Pentax France answers 3 important questions

3 questions à Pentax France sur le 645D - Focus Numérique

Rough summary (answered by Mr. Yazid Belmadi):

1st Question - After all the wait for the 645D, why just a Japanese launch?
A. Excluding Japan, there are no official decisions to launch the 645D in other countries. We need to evaluate the potential of different markets before making commitments.

2nd Question - Will you be requesting the sale of the 645D in France
A. Pentax France would naturally like to offer the product on the local market but we need to measure the cost of such an operation. Such a product would necessarily mean the setup of a PRO service and a dedicated distribution network.
We hope we'll have a nice opportunity to present the 645D at the 'salon' of medium format in the month of June. It would be a good opportunity to 'collect' the opinions of primary medium format users and to get a feel of the market at the European level.

In the 3rd question, he mentions that the price of the 645D + 55mm would be around 10,000 Euros if it's ever offered.

4th Question - After the medium format, everybody's waiting for a full frame SLR. Is this planned?
A. We're currently studying the possibility, but prefer not to make any comments at the moment.

So there you go, still no full frame in the pipeline (unless I'm reading it wrong).

5th Question also asks about 'compact lenses market' (meaning micro 4/3rds and the likes). The reply mentions that Pentax is monitoring that market very closely. But as with the full frame question, there are still no comments.

Someone on the Adobe forums wrote that LR3 is still not feature complete and that new features may find their way into new release(s) of this major version.

For architectural photography it is unusable on its own as the majority of shots would require perspective correction (unless you're using a PC lens). Granted external editing solves the problem, but it's a pain to use, slow, you end up with TIFFs six times the size of RAW files and you lose all the history. Not much left in there in favor of Lightroom.

Read somewhere on Adobe forums that the developers don't actually have it in the pipeline because of some technical issue. And the someone else mentions how Adobe is modifying the DNG specs to include auto distortion control for the Lumix LX3?!

The beta seems slow on my machine, but it's still beta so possibly all the enabled debug code.

Some help with or Alternative for Zenfolio?

Sorry to hear that. I don't think you'd really need a tech support visit from your internet provider anyways (unless they'll be doing additional checks on your system beyond connectivity to their service).

OK, but when you say you're checking from the office, is it a different computer or is it a laptop being used at both locations?

Two different ISPs most likely means that your home ISP is not the culprit, unless it's a case of both ISPs having something in common, like a mother ISP

It's like Marc put it, it could be something in the chain to Zenfolio. As you can see, none of us here are experiencing issues accessing your page.

OK, now this must be some EU big brother thing :)

Bart, you could be having ISP problems. Some ISPs have transparent proxies which cache contents in order to reduce overall traffic and increase network efficiency. Sometimes, these systems can run into trouble. Perhaps you can approach your ISP with the issue. Alternatively you can try dial-up or mobile internet (EDGE/3G HSDPA, etc... which may already be available on your mobile phone) just to test if you'll get the same issue.

I'd also make sure I have a good security suite in place as some worms can sometimes greatly affect your access to the internet (but I'm leaning more towards the former suspect).

Pentax K-7 now supported by Bibble's latest preview of Bibble 5

Actually you'll find that currently not many programs, Lightroom included, can take full advantage of 4 cores, let alone 8. Perhaps this is where Bibble is able to shine, using higher multi-threading efficiency?

I agree with Edvinas, there are many of us who are unable to follow the mega-thread. Even the thought of searching it feels like a huge burden.

On the other hand, I personally do not think that the mega-thread should be closed. It's on a roll, it's setting records and drawing attention, and it's a great show of brand loyalty (regardless whether one likes the new camera or not).

K-7: the specs are known already

Agreed.

It's much like the build-up pre-K20D. When it finally came, it was a major disappointment (next to all the hype). I did eventually buy the camera, and it's a really good camera, but I'm sure we would've all been much happier with the official announcement had we not set our expectations too high up.

That's because their products are RED hot :)

They're the ones who have got the quarter Gigapixel RED 617 planned for the Spring of 2010. 25fps and US$55,000, not bad.

I think it's only a matter of time. The more the concept is perfected the more we're going to use it, and I'm guessing it'll soon be a requirement, not a nice-to-have option. It's almost similar to the film vs digital debate in the early days. I know, it's not the same, I'm only referring to technology adoption here. Once digital was able to deliver, it became a no-brainer.

The media is undeniably changing and I'm sure there's increasing demand for better hybrids especially that we now have easier means to use and publish video.

On the home user level, who wouldn't want a camera that does everything and does it well?

@Mawz and Soccerjoe5: My bad. I've never used the D3 in tracking mode (mainly use it for architectural/landscape still shooting). I shouldn't have judged the feature solely through my application. Thanks for the correction.

I'm also aware that one can reduce the number of focus points.

And I guess in this case, bring the extra focus points on! I would love to have good AF tracking on my hyperactive pre-schooler.

Isn't that what Pentax reps had us believe lately, that they're committed to APS-C for the moment?

Although I would love a larger sensor, I'm sick and tired of the same old rumors that keep getting brought back to life before every major launch (APS-H, FF). Granted, the viewfinder seems larger on the alleged-blurry-spy pic, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Yep, I think Nikon's 51 is a bit of an overkill, especially when you consider how densely packed all of these points are around the center (although its LiveView mode will focus anywhere within the frame).

We can pretty much expect this to be an APS-C, but I'm hoping for much lower noise levels (similar to the D3x with its new filter technology).

Improved AF and LiveView would definitely be welcome.

Unfortunately, it looks like you're right:
"The bad news is that unlike the transition from SD to SDHC, which sometimes only required a firmware update, requires supporting chipsets. So don’t expect to simply firmware upgrade your current player for this new format."

Nikon gives you three choices:

1. Write same files to both cards
2. Start recording on the second card after the first one fills up
3. Record RAW files to one, JPEGs to the second

Found a cheap adapter on eBay. I'm not sure if anyone has tried this, but do you think it is worth the while tinkering with it or a complete waste of time?
