thats on the inside left of the mount just to the left of the mirror.

Is there any way to lubricate this lever? It seems that it gets stuck on occasion and by me moving it manually it kicks the lever back into gear.

So you typically only get an AF beam when using a flash that supports PTTL?

Great thanks for the link, I'll read up on that. If it wasn't for the fact that my K-r has been having focusing trouble, I wouldn't care so much about the AF light being present or not. But for my current needs, I think having one would be more beneficial than not.

Thanks Kenyee. Could you recommend any reliable, cheap flashes that have an AF assist lamp and can tilt/swivel? <$100 would be preferable, if possible. The Sunpaks look like a great steal, but they don't have an AF light if I'm understanding correctly.

When under tungsten lighting (Mostly for school based events in seminars), I'm usually shooting anywhere from 1600-6400 ISO, 1/10-1/60 shutter and 2.8-4 aperture. It's always pretty dim in the rooms. I always try to talk to the lighting guys to see if they can help me out at all, but it's always the same answer. "Sorry, its all the lights or nothing." I've played with my AF fine adjustment a bit, but haven't had a chance to dial it in super sharp. I've been meaning to take a weekend to play with it.

I'm just wondering how much an AF assist light on a flash would really help my AF in low-light conditions. I could pick up a Sunpak for like 30 bucks, but they don't have an AF light, IIRC. At least then if that light would help, I could drop $75-100 right now and semi-fix my problem, and then save up for a K-30 at a later date. I'm wanting to wait until April when the K-3 is rumored to be announced and go from there. Prices may drop a bit more!

What does the GN mean? Do you think that an AF assist light would help my focusing issue under tungsten lighting at all?
