Shooting Comet NEOWISE

I had big plans for a shot of NEOWISE. I'd always wanted to shoot this barn behind a small pond, when I would go by in the morning bike rides the barn was always reflecting in the pond. I rode past the house one day and thought, dummy, go back and ask if you can take some shots in the morning. So I ask and they were very kind and let me walk around their property at 4:00 in the morning, also gave em permission to come back anytime I wanted. I packed my gear and drove to the site about 3:30 in the morning. I was thinking the comet would be visible above the pond and maybe the barn, I sat and waited, no comet, watched and waited, no comet. Turns out it was rising behind the tallest tree. I got some pictures but not what I had envisioned. There wasn't enough light on the barn and pond to cast a reflection and by the time there was I couldn't see the comet any more. Anyway, I took some pictures, I even stitched the scene in 4 images but it's just so so.

Not comet related but I was able to watch bats hunting in the early morning light and later hummingbirds on their feeders, lots of hummingbirds

This is one of my shots from that morning shoot.

Nice shot, My first attempt I had clouds cover the comet after 15 minutes of watching and shooting. I hope to get out in the morning and try again. None of my shots were even worth keeping due to the haze and clouds.

@Class A - I downloaded the new version this evening, there is still a shadow on the cloned areas when a luma mask is used. I've responded to C1 as well. This was my first test, need to look at the remainder of the fixes. I imagine they will get it sorted out, the original workaround you gave me still works just extra work.

I had an unauthorized purchase on my paypal account, they were pretty quick with the refund but i still had to pay a transaction fee. I thought that was unfair at the time.

@Class A, Thank you for the info, I too had tried reordering the masks but had not recalculated the luma mask. This works for now, hopefully they will place more importance on it since David had the problem as well.

Pointer device?

Just an update, the mouse (logitech G604) came the other day. I guess I've never had a nice mouse in my life. This is so smooth, just running it on the surface of my desk, no mouse pad. Feels nice, adjustable sensitivity, mean you can move across the screen really quickly with little movement then change it to move much less for critical work. Buttons on the side for the thumb to press for shortcuts. I've figured out a few for Capture One. My simplistic playing around has a button to start the program, a button for the "ALT" key and my own shortcut for full screen browser. I'm sure there are other things I can control but just learning the basics. For now I'm pretty happy with the choice, but in fairness any of the options above would have been a 1000% improvement to what I had before. Also, being wireless (bluetooth), it frees up one of my USB ports so I don't have to unplug the printer to add something else.

Thanks again

Thanks for the opinions, I think I'll go with a Logitech mouse as this PC is used by everyone in the family. I wouldn't mind using a track ball again, maybe when I get my own system. I'm thinking the Logitech G604, long battery life and mostly good reviews.

Best buy has it for $30 off and free 2 day shipping.

I've been looking at both a track ball and a gaming mouse. Both Logitech, I've used Logitech for years, I bet the one that failed was 20 years old. I had a track ball at work and liked it just fine but wandered about the gaming mouse if It offered any advantages.

My old mouse died a couple weeks ago, I had another that I wasn’t fond of that I started using. My question is what are you currently using as a pointer on your digital processing machine and are you happy with it? It’s time for a new mouse.

I have a case with them about this, I sent the first images when I opened the case. I sent this image to them yesterday explaining the issue. If you would like to report the bug, please go ahead. Maybe if there are more reports it will gain traction.

Thanks for looking at this, at lest I am not crazy.

Here's the image, it's nothing special I was just working with the clone and heal tools. the power polls on the top of the hill are what I am taking out. if you look to the left of the tree you can see a shadow and also to the right of the road you can see a shadow. I didn't take the rest out so you could see what I was getting rid of. the funny thing is, I mistakenly opened the JPG version of this file and I did not have this problem. created the luma mask followed by the heal mask and no shadows on the JPG image. I just happened to shoot Raw+ on that trip.

I did try rasterizing the mask as well but that made no difference.

Thanks for trying, generally the problem appears when healing a dark item over a light background or a light item over a dark background. The image I have been experimenting on is dark storm clouds with light power poles in the foreground. They heal out perfectly when there in no luma mask active. It just occurred to me to try rasterizing that mask and see what happens. It’s just a pain, I’ll post a picture when on my pc later.

Another from last year, we took a quick trip to Florida in September. Bargain price due to pool being closed (who needs a pool when you have the Gulf of Mexico at your door). Anyway, almost missed this cormorant as we were watching dolphins swimming in the bay.

Nice capture

There some scary stuff out there, a good way to waste an hour or three is use google street view in different countries. What you'd consider outrageous is really the norm in some places.

Class A, Thanks for the tip, however it didn't fix the issue. So far the only way I can not have the ghosting is to make sure the heal layer(s) go down first. This isn't a huge deal but it is a pain when you notice something you'd like to fix after adding and adjusting a luma mask.

I am pretty new to this stuff, just messing around a little here and there trying to learn. What I did to try your suggestion was create a luma layer mask (first mask), basically just raising the shadows a little and pushing the black down to keep the blacks dark. Then I created a heal layer, just getting rid of some power poles on the crest of a hill, I get a shadow where the poles were. Then I adjusted the shadow slider in the HDR tool, FWIW taking back to zero gets rid of the shadow. I then put the shadow slider back to almost where it was, no difference in the ghosting. I then changed the parameter of the mask it self, adjusting the luminosity range. I still got the ghosting,

Can you try a luma layer mask and heal layer to see if you have the same result. Luma first then a heal layer? For what its worth I'm running Windows 10 for better or worse.

I still haven't heard from C1 on my support case but I'll bet they are pretty busy right now,

Thanks

Tim

New mouse solved the moving the selected heal point. I no longer have a problem moving the selection around. Something I did notice today, going back to the luminosity masks and the heal mask. It looks like it was my "shadow:" luma mask that causes the ghosting. When I move the opacity slider to zero the ghosting goes away on the shadow mask, it makes no difference on the highlight mask (on this image).

Just seems odd my mouse went bad on the upgrade, likely it was bad before but the new tool is more sensitive to "chatter" from the mouse.

Thanks for listening as I blunder thru this new tool.

This evening I tested my mouse against the touch pad on my laptop. The touch pad works as it should, I guess my mouse is going bad. Also, did you know you can lock the source point for a heal and use that point for multiple corrections? Just click on the source point and turn that circle outline orange, then the auto selection is disabled. Not that this works for much but i found that out tonight.

I'll get a new mouse and see if that solves the problem of dropping the source point while trying to move it. I didn't have that problem with the last version so maybe this is more sensitive to variation with my mouse.

I just tested the press enter to name the layer whit layer created by using the brush. That didn't work. I selected the heal brush, started to draw a mask on the background (no other layers present) and CO created a heal layer, After that I pressed enter but it did not open up the name of the layer to edit it. Still have to click on the layer to name it. What I was doing before was right clicking on the + to add a layer then naming it before actually doing any masking. I'm certainly no expert and can use any tips to improve my editing abilities. For what its worth the brushes do automatically create a layer of the intended type. However, it only auto creates one instance of each layer type automatically. So the heal layer I created first, then an adjustment layer, then I switched back to the heal brush and it switched back to the first heal layer, then the adjustment brush went back to the previously created adjustment layer. Creating a radial or linear radiant mask automatically takes you to the original adjustment layer. If there are more than one heal, clone, or adjustment layer created then its a matter of selecting the layer you want to adjust.I don't know if this is helpful to anyone, just putting my findings here.

Oh, no if you click on a layer, you still have to choose the correct brush. So, if I'm in a clone layer and choose the adjustment brush, it switched to the adjustment layer automatically, funny thing is it switched to adjustment layer 2. Testing this out, looks like it moves to the last created layer for the type brush you selected.

A quick test between grand-kids this afternoon, it looks like if the heal is done first it works as expected. I created a heal layer (same photo as earlier but not one posted above) healed some telephone poles out and it worked fine, I added highlight and shadow luma layers then another heal layer and the problem returned on the top heal layer, The heal layer on the bottom worked as expected.

There are 3 layer types, clone, heal, and adjust. Then you select the brush to go with it. However, if you select the clone or heal brush it will create the correct layer, but then as Class a said, you have to name the layer after the fact.

I believe this is stated correctly as I’m not at my pc this morning.
