My second trip to Doha in a few weeks. Last time it was nice and warm - around 22 degrees C. This time it was 11-13 degrees C and very windy.

With so many great offerings from Canon, Nikon, Sony, etc., why do you choose Pentax?

I like the silver and black OM-D. I saw an ad for one in which it had a square lens hood on. Love at first sight, but like you say, M4/3

This. This kind of post is why I like Pentaxforums so much. It is the only online forum where I participate nowadays, the only community that I've found which is so relevant.

It's not wasted time if people aim for this.

business - vs - being creative?

The dilemma of making money vs. doing only what you enjoy is not unique to photography. Most people need to make compromises. The only people who can truly do whatever they want are either gifted talent-wise, very lucky, independently wealthy, or live a lifestyle that doesn't need money.

Musicians hired for successful long-running Broadway shows probably didn't get into music expecting to play the same exact set 400 times per year; there's not much room for creativity but the predictable pay can fund other projects. It's not just in the arts, either; auto mechanics, carpenters, etc. Some young person likes cars, maybe they enjoy custom paint jobs or restoring old rustbuckets, and tries to make it a career. There's a limited market for such work so they end up doing more mundane but necessary repairs for money.

To add some unpopular opinions, i find that money (and social media) mostly corrupts the art process, so i have never done photos for money and every single photo i shared on the web is under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license. Yes i am fine with random people editing my photos, Yes i do not want them to use it for commercial purposes and Yes i do not plan to ever make money from my photos.

The point is, when i am out there in the middle of a beautiful moss covered forest, i don't have to think about what a client wants, or if the Internet will "like" it.

All i am asking myself is "how do i capture the mood and atmosphere of this place, how do i capture the beauty here?". It's as much creative freedom as i can get.

I have a 3 day 9-5 office job that just pays the bills, but i also have a 4 day weekend, that gives me plenty of time to make photos. I value that freedom and extra time in my life a lot more than any amount of money.

Thanks. There certainly are tradeoffs. I made more in my last full year in an office job, (2002), than I have made any
year since, by a good margin. I also work more hours a week than I ever did in the office. And yet, I feel a whole lot
freer with with my time. Any day is a weekend, if I so choose. I don't commute. No one is telling me to fill out a TPS
report.

I learned a long time ago that I only need enough money to enjoy a modern bohemian lifestyle. I eat out when I want,
I vacation when I want. I see the doctor when I need. I don't need a new car every 3 years, nor a 60" plasma tv,
nor a vacation home in Vale. Jeans from Goodwill suit me just find, figuratively and literally.

And the best part of it all: I play with fire all the time :D (Ceramics is my primary media. Photography is a secondary
passion, often incorporated with my ceramic art but rarely for standalone.) Firing the wood kiln this week. Quite literally,
stoked.

Has anyone tried the Sigma Art 30 1.4 on Pentax K-1?

I do very much apologize for this kind of "necroposting", I generally avoid it but I figured it might add something useful for the next person doing a forum search like I did. If there is a collection topic somewhere that I boneheadedly missed, please remove/move this post.

While absolutely not perfect (so much fringing), I always enjoyed the 30mm Art on my K-30 and K-3 II, so I was eager to find out if it works well in full frame. Quick online searches led me to believe it would be severely vignetted. From my quick check it seems like nothing that can't be fixed with post processing at F1.4 or a very slight crop at F16.

So the Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC HSM "Art" seems to work decently (or at the very least, usable) on my K-1 II. I set crop mode to FF and these are the resulting images at F1.4 and F16 (didn't really try in between). Also, please disregard the wrongly set date in the EXIF, I've accidentally put in 2018 instead of 2019 when I set up the camera and haven't bothered yet correcting it.

rubber grip on K1 coming undone

For best results with a contact adhesive you want to spread an even layer on both surfaces, let the glue dry and then join the surfaces. If you just lightly "tack" the surfaces together you can reposition if you make an alignment error. Once everything is in place properly press the surfaces together with the ball of your thumb or better yet a small rubber roller.

rubber grip on K1 coming undone

Same here. I asked for some ideas here a while ago. I purchased some glue (done some research, found glue that would suit, asked the seller who told me another choice that was wrong..). The grip was getting lose on the mid-high of the grip, so I sealed it, some of the glue stuck at the edge of the grip that would leave some white traces (not good whenever reselling the camera, obviously would have an impact in price). I was happy but decided that I would use another adhesive next time. Then, few month later, the lower part of the grip started for get lose, so I bought some double sided transparent tape and stuck it under the grip, it was fine. Except, I understood why the grip came lose, is because the grip material gets permanently stretched over time, so that after I glued the rubber layer tight to the grip, there was excess rubber material at the edges of the grip that would prevent proper sealing, so I have to cut 0.5mm of excess grip rubber, and now obviously it is visible as it doesn't fit perfectly at the edge. Anyway, when I pulled off the rubber to insert glue adhesive, I saw that the original adhesive band used by Ricoh looked like old stuff, I just wondered if there was any point to save money on that kind of adhesive. Also, I looked to buy spare rubber grip part for the K1 and couldn't find, so I gave up. We'll see when the grip rubber will stretch further, I'll probably have another camera model by then.

The experience taught me that it's better to remove the whole rubber piece remove the original adhesive so that to get a clean surface. And use a glue that is slow to stick so that it is possible to position the rubber layer precisely on the grip. And the glue must not dissolve the rubber otherwise the rubber itself gets lose again after some time.

Here's an image of the construction under the outer skin: https://www.pentaxforums.com/content/uploads/files/77/1600/k-1_magnesium.jpg. Based on this, I don't think you have much to worry about regarding loss of weather sealing if you peel off and reglue the rubber grips. There does appear to be a body hole in the lower front of the front grip. That would be my only worry.

I picked up the 35/1.4 on sale at B&H with a dock added in for free. If you can wait, it does come up a few times a year. Mine focuses fine, and it really is sharp wide open. I also find the bokeh very nice. I'd buy it again/won't be selling it.

For once, I must say "DON'T LISTEN TO ADAM"! I bought the dock when I purchased the 35mm Art f/1.4, thinking it would come in useful for firmware updates and all the future lenses I would buy from Sigma.

However,
  1. There never was a firmare update for the K-mount version; it still runs 1.0.

  2. There were no future Sigma K-mount lenses, and there never will be.

  3. The lens didn't need any focus adjustment.

So the dock was the most useless piece of photo equipment I ever bought.

I was having a quick look, The Sony with a 12-24, is vastly more compact than the K-1 and 15-30, and probably almost twice the price. But half the weight and bulk.

This story makes me think of my 1st photography class, of course the teacher was going to teach us how to change the settings of our cameras and the instruction to the class was:

"The ones with Canon, go to the left, and the ones with Nikon Cameras go to the right"

— Huh? and you?
— Sorry, I'm Pentax but I know how to change the ISO.

Lol
