Does zoom lens change physical aperture during zoom ?

Does that mean in order to maintain constant aperture through the range, the lens has to be designed to stop down a little at the wide end ? I've no other zoom of similar range so can't compare, and what about zoom with non fixed aperture ? I just thought that all lenses should be designed to make the best use of the max aperture even not preferable in terms of image quality, but aid focusing.

Hi there,

I just find that by looking into the lens my DA 17-70 has 7 blade aperture, which is perfectly round wide open only from 60mm and up, is this normal or just my lens ?

It is one of the sharpest shot taken with mirror lens I've ever seen great job ! I owned couple Tamron mirror before they are the very best of the kind, unfortunately my one got separation in the coating, I traded it for a Russian MTO, the 2nd best of the kind and much easier to find and cheaper.

I believe Pentax uses some sort of hardened glass on the display windows, my 6yrs old K3 shows heavy sign of use but not a single scratch on the glass windows.

Yes that's what I asked for, I don't know of any full body Ti model ever existed.

---------- Post added 08-05-20 at 09:32 AM ----------

Yes looks much better than the Silver model

---------- Post added 08-05-20 at 09:34 AM ----------

I got a LX long time ago, I don't know about the Ti version, every major camera maker got a Ti model back then.

---------- Post added 08-05-20 at 09:53 AM ----------

That's interesting and I missed, no matter how strong the material in use, the body must not be hollow and "resonate" when shutter release and cause camera shake. Long time ago I got a Minolta MX it built like a tank and heavy, together with the heavy 58mm/f1.2 I took my first ever sharp photo, much better than the plastic X700, it was bcoz the camera is solid enough to absorb the shock while the plastic models "ring like a bell".

---------- Post added 08-05-20 at 10:08 AM ----------

It was even harder to build the A10 with full Ti armor...

There are limited edition since the K5, are there any differences to a regular edition beside the body color ? I said in other post that I don't like that kind of silver so I will not bother with it, I am more interested to see one that made with Titanium. I know it is very hard to machine Titanium and the cost is high, but there are already few SLR with Ti edition, the Nikon F3T, FM2T, Contax S2T, OM3 Ti... there are also some so called Titanium DSLR include the rumored (?) K20D, but simply carry the color of Ti not the real thing. Those old Ti SLR of the film era not only became collector's items but also built to last, but I don't see any DSLR company produced such thing, or I missed ? or it doesn't worth to produce such thing as electronics won't last long ? btw my 6yrs. old 1st gen K3 has turned to almost Titanium after lot of bumps and drops, the paint peeling off exposing the metal but it still ticking.

Frankly I don't like the silver version including all previous silver versions, this silver just look odd to me especially when you compare it with the metal mount. No metal afaik has this color except real silver, and silver is not an attractive color to me, I wonder why Pentax bother to paint silver on real metal body ??

You may be right, but less in demand can also mean less chance to ran out of stock, I don't know it was my first try with B&H, I just hoped they can be little more responsive. Just when I was about to cancel the order I received their reply with estimated restocking time of the item.

---------- Post added 07-18-20 at 07:32 AM ----------

Yes I can't really compare the two with great difference in operation size, and I believe B&H is more focused on photographic gears than other consumer electronics. One thing I don't know is how good the after sales service in B&H, multiple times I received items from Amazon delayed, or design problem in the item I wrote a comment but not really a complaint, then soon after that Amazon or the seller contacted me to apologise and issue refund to me without ask, that is more than I expected.

The situation is the same all around the world, but on the contrary Amazon still run very smooth. I ordered some air sanitizer which is one of the most wanted item these days rarely ran out of stock, the backorder max took 3 days, I don't know why the less wanted solar charger takes so long to restock, as of this writing it is still out. The main problem with B&H is the response time, my enquiry took a week to get an answer where 2 days max in Amazon.

I know B&H is very famous many people purchase gears from them, and I placed my first ever order 10 days ago, it was a small portable solar charger panel. I used to buy in Amazon, but that particular item can't be found in there so I try B&H. The item is still 'backorder', no news when it will be available, I sent email to them but no return in 3 days, I tried live chat but it was closed ! I don't know it was the pandemic or anything stopping them, I got much better response in Amazon, only if I can find my item elsewhere I will cancel my order, but the refund may takes forever !

What is your everyday lens ?

Compared to the DA* this lens is sightly slower to focus and hunts a bit in difficult scene like parallel lines, and despite it is full time MF override the focusing ring will move during AF this is little inconvenient and could cause damage to the motor if we hold the ring during AF, it works just like the non SDM 55-300 but without the noisy focusing. I have not fully tested it yet can't tell the optical quality of it, but the macro is really nice it can get as close as the 16-50 if not closer. Overall I love this lens it handles very well, well build and sturdy but not too heavy, especially I got it from a Taiwan seller at low price in mint condition, it has become my everyday lens to replace the 16-50 (SDM failed) and I would not complain even the SDM fails after some time !

Btw I did not modify the lens to shaft drive because I updated my K3 firmware that no longer support that mod.

I finally received the 17-70 used, it is in mint condition, I tried it on my K3 and immediately I feel what a relief ! I missed the SDM silent AF for so long since my 16-50 failed, all my other lenses has noisy motor drive. I also found some good deal of the Sigma equivalent but they are the older model, not the current C model commonly referred to. I did find some minor problem with this lens, the AF has difficulty with horizontal line, for example it hunts and gives up on the aircon front cover 'gill', it may not be the lens but combine with the camera AF sensor to caused that. The things I like this lens are the full time MF override, basic weather seal at the mount, and original Pentax color.

You tamed them all well !

I still got a Pentax KX, Super A, a Fujica ST-605, a Praktica MTL3, a Russian Fed 2, a Lomo Leningrad (wind up camera), and a newly purchased laser cut K mount pinhole cap, it is fun to play with them !

I heard good things about the A7, but sorry I never consider Sony a camera company, it got no root in photography but produced sensor for many cameras, and afaik Samsung produced sensors for Pentax too, also designed and produced the short lived but excellent NX series.

---------- Post added 06-15-20 at 12:17 PM ----------

There is one more on my list I want to try if I've money to spare, it is the weird, unusual but excellent IQ, the Sigma Quartto series, most likely the DP3, or the less likely SD Quartto H. I know the limitation with it, I just want to see how it compares to a regular sensor camera. If I bought it will be a 'keeper', hard to find another silly guy will take it ha !

Oh yeah I forgot I did have a Fuji S1 before, it was a small super zoom with weather sealing smaller than the Lumix. I never enjoy the menu design of Fuji, like the X30 a P&S type 3x zoom camera, I specially hated the multi function ring at the lens mount, it has 'soft detent' which was so tired to use I always 'overshoot' while changing settings, it should be made with harder stops, the menu design layout of Fuji also confusing and slow to use. For example on the XE2, there are custom settings C1-C7, I set C2 to high ISO and flash off..etc., when I done shooting with it I want to return to 'default', but there is no default, when I turn back to C1 the settings will be over written by C2 ! if I want a default I have to set to another custom settings I don't know what logic is that !? overall Pentax has the best menu design and handling nothing can beat !

Another madness with Fuji was the 'silent mode', it had nothing to do with the beeper but to disable the flash what a translation !!! Fuji finally corrected that in later firmware after I yelling in the forum ! beside the menu design the physical handling of Fuji also bad, they finally put a usable grip on it to make it slightly easy to hold without too much of front heavy

---------- Post added 06-15-20 at 11:28 AM ----------

Not quite a miss to me I rarely shoot video but weather sealing is good to have.

---------- Post added 06-15-20 at 11:35 AM ----------

My first Pentax was the K20D I got in a bargain, then after few months I traded it for the K7 in a clearance sale, but it got sensor problem there are color banding at high ISO, I had it fixed by Pentax and traded it soon after for a K5, it got very noticeable improvement at high ISO and I used it for a year, then traded for the K3 I am still using now, my next K would be the replacement of it, not a FF due to size and weight.

---------- Post added 06-15-20 at 11:57 AM ----------

I also used my K lenses on the Fuji XE2, and yes RF type camera takes more patience to use, not a everyday camera but for those want to enjoy photography no rush to produce result.

I shoot Pentax mainly but I also used other made such as Fuji, I love the handling and menu design of Pentax, but I like Fuji's low light quality in high ISO more (XE2 vs K3). I also want to try m43 such as OM, actually my first DSLR was OM E300 (yes a 43 DSLR), and like the styling of digital Pen F since I started from shooting film, unfortunately Pentax has nothing like that. I got couple Russian copy of Leica/Contax RF, they are slow to operate and without a good lens I rarely shoot with them, so that I would love to try the digital version of it, not necessary a real RF but the styling similar, especially good for street and casual shoot while I want to travel light. I've less interest on bridge camera as before, although the sensor is small combine with a mega zoom the size and weight as much as a DSLR why bother, what about you ?

I used to read Youtube products review before purchase, there are very few review of Pentax equipments mainly from the same few Pentaxian, but recently I found there are more even from those Nikon/Canon...etc. die-hard. It seems to me all of a sudden some people feel the threat of Pentax, or they got bored with the brand they used for long time that releasing new models rapidly ? most good words I read about Pentax are the soild build quality and feature value for money, the bad are slow AF and lacks and lags in the video department that I couldn't care less.
