Once I saw Olympus release the OM-D E-M1X last year, I knew for certain that their management were not up to the task of keeping the company alive in today's challenging times.

Out of curiosity, do you have any images out of the camera (white or blank, anything) that were saved immediately before and after the camera went weird?

I ask because I wonder if a look at the full EXIF metadata (full, as in read via via EXIFTOOL, not munged by for example Lightroom) in any of those images might provide some useful diagnostic data - eg about camera settings, camera body temperature etc etc.

IMHO, months ago, governments in USA, Italy, France, UK, Australia etc should have just issued every household a box of 20 face-masks, plus a box of 100 disposable gloves, and issued instructions that everyone must use at least the face-mask when going out shopping or to mass events, use gloves when handling shared surfaces, wash hands regularly etc. Total cost per household - less than $20. Much less disruption to business and the economy.

Social-isolation not as necessary, as mask and gloves achieve the same thing. Probably not workable for restaurants and bars, of course, but good for most else.

I think that will be key - for example keep the FA77's optical formula, which is what produces it's specific imaging appeal. But get rid of it's unfortunate tendency to purple-fringe by applying the newest Pentax lens coatings to it's glass. Pentax could have done this long ago, if only as a silent upgrade to newly minted FA 31/43/77's.

It seems that the Tamron works OK with TC's, which is not common with other 70-200's. But there is still some resolution loss.

It's a tricky call.

I suspect that, regettably, even if they 100% retained the external form of the 'classic' FA Ltds, with 'simple' modernization of just individual lens components like the coatings and AF motors in particular, any 'modernized' FA Limiteds would inevitably produce different images. Different 'pixie dust', different allure.

With the grim reaper seemingly on everyone's door-step nowadays, PentaxForums may need an 'my expected Covid-19 death' register, so that people can list their gear in advance, with price and next of kin/estate contact details. :(

Bleak times.

For some reason YouTube suggested this as the next video to play after yours ended:

I think that if only 5% of the scientists and resources we devote to various fields like consumer imaging, mobile phone production, cosmetics, advertising (and of course the vast amounts we spend on the military) were applied to medical research, stuff like coronavirus outbreaks anywhere in the world could be stomped in a week.

Not here [so far]... Pretty stable with some of the DNG's I just threw at it.

v5.8.6 even seems a bit faster to work with than previous iterations, which is a pleasant surprise.

In the old days, not every site was HTTPS.

Ricoh probably thought that since no sensitive data was being transferred on that part of their site, a secure certificate wasn't worth bothering about since the data flow didn't need encryption. They do know how to do HTTPS if need be (eg PENTAX RICOH Imaging Store), of course.

HTTPS nowadays as a identity verification tool is pretty worthless too, since most website certificates are issued without any proof of identity requirement.

As a basic check, examine the URL and the rest of the site to see if the address seems legit.

I had to dig to find an old 2014 thread here on PF, but there is some useful material there:

More details about diffraction correction - PentaxForums.com

including a Fujitsu PDF (link still works, amazingly):

No sensor logic diagrams or details though.

On paper, yes. And usually tied to specific on-brand lenses too.

But as the incoming image data in modern computers digital cameras makes it's way from sensor to image processor to SD card, lots of clean-up work is always going on to varying degrees.

On the subject of diffraction, what are we really seeing nowadays in relation to diffraction and CA?

In-camera diffraction correction, as introduced with the K-3II onwards for example, uses a capability built directly into the Milbeaut imaging chip. And that chipset and capability is shared by Nikon and others. So oftentimes we may not see an optical problem at all, if the correction is taken care of in-camera [optionally, or sometimes non optionally].

Vecnos - A new Ricoh spin-off brand for 360 cameras

What I find most interesting about this news is that the 360 camera announced is likely to be the first of several new products, or even product families, under this new Ricoh startup:

As the DPR intro says:

Ricoh has announced it’s created a new startup called Vecnos, which will focus on developing new specialty cameras, including its first device, a new 360-degree camera designed specifically with selfies in mind.

So what else could be under development? A drone system?

DxO users: which extra Pentax/Ricoh lens/camera modules do you want?

They have no lens module support in K-mount for the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG Macro HSM II. That's my current gripe with DxO. I've asked about it a few times.

DxO keeps on suggesting the Pentax or Tamron 70-200's or the Sigma OS 70-200 as lens options, but they aren't a good enough match.

XF10 is relatively cheap - costs less than a 1 inch RX100, about half the price of a GRIII, only $100 more than the 1 inch Lumix at B&H. And lack of a zoom in such designs means less dust entry, better lens to sensor optimization, more compact body. So pros/cons.

One or two APS-C cameras (fixed lens though) are even more compact than your Panasonic - the GR III and Fujifilm XF10 spring to mind. Bigger, better sensor, excellent lens on both too.

Once upon a time, Pentax was known for small SLR bodies with lots of tech inside, just like the Olympus reputation. Think Olympus OM-1 vs Pentax MX/ME Super etc. That day could come again.
