Great variety of colours and very strange textures. Sort of reminds me of early digital ray-traced 3D images and animations.

Thought I'd try a candid portrait of this fellow I met in a local park. Said he was from Montreal and in town visiting relatives. He wasn't staying with his family here in Toronto though - didn't want to inconvenience them he said.

I know this isn't the lens to use for portraits, it means getting up very close, and the bokeh isn't exactly smooth, but I'm pleased. Thoughts?

Second one does it for me. I find those shots so hard to pull off. The lighting on the left-most trees makes for a nice contrast between saturations across the image too.

I agree and like it because of the colours, particularly how they create and affect the balance.

Great photo, and description to go along with it. Will you visit once there is snow and take the same photo?

I fiddled the levels a bit and it is possible to get the stalks to pop out more by bringing down the mids a bit and increasing the contrast and highlight levels. I haven't saved or anything, but would be happy to do it again and post the result if you'd like to see? Maybe it is presumptuous on my part though.. It is a great photo in any case :)

I like the third and fourth because of the diagonal, and slightly more pronounced focal plane. The amount of deck in focus in both, especially the fourth adds a little something to the composition.

Very nicely done. Isn't helping me hold off on buying a 6x7 though.. What kind of film did you use for this? It is very evenly toned. Do you do your own development and scanning too? Wonderful photos in any case.

Toronto had some pretty heavy fog the other night. I spent an hour or two out in it experimenting. The first two images are panoramas stitched together using Hugin:

Six 30s exposures were used for the first. Fifteen 30s exposures were used for this on - it ended up being 59.7 megapixels

The rest are single exposures, each is 30 seconds I think.

That is an early start indeed, but well worth it.

If it was me, I'd be lazy and use a couple ND filters to get up and hour or two later :p

True though using the bellows tripod mount instead of the camera's it is a little easier. It just seems strange with the camera hanging off the back of the whole apparatus.

Thanks LensScribe, it's at the Medical Sciences building on the University of Toronto campus. Was built in the 70's and all the building accents have a genetics theme. I'll post another of the main exterior once I'm happy with it.

Really great use of extension tubes on that strawberry, I find it so satisfying when shots like that turn out, especially at greater than a 1:1 magnification ratio. I'm guessing it was a pretty long exposure, couple seconds?

Glad to see the thread is still alive, I've been back out using my Takumars lately. Current favourite is my SMC 55mm f1.8. Great lens all things considered.

Here's one from the past weekend with it on the K20

And yeah, everyone should have a 105mm f2.8 Takumar in their bag ;)

I've filled it out, good idea.

Keep in mind though that there's an immense selection bias being built in e.g. I took the time and am interested in the results, but I'd imagine many people won't fill it out but still have strong feelings that aren't represented. Hopefully your final analysis can account for that ;)

Check out this set on flickr from someone who made their own K10D: K10D, new split focusing screen - a set on Flickr

The tab isn't strictly necessary either, being careful when swapping is fine. Use tweezers and put a little bit of cotton on each end. That or something else equally soft and you'll be fine :)

You'd have to probably measure each screen for both old and new cameras to see how they would fit. If not, you can cut and file/sand older screens down to size. I was impressed with a screen I watched being made over the holidays for a K10D from an old MV screen. The screen from an ME Super looks like it will be even brighter too :)

esman, prodigital2000 on ebay has them for ~$915 CAD. That doesn't include taxes, but free shipping. Comes with a 1 year International warranty. Despite the fact that they ship with UPS, they're based out of southern Ontario, so no brokerage fees.

Poll: Which size do you print?

Great thread, I've recently purchased an Epson 1400 (was on sale, all my budget would allow, I wanted to get a pigment based printer, but ah well). I've got a few photos I'm working on for 13x19 prints that will be sold and given to a few friends.

Curious about paper though, for normal prints I'm using Espson 8.5x11 premium luster paper and really like it so far. Should I just stick with it for now and get a pack of the same in 13x19? I know there are more premium papers, but so far I'm really liking the 8.5x11 prints, and like the thought that the larger versions will look and feel the same.

Any other larger better papers I should try? Hahnemühle comes to mind, but I'm not sure I'm at the point where I'd appreciate the differences in paper, and it costs a fair amount more.

What other papers do people use for any sizes? Do people here use different papers depending on dye or pigment printers too?

FA 50mm f/1.4 compare to Takumar 50mm f/1.4?

Totally subjective on my part, I've got an S-M-C with 6 blades I think it is. Much nicer wide open than the FA. At f2.8 or so the FA starts to sharpen up and gives a much more 3D look to things than the Takumar IMO.

My $0.02

Thanks ash, good to be headed in the right direction. It's funny, thinking about my normal "style" I always tend to have a shallow depth of field. Turns out it is because I mostly use my camera handheld in natural light. This off camera flash thing is going to be so much fun to start learning, and cheap too!
