the k-1 sensor is now two generations behind what sony is offering in ff, and 645 is a generation behind what fuji are offering in mf. no doubt they are working on some killer cameras, but two aspc releases close together? don't think so. can't wait, i'm sure they're going to be good.

no, never tried the teleconverter... if they invent one that doesn't degrade image quality, i'll be all over it. past f14 they're both suffering but i think the 90 is better at f10-14... plus it's great at 2.8, and wr. the 90 really reminds me of the da*300 on ff... doesn't really do anything wrong. the image stablization on the 90 is good.

the irix is shorter (if you need to use a flash/diffuser, lens doesn't block the light as much if the subject is close), weather sealed, handles ca better, faster, cheaper, more flare resistant, readily available, and better at f10 on. the sigma is no slouch though, and sometimes i think it produces more vibrant greens. if you're pointed towards the sun, even with the hood, the sigma can lose contrast.

wow, thanks! the moth was way harder though.... such a thin plane to focus on in the woods at night... took a few tries.

for insects (always with flash) on ff/crop - the sigma 70mm (but need tubes with aperture contact pin) and the dfa50mm macro. if it's raining hard, the dfa100! the elicar 55 is great too, but i almost never end up using it... the front element is recessed a lot, so once you put tubes on it, it's impossible to get light on subjects that are really close to the lens.

for snakes, dragonflies, things that size on ff/crop the sigma 180 or irix 150... both great, slight edge to the irix... mostly i use natural light with those. i always start off with the da*300 though, and switch cameras or lenses if i can get close enough to the subject.

on mf, the dfa90 for larger things, 75 or 55 on tubes for smaller stuff. the 120 is good for larger things... gives you a little more distance before they scurry off, but for me they're too similar in fl, so i'll probably sell the 120... a 200 macro on the 645 would be wonderful. i don't have any long lenses for the Z yet.

having been disappointed with the sharpness of the fa120 at apertures smaller than f10, i've settled on the fa75 on a pile of extension tubes... much more compact (easier to get light on a subject with flash) and seems a bit better a f13/14 than others. for anything smaller than a nickel, it makes more sense to use a k-1 or k-3. all handheld

still fooling around with different macro options... i think this was the dfa55 on tubes, the fa35 on tubes, and the fa120... although i think my favorite so far is the fa75 on extension tubes.

thanks and ahhh... new car smell :D

i agree, images are more tolerant of sharpening. but at 100% size, the 120 is not as sharp as the 55... it might be diffaction, so next time out i'll try it a little wider aperture... the k3/k1 with the dfa50mm macro or the sigma 70mm macro have really spoiled me in terms of looking at images 100% size. i mean... you really have to nail everything, which isn't always possible, but when you do those lenses are really wonerful at f10-14.

i will try! the next one will probably be the 300*, then a 35, then 150. yikes, i have to sell some of the older k-1 lenses i don't use as much.

found a screaming deal on a basically new Z, waiting for extension tubes to arrive. first pic with the fa120 macro, didn't nail focus... which is a little more critical on mf... but whatever, happy to have better colors. nice to learn that the handheld rules are the same on mf. i wish the 120 was a little sharper, but maybe i'll have to back up a little and use f8 or something. i'll rent the 90 at some point. as for the few casual portrait shots i did quickly, seems like a lot less time in post, things just look right more quickly, unless i'm dreaming. the dfa55 is great!
