Living in Canada

Congrats on your wedding! I live in Toronto and love it here, but other cities are great as well. I really enjoy visiting Montreal when I have the opportunity. Why don't you come for a visit, spend a few days in Toronto, Montreal, and even Vancouver if you have the time/budget? Then you could see what you prefer, as all Canadian cities have their own unique vibe. You'll probably be better able to make an informed decision than relying on forum members voting for their favourite city. By the way, unless things have changed, Montreal probably still has more affordable housing than Toronto, though not speaking French would probably be something of a drawback (not necessarily a deal-breaker, though).

Soccer VS Football (split off from Pentax at 2010 World Cup thread)

We mostly call it Soccer in Canada, though it should be noted that Toronto's professional team is called the TFC or Toronto Football Club (actually it's officially just "Toronto FC").

As to what soccer should do to become more attractive to American audiences: it shouldn't do anything. It's already the world's most popular sport for good reason. Whether Americans dig it or not is irrelevant.

first Pentax K-7 full review w/ FW 1.0

Very true! In theory, there's no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I'm afraid this is part of a large trend of extremely lazy journalism that I am noticing more and more of. Writers who just go through the feature list and fulfil the required number of words. Editors who just don't care.

All I know for sure, is that we aren't the target audience for this type of review. This is geared more for the tyro who is only looking for confirmation that he should just go ahead and buy that 500D/ 50D/ 5D he's been lusting after, not that off-brand also-ran Pentax that's trying to rock the boat. (Although to be fair, the only DLSR brand they really seem to give consistent love to is ... Sony.)

Final 'con': 'tough competition to compete against'

What does that even mean? That having good competition is a negative for this camera?! I'm so confused.

k7 FW1.0 high iso images available

Looking at the RAW files, it appears that these are all about 1 stop underexposed. Therefore, I consider the ISO 3200 noise representative of a well exposed image at ISO 6400. Therefore ... Looks good! The ISO 6400 shot has way more noise than the 3200 shot, but again, 1 stop underexposed so really it can be considered pushed to ISO 12800 - and not all that different from K10D at ISO 1600.

Thanks to Falk Lumo. These are the best presented high ISO shots so far.

Um... 'Olympus?' Can't get much more 'Western' that a mountain in Greece. By the way, Olympus took their name (in 1921) from the Greek mountain of the gods because the previous name of the company was Takachiho, which is a Japanese mountain of gods.

New 60-250 able to use K-7 contrast AF?

Actually what he said was that all the DA* SDM lenses perform the same: fast and silent. I'm sure the screw drive AF lenses aren't silent, but it sounds like they are supported.

I haven't heard this business about lenses having to be updated to support contrast-detect AF from anyone but Mr. Mabo. I'm not sure where he got that from, but it doesn't appear to be true.

Yes, I know about them, but thanks anyway. My friend wanted to go into a store and buy one, not seek out a lower price via eBay. Anyway, it looks like Prodigital2000 is going grey market these days, as they're only offering the 1-year international warranty with their products. Or am I wrong about that?

No new and real competitors for Pentax K-7?

Pentax owns the prosumer space for now (at least on specs). I'm a realist and don't see them outselling the D400 or 60D when those are released, market forces being what they are. But it all starts with mindshare, and the K-7 has bought a ton of that.

Where they're suffering is in the lower end. Yesterday a friend asked me to help her pick out a beginner dslr. She's on a budget, and it came down to the Olympus e520 and the Nikon D60. I would dearly have loved to be able to recommend the K-M to her, but it cost about $100 more than the others - a hard sell when she ended up paying ~$530 for the D60. In this case, my friend was buying a camera more than a system (even though she used Pentax in her film days), but if you can hook them on the low end - even if they don't think they're buying into a system, then you have a much better chance of keeping customers once they aspire to something better.

I don't fault Pentax; I think they're making the most of limited resources to compete in the DSLR space, but it's a shame they don't have a slightly cheaper model to compete for price with the likes of the D60 and e520.

update: I just checked Amazon.com and they do look competitive, with the K2000/K-M coming out cheaper than the D60, so perhaps I have to put it down to Pentax having recently screwed up their pricing in the Canadian market.

My question is whether or not can affect RAW images as well as jpgs. Because if the result is a jpg, then it's no better than what may be accomplished in ACR. Anyway, didn't the K20D have Dynamic Range Expansion? I know Nikon has something similar
on many of their upper tier cameras. It remains to be seen whether the K-7 brings anything new to the table. Mostly, I'm just hoping for D700-like headroom in dynamic range processing.

K-7 - K20D High ISO comparison Shots

Good catch: according to the EXIF data, the K20D file was shot in RAW and made a trip through Photoshop CS3 before being presented, while the K-7 jpg was direct from camera. Other than that, the two photos were taken with different lenses, of different subjects, on different days.

Rather than being a controlled test, the photographer probably had limited time with the K-7 and snuck his SD card in the slot, then quickly shot the images we see here (and probably without the Pentax rep's knowledge or permission). Then a day later, he tried to take similar shots at home using his K20D (though, he shot in RAW and used ACR which automatically applies chroma noise reduction).

So I think it's pretty obvious that this is anything but a fair test. Let's wait a bit before jumping to conclusions, eh? [edit: Not directed at lol101; I get that you were joking in your last sentence]

Are we about to say goodbye to a well known camera company

Useless article - an overall atmosphere of FUD with a couple very large logical fallacies:

1) First he argues that Canon and Nikon are too big to fail so it must be a smaller company; then he supports his article by mentioning car companies. Newsflash: Two of the Big Three filed for bankruptcy. So no, there's no such thing as a company that's 'too big to fail'. There's no reason why if one camera manufacturer 'had to' fail, it couldn't be Canon or Nikon.

2) The last two sentences: "But there’s no doubt at least one will fail. It’s unavoidable."
These are completely unsubstantiated conclusions. Nowhere in the article has he explained why such an outcome is inevitable, other than by stating that times are tough and the (American) auto industry isn't doing so well.

My conclusion: he's just trying to look smart/connected/prescient by vaguely implying some inside knowledge without actually having any. I also think that he's basically just voicing his desire that a camera company other than Nikon or Canon will fail. Yawn.

Your comment makes absolutely no sense. Why would you expect a good photographer not to use exposure compensation?! Do you think there's no point in putting an exposure compensation button on a good camera? If you don't like the concept of exposure compensation, perhaps you should stick with point-and-shoots.

If you need an explanation, here it is: a camera is just a tool in a photographer's hands. No matter how advanced or automated a camera is, a good photographer will always know more about what he wants to convey than a camera does.

In some ways, even the K10D equals the IQ of the D700 in the right conditions. Where the D700 really pulls ahead is in high ISO (obviously) and dynamic range, which it has quite a bit more of than the K10D. I really hope that the K-7 delivers solid improvements in both these areas.

Anyway, I'm excited, because I'm reading nothing but good reports, and mucho positive buzz!

If you want to buy locally (in Canada), Henry's has it listed for $1499.99, which isn't so terrible considering the exchange rate.

You're welcome!

The Nikon D700 has a virtual horizon mechanism where you can see and correct for off-axis rotation in the viewfinder using the same scale used for manual metering.
......|......

When the little tick is in the centre of the scale, the camera is horizontal (also works in vertical orientation). Would be nice if the K-7 had either that, or a mode where it could automatically correct for slight tilt. That would be cooool.
