The cover is fine...it's two of the tabs on the body that have broken off.

Now that is very clever! I still think that the all the money that I spent on Legos for my sons was the pest toy money ever spent. The hours that they spent in creative play was great.

Thank you for your suggestions. I had not considered 3D printing...that may be worth pursuing. Posting in the "wanted" section is a good idea as well. Unfortunately gluing the tabs is not an option as they have disappeared. I put them in a small plastic zip bag on my desk and when I returned in the morning to a nice clean desk they were not there and I was unable to track them down. I may try to make some.

Thanks again,

Best regards

Hello,

I am painfully aware of the Pentax repair part availability. As a long time Pentaxian, (my first SLR was a Honeywell Spotmatic) I remember when we could get some repair parts. In any event, times have changed and I am in need of the rear housing for the base of my flash. I have never had an issue with the battery door but when someone at work knocked the flash, which was in its case, off my desk and onto a box two of the tabs on the housing broke off. this was a fall of about two feet. I assume the weight of the batteries must have been a contributing factor. The flash works fine if I tape the door closed but it is intermittent at times and not reliable for tripod or consecutive shoots. What I would like to find is a cadaver unit with a good back half of the base that I could cannibalize to replace the broken one on my unit. I have checked eBay but have not had any luck. I would greatly appreciate any ideas any of you might have. I am an engineer with experience in repairing electronics and micro-electronics so I am capable of accomplishing the task. The flat rate charge from precision Camera coupled with the shipping is about $200.00 plus a very long wait time so I am looking for other options. I would greatly appreciate any ideas or suggestions any of you might have.

Thank you all in advance,

Best regards,

Shoe mount Flash for my K-5

I pulled the trigger on the Pentax AF540 FGZ from B&H and it arrived yesterday. I am looking forward to using it soon. My first impression is favorable albeit a bit overwhelming. The pin on the mount of my unit appears to be metal so they must have made a change. I also purchased some Pearstone rechargeable batteries with the charger and a Vello diffuser so I have plenty of things to experiment with and a hope to have a lot of fun along the way.

Thank you LeDave, that appears to be one of the common problems that I have read about. It looks as though you may have found the fix.

I am glad to hear of your experience with the 540 FGZ. I think that I will most likely purchase one, but I just like to make sure that I am making the right move.

Gentlemen,

I am about to pull the trigger on a Pentax AF-540 FGZ shoe mount flash for my K-5 but I am a bit hesitant based on some of the reviews. I have looked at the Metz and some of the far less expensive options but some of the features on the Pentax look very good. The Pentax and the Metz are about the same price today. Some questions that come to mind are:
1. Has Pentax corrected any of the build quality problems?
2. Are the build quality problems overblown?
3. Are there any newer Pentax flash products in the pipeline?
4. Where is the best place to purchase this unit?
5. Does B&H or others offer a discount to members here?

B&H has a descent price and I have noticed that the price has dropped in the last few months so that makes me wonder if a newer unit is in the offing.

Thank you in advance for your usual great advise.

Regards,

Thank you all for your comments. You have confirmed my instincts. I have always been leery of the so called "too good to be true"deals and your helpful links are proof that this is a scam artist. I can get in enough trouble by accident without going out of my way to find it! I will stick to my usual vendors that we all know and trust. Thanks again for the good information.

Best regards,

Doug

Good afternoon,

In preparation for some upcoming trips, I have been looking for some lenses on the web since none of my local camera vendors carry Pentax. I came across a vendor by the name of "Lens Clearance." I am a bit leery to purchase expensive lenses from a vendor that I have no information on or even hear of for that matter. The prices were good so it is tempting but I have always been cautious about this type of thing. Have any of you had any experience with this vendor? I would appreciate any information or comments from you.

Best regards,

Doug

Thank you all for your input. Unfortunately I missed out on the lens at B&H. It would appear that our friends here snapped them all up before I could react. :o I am glad that they found good homes.

I was interested to see that someone raised the possibility of a WR version of this lens. That would be of interest to me. Is there any solid information on this.

Regards,

Doug

I am considering purchasing the 12-24 wide angle lens for my K-5 prior to our trip to Alaska this summer. I am aware that they are out of stock at most of our vendors because of the tragedy in Japan last year. Do any of you have any information on when these lenses may be available? If there are posts addressing this situation, I would be appreciate it if you would direct me to them.

Best regards,

Doug

Kenko Teleplus question

Gentlemen,

My question concerns the Kenko 2X KAX Teleplus MC4 lens doubler. It is supposed to be auto focus but it may not work in that mode on all bodies. Specifically, I am wondering if it would work with the K-5 or the SF1.

Thank you for your help.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your thoughts. I like to be cautious and make purchases with as much information as possible but try not to be too smart by half. Market timing is always tricky. In any event, I very much appreciate your input and I will be in the hunt for the best deal.

I agree with the thoughts on the UV filters. I do use them mostly for protection but have found that using a good quality one can be useful in some circumstances. I have a sigma DG on my 18-55 DA lens and find it to be of very good quality.

Best regards,

Doug

Lens price trends

Gentlemen,

I am enjoying my new K-5 and have decided that I would like to add one or two lenses. I have used some of my older Pentax SMC lenses from my SF1 with nice results but I would like to add some reach beyond what I have and a wide angle would be nice as well.

The two lenses I am considering are the DA 12-24 and the DA 55-300. When I price these, along with a descent UV filter I am close to $1200. I was wondering if these prices are stable or should they start to trend one way or another in the future. I have read that the tragedy in Japan has had an impact on both availability and, by extension, price. Is this likely to hold over the near future? Any suggestions on vendors with the best pricing would be helpful as well. I have seen some vendors offer lenses in what they call "kit boxes" or "white boxes" at reduced prices and wonder if they are legitimate.

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

Best regards,

Doug

Vendor question

Having been away from SLR photography for a while, I am reacquainting myself with the Who's who of Pentax vendors. I am familiar with B&H, J&R and a few others but a friend mentioned a vendor by the name of Big Value Inc. who apparently has very good deals and is an Amazon vendor as well. I have never heard of them. Have any of you had any experience with them?

All of the camera stores in my area no longer carry Pentax and indicate that Pentax is going out of business any day now. Obviously I will not be giving them my business.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Doug

Thank you all for your input. I think that I will try all the lenses on the k5 at some time just to experiment. Yes, I do miss my F100-300 lens. It was a great lens that I enjoyed using with good results. Good advice on testing a new lens immediately. It has been quite a while since I have used some of the m42 lenses. I hope that I can find the instructions on the Vivitar wide angle.

I have heard that some of the older glass was of very good quality.

Hi fellow Pentaxians,

While I am not new to Pentax or SLR photography, I have been away from the hobby for some time having been lured away by the convenience of point and shoots.

My Pentax beginnings go back to my Honeywell Spotmatic which I still have as well as my SF1 and new K-5.

I have a number of lenses from my older Pentax cameras and I am curious about their use with my new K5. I do have a Pentax m42 to K type mount adaptor.

The m-42 lenses are as follows:
Super -Takumar 1:1.4/50mm serial 1344020
Soligor Wide-Auto1:2.8 35mm serial 681978 (German distributor?)
Auto Spira-tel 1:2.8 135mm serial 196641E (Spiratone-NY distributor?)
Vivitar Wide-Angle 24mm1:2.8 serial 3704748 auto
Vivitar 85-205 1:3.8 serial 22013235 auto

The F type lenses are as follows:
Pentax smc-f 1:1.4 50mm serial 1026040
Pentax smc-f zoom 1:3.5-4.5 28-80 serial 1263283
Pentax smc-f zoom 1:4-5.6 70-210 serial 1269984

I am unable to find my f 100-300 zoom and f wide angle.

I have a DA 18-55mm zoom f/3.5-5.6 serial5278229

I am considering the DA 55-300mm zoom as my next lens purchase.

Any help and or candid comments concerning the above lenses would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to be frank.

Thank you very much,

Doug

F lenses use on K-5

I am new to both this forum and DSLR photography. However I am not new to photography or Pentax. My first Pentax was the spotmatic which I still have as well as quite a few lenses and other equipment. I upgraded to a SF1 and have a number of lenses for that as well. I very much enjoyed that camera but was lured away to digital point and shoots for ease and convenience. I just received my K-5 with kit lens a few days ago and have spent quite a bit of time with the owners manual. My head hurts, but has not exploded yet. I will have to reengage with real photography.

My first question is this, can I successfully use some of my Pentax SMC F lenses with my K-5? They range from a 50mm f1.4 to several zooms. I know that they will fit but will they produce good results?

Has any one ever used the older spotmatic lenses with an adaptor on the DSLRS? I have a number of good lenses for that old friend.

Perhaps there is a thread covering this topic to which someone can direct me.

Thanks for your help, I am looking forward to getting back into the type of photography as a thinking hobbyist rather than just a point and shooter. I am not disparaging point and shoot, I have had some very good results with my Sony cameras.

Hi folks, this is my first post on the site so forgive me if I prattle on a bit. I have been photography hobbyist for many years. My first camera was a Brownie, so that gives you some idea of just how many years. I quickly graduated to many other cameras until I settled on an Argus C-3 for quite a few years and after a few more cameras settled on a Pentax spotmatic. I used this camera for many years and acquired a number of lenses, flashes and other pieces of equipment that I still own. I then purchased an SF1 with a AF 400FTZ flash. I still have this camera along with the following Pentax SMC F lenses: 50mm 1.4, 28-80 zoom, 70-210 zoom. I loaned two lenses to a "friend" that I never got back, they were also Pentax SMC lenses and were 24mm 2.8 wide angle and a 30-70 zoom. I also have some of the Pentax point and soot cameras such as the zoom 105 super.

I abandoned my SLR photography for several Sony point and shoot digital cameras for convenience. I decided to get back into SLR photography and ordered a K-5 with the kit lens and hope to receive it this week.

One question that I have is whether I will have good results with any of the above lenses with the K-5. Any help on that front will be greatly appreciated.

I enjoyed the two lenses that got away and wonder if it is possible to replace them by buying them used and if so where is a good place to look. I suppose eBay is one source but I might be leery about quality.

I will be looking for a flash for this camera in the not too distant future so help on that subject would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all,

Doug
