HDR Mode

I've done quite a number of comparisons of the five HDR modes on my K-1 and my impression is that the auto setting does it's own blend and isn't one of the other settings that is picked and used. However, I am by no means certain of that. Auto was usually closest to 1 in my tests but didn't appear to be identical.

Printer Problems

Thanks again for the replies. I did check that all of the cartridges were in the correct position and they are. Other than that I haven't had time to work on this problem any further. The suggestion to use an online printer service has also occurred to me and sounds more and more like a possibility. I have used in the past and was satisfied with the service and results. It's just that it's so nice to come home after shooting landscapes, do some processing of a few chosen images, and then be able to look at prints immediately. So I'll keep working on the problem, at least for awhile.

I really don't think the auto-focus is that bad on the K-1

It seems to me that much of the slow and poor focusing reputation of the K-1 is due to the Digital Photography Review report on the K-1 not long after it's introduction when they reported an 85% rejection rate on shots of a bicyclist. And there were harsh criticisms of other aspects of the camera in the review also. In my opinion the DPR reviewers never learned the camera will enough to accurately test it. I'm sure this review hurt K-1 sales for a time and I think reviewers have a responsibility to be well informed on the equipment they are reviewing, and accurate.

After that report was released there were photos posted on this forum of sharp K-1 shots of automobile, motorcycle, and horse racing, dogs running etc. I have never since visited the DPR website since that deeply flawed review and don't plan to in the future. Just a personal protest and boycott.

Polarizing Filter Pricing

I second this. Awhile back I purchased what was supposed to be a Hoya from Amazon and I suspect it is a fake. The price was unreasonably low and the wording on the filter rim is different than my other Hoyas I have. Amazon would never knowingly sell a fake but there is no way they can be certain about every listing. The real Hoyas are excellent as was a Marumi I had in the past.

Stitching a panorama on the cheap?

It isn't free but Affinity Photo does Panorama Stitching very well, also focus stacking, and is very easy to use for this purpose. It will stitch a large number of photos all in one process which is very easy to use. It's a one time fee of $50, on sale for $40 at times (might be on Black Friday?), updates are all free, and there is a free trial period. It's a very full featured photo editing program.

I didn't intend for this reply to be attached to another message - sorry, I goofed and can't change it.

Editing K-1 In Camera HDR Filles

I realize this is a very old thread but I thought it might be useful for someone to know how I solved the problem of not being able to upload an in camera (F-1) merged HDR file (consising of 3 merged files) into a photo editing program. At the time of this thread thought I did it once with DCU5 but later was not able to do so, every time getting a single file of the three, not a merged one.

What I finally found worked was the advice to convert the merged (DRG) file in camera to a TIFF file, as described in pages 77 and 85-6 of the F-1 operating manual. It was then very simple (and I need simple!) to send the TIFF file to a SD card and then upload the file to a photo editing program, in this case Affinity Photo, and do a full editing/processing of the file (that is, as full as I wanted it to be). Goal finally accomplished, to my great delight.

Thanks to all who tried to help me with this problem. The image I used came out quite well.

Do you like the unique design of the K-1 lcd?

Yes, I like it. Since most of my K-1 use are landscapes on a tripod I don't often use the tilt screen but occasionally it's very useful. For example, when I shot the eclipses of the sun and moon the camera was on a tripod but at a very steep upward angle and using the tilt made the process much easier (and easier on my aching back!).

Shutter shock with small primes

I agree. I use a K-1 for landscapes, almost always on a tripod. I feel the same way and prefer to compose using the viewfinder. However after composing and adjusting settings as needed I routinely switch to LV with ES now on and take the shot (The camera is set for ES which turns off automatically when using the OVF and back on when LV is started). I also use a 2 second shutter delay. I have both the FA 77 and 43 and haven't noticed shutter shock or any other negative effect when using this simple method. I haven't been able to read every one of the many posts on this thread an it this has already been covered I apologize.

Longer Telephoto Lens for the K-1

i use the DA* 300 with my K-1 for landscapes when I need reach for somewhat distant mountains. It frequently allows me to frame the scene just as I want it. It is an excellent lens although I do not have experience with the other 300s mentioned to make comparisons.

So do I understand correctly that DPR contacted this reviewer and attempted to influence his review? I find the ethics of this questionable. Aren't reviews supposed to be the independent findings and opinions of the reviewer? I stopped reading DPR sometime back and am now even less likely to do so.

Never, don't even own one. I use careful storage techniques (during travel etc.) and a short lens hood if I feel I need more protection than great care in storage, handling and usage. Have never had a problem.

Zenitar 16mm vs Rokinon (Samsung) 14mm

If you can find a used Irix 15 within your budget that might be worth considering. There is currently one on Amazon for $400 but I don't know what that translates to in Australian dollars or what shipping would be. I haven't checked ebay. Most reviews on this lens are very good.

Being retired I'm in the same financial situation as you so I can relate. This year I've been trying to slowly assemble a lens kit of primes for my K-1 and it's been very difficult, even though all of them are used.

Editing K-1 In Camera HDR Filles

The raw files in the HDR settings in the K-1 involve taking 3 images in quick succession (automated) and then the camera merges them in one image file. The resultant merged file is about 120 mb (40 X 3).

Thanks, I missed that.

Rent a K-1?

The K-1 is a superb landscape camera and it's possible that you might find you like the image quality of your K-1 shots as compared to the K-3, but I emphasize possible as I've never made the actual comparison. IOW, possibly you would find some technical benefit gain, especially in very large prints.

There is very little to lose by renting one for a week and that should answer your questions. I've never regretted changing from APS C (a Canon) for landscapes and would recommend trying the rental. Please let us know what you decide.

Famous Internet Reviewer Has Good Things To Say About Pentax K-1II

This seems to be saying that only a professional photographer is qualified to review and render opinions on photography equipment. I disagree and think there are certainly photographers who don't make their living taking photographs who are qualified and have the ability to do quality reviews.

K1 Warranty did you need it?

I've had my K-1 for two years and not one single problem. A "drops and slops" warranty, or whatever damage coverage is best called, might be a better choice than an extended warranty and are inexpensive. I did buy one of those but haven't used it either.

Lens recommendation for landscape photography
Posted By wanderer2

The description of the territory you will be shooting, "lakes, mountains, and greenlands" sounds much like the Rocky Mountains where I live and do much of my photography. When the word "landscape" is used the automatic first thought for many is wide or ultra wide angle. However, in this setting I often have the need for much longer reach. The longest of the lenses you have is apparently the 43 and I know I would almost immediately be wishing for a longer lens. Because of your weight considerations I can't advise you on exactly which longer lens(es) to take but I would want at least the 28-105, and one other longer lens if at all possible. I hope this is of some help.

Pentax 24-70 verus Tamron 24-70?

According to all of the accounts I have read the weaker borders and lack of sharpness of the 28-75 are when wide open and disappear by f5.6. Although my experience with the lens on my K-1 is not yet extensive it does agree with the reports, f8 & f11 on a tripod being sharp.

I wonder if Sun Camera will accept K-1s from owners in the US for the upgrade? Given the concerns about Precision Camera it might worth the higher shipping costs, etc. for the peace of mind.

Since this thread has reappeared I'll give an update on my post from last November. Since doing the update the oscillation of the image on the lcd I described has never recurred, not even once. So that appears to have been the instability that Ricoh was describing.

Using the DA* 300 on a K-1

The DA* 300mm arrived yesterday and the FOV is indeed 300mm on the K-1 (equivalent if that needs to be added) as everyone said it would be. As best I can tell from the first half dozen or so shots of the Teton Range from my home it's IQ is indeed terrific. I'm looking for sharpness that will support the occasional very large print and it appears this lens has that . I much appreciate all of your opinions, uniformly positive, on this lens - it sure looks like a keeper.

K-1 HDR Settings Question
Posted By wanderer2
Replies: 8

I have never done HDR in either post or in camera. I would like to try the in camera HDR in my new K-1. There are five settings in menu 3 for the HDR function (in addition to off), Auto, 1,2,3, and ADV and I can't find any explanation or definitions of these in the operating manual. Any help in understanding these would be appreciated. Also, is there any reason not to use the auto align setting (landscape scene on a tripod)? Thanks.

Upgrade or Trade K-1 In for K-1II

I'm not sure I understand the question, but if it involves what skill, or feature, that i would get from the K-1 II that I don't have with my K-1, the answer is the new handheld Pixel Shift Resolution capability. My K-1 is now used almost exclusively for landscapes on a tripod with PSR but the option of being able to use the K-1 II quickly handheld with PSR will be useful for me.

---------- Post added 03-14-18 at 04:24 PM ----------

Perhaps now Adam but will that be so after the K=1 II is on the market? I can't sell mine ahead of time and be without a camera. But thanks for the advice.

---------- Post added 03-14-18 at 04:26 PM ----------

Thanks Tax. I hadn't considered that, being stuck on the "new is better" reasoningl

---------- Post added 03-14-18 at 04:28 PM ----------

I almost always use electronic shutter with my K-1 and don't know if it has any shutter shock or not - if it does I haven't recognized it. But that's another reason to go with the upgrade - thanks.

Hoya UV filters

A lens hood is another option for protection. Some prefer filters, some prefer hoods, some use both. I use as short as possible metal lens hoods, about 1 inch, with a lens cap on the hood, on each of my lenses, usually removing the hood before shooting unless there is a specific need for it. The drawbacks to this method are that it takes up more space in the camera bag and at times the cap may come off the hood. Many think that adding another layer of glass on a lens with a uv filter may degrade the image somewhat, and I did have one experience where some damaged occurred despite a filter. I don't know if the image degredation is true but would rather avoid the possibility and a hood is cheaper than a filter. It has worked well for me. I also keep longer hoods for when the primary need is glare protection.
