what is focal length when using extension tubes.

yeah noted - point not lost that using tripod plus timer = no antishake. I've found using a tripod to be a pain in the ass. in heavy undergrowth, chasing insects it's hard work changing position. plus tring to get the legs deployed rattles the undergrowth about too much.
I tend to use monopod - hence shake reduction still brings some benefit, or handhold.

Agree with the diffused flash point also.
I use an old B&H flashgun with tissue paper over the front..

I think the suggestions to add the tube length to the focal lenght seems to give best results.

Thanks guys.

Ben is of course right - which is the point i was trying to get across.
The FL does not change. but as newarts says the length of any rotation about the sensor plane increases.

I'd assumed adding the tube length was correct.

Will try and will report back in due course.

On a K7, and other Pentax bodies - when using manual lenses - you set the focal length of the lens for correct antishake operation.

If I mount a 12mm extension tube and a 50mm lens what should I set the focal length to on the camera?

is it still 50mm or is it 62mm?
I assume that at this combination the difference between 50mm and 62mm is unlikely to have a profound effect on the Antishake system.
But, logical thought drives me to assume that the more extension tubes one mounts, say 3 tubes totalling 60mm, the longer the assembly gets.
Even if the actual FL does not change I would assume that the extra lenght has an effect on the antishake.

So with a 50mm lens and 60mm of tube - should I set the camera to 50mm or 110mm? [think the actual closest setting in body is 100mm]

thanks in anticipation.

interesting that the 10d worked, but not the K7.!?

Haven't had time to look closely at both camera throats to see what the difference is...

thanks for replies.

I double checked.. I may have been mistaken about it working on the K7.
I mounted the same lens (135 m series) with a tube on my K10d. Works fine.
Same setup on the K7 - does not stop down.
All other lenses, A-series, M-series, 3rd party all work fine in all modes on the K7. (without tube)

If you mount the tube to the lens and move the actuator it stops the lens down.

I've tried all modes, M is the one I want (and the mode that works on the 10D).

I've tried mounting tube to body then lens to tube, and vice versa.

Looks like i'm not alone..

Can anyone actually confirm that they are successfully using an M-series lens with auto-extension tube on a K7.?

K-7 won't stop down with auto extnsion tube fitted...I swear it used to though..

If in mount a lens like the 50mm M series, in manual mode, press the green button or flick the dof preview lever the lens stops down to whatever the value set with the aperture ring is.
If it take it off and fit an auto extension tube (the one with just the lever, no contacts) and refit the lens it now won't stop down when green button or dof preview is operated.
It shoots, but the aperture stays wide open.
this is irrespective of whatever the aperture ring is set to.
in the custom menu I do have 'use aperture ring set' to 'permitted'.
Same result whatever lenses are mounted.

I swear it used to stop down the last time I used the tubes..

Any advice?

Shipped last monday to Pentax (johnsons photopia).
Reurned today.
Replaced aperture control block, strip, test calibrate and clean. 180 inc the vat.
Can't complain at the turnaround, although I did take a proactive line and phone a few times to follow progress.

thanks.

right area. different problem.
the spring looks like it is in the right place. but the slider is not moving freely up and down when the DoF preview is activated.
It does confirm that the spring is on the right side of the protrusion on the slider... I had wondered if it was the wrong side... and had been tempted to flip it over.

ta once again.

thanks for info.
no grip.

The dial works on the body, and the f-numbers on the lcd display change, but the camera physically does not set the lens aperture correctly.

I'm expecting at least 100 bill for repair.
I'll ship to pentax on monday.

My k10d has stopped stopping lenses down properly.
None of my lenses now work correctly at large f numbers.

It looks like the device in the throat of the camera that drives the lever on the lens isn't operating.

any idea how much this is going to cost me?

They used a number of set ups.

Beauty light, hair light, light with a snoot pointing at the background for the red and black shots.
Huge soft box with the model in front of it for the white BG.
Green bacakground is lit with the same soft box, but I'm in front of it.

To be honest - the studio team set it up... I pretty much pushed the shutter.
I was using my pentax K10d and a Pentax F 28-80mm.

The story behind these is:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was lucky enough the score a day as a guest of Digital Photographer Magazine [ Digital Photographer - For enthusiasts and pros ], monday just gone.
They run a feature each month called 'Improve your skills', and as a part of this I got to spend a day at Garage Studios, in Brighton [Garage Studios Studio lighting photography course ] doing their one day studio lighting course.
I spent the day with a pro photogrpaher called Darkdaze [ Dark Daze Photography: About ] showing me various lighting set ups. These are some of the shots I came away with..

Want something compatible with a K10D.
do not want to spend a fortune. upto circa 100, say... maybe a shade more.
must be tilt and or swivel head.
do not mind second hand via ebay...

know nothing about flash guns...

what do you recommend.?

Just bought an FA series 80-320 lens from ebay.
When using it on the K10D, with the Aperture ring set to 'A' I'm finding that unless i apply light pressure, holding the ring turned against it's maximum rotation - the lens does not work on the camera.

What does the 'A' position do within the lens - is operating a mechanical linkage, or operating a microswitch?

Any idea what the repair cost is likely to be?
