Your latest acquisition

After the Super Takumar 1.4/50mm 8-elements, after the Trioplan 2.8/100mm aluminium and the Primoplan 1.9/58mm (both awaiting CLA)... I found another vintage lens I wanted to try, but I always ended up losing all the auctions :(
It's the ISCO Westromat 1.9/50mm. It will come fitted on a reflex Edixa D-L.
It will reach its 2.8/35mm cousin with the same name.
I would have been happier with a previous model, either zebra or aluminium (f/1.9 0r f/2 version). The late black barrel versions (with rubber rings) are not as well built as the previous ones, but probably the coating is a tad better (albeit single-coated).
I suspect that the two Westromats (1.9/50 and 2.8/35) have the same optics of the highly regarded Schneider Xenon and Curtagon, but I have no way to check myself.
I'd be interested in other opinions

cheers

Paolo

Which transmission? And what possible reason would a dealer have for refusing to honor a warranty after 800 miles?

Here's a thought Tony. Your Honda is only just run in. It will probably do another 200,000 miles. Get an AAA membership (take the Premium option) and enjoy your trip.

Aperture block repair reliability

Yes, mirror problems. The camera was an early production K-50 and started having symptoms about a year after purchase. The symptom was that the viewfinder image was consistently blurred (mirror not fully homed to down position). IIRC, the first flurry of aperture controller failure had similar presentation and that is how I recognized the problem on my friend's camera.

That same solenoid coordinates the mirror travel and timing.

Knowing the internet, every other place he finds will have the same or worse issues. If you have questions about using a Pentax camera PF is the best place.

(DPR has their own challenges with negativity and brand tribalism. Someone called rice has a Pentax blog; avoid it. Some smaller camera forums are okay but Pentax has too small of a marketshare to be discussed. Maybe there are good Japanese forums but most of us don't know their language.)

That makes the Rovos Rail trip between Cape Town and Pretoria sound like a bargain! About $4000 for two days in the Roal Suite. Cheap!

Meals included, of course.

DFA*50 1.4 coming

I feel that way about "24". They use every cheap trick in the book, the timeline provided doesn't make any sense. They use impossible to believe plot twists. People run around seconds after receiving critical injuries. But sometimes I have to watch. Right now, half way through the current season, it's just too dumb to watch, but I'm sure I'll go back to it once the build up of "this is way too incredibly stupid" wears off a bit.

Its the opposite of a show that's good to binge watch. You need a week to forget how stupid the last episode was. :D

Maybe that's why I come to this thread once a week. :D

It is sort of like watching a really bad horror movie. It is so bad you really should walk away and do something productive but you keep getting sucked back in to watch a little more.

Looks like the K-1II is Official

I don't think it is quite that way. First of all, this isn't a specs monster like the A9 or D5. It is a tweak of an existing camera that is already pretty nice -- I'm sure they hope a small investment will give at least moderate return with regard to new camera sales in the end.

The glass is definitely coming -- there is a road map with lenses on it. The question is how quickly other primes follow the DFA 50's release. Hopefully faster now that they've figured out the drive mechanism, which apparently was the hold up. At the same time, there are nice lenses available now -- FA limiteds, DFA zooms, 100 macro, 200/300 primes. I, personally don't quite feel high and dry or in the dark.

Not sweating, but it feels like a little part of me dies every time I trudge through the News and Rumour threads... I can understand excitement over potential product releases, and even some degree of disappointment if they take a long time or don't meet expectations, but the level of negativity, nay-saying and complaining is simply ludicrous at times :hmm: Heaven forbid we should crack on and enjoy our hobby...

K-1 mark II imminent

Strange that in the K-1II thread most of the posts seem to be whining about a mythical APS-C body. Granted there is not much K-1 II stuff to discuss. And any attempt by anyone to be happy about a K-1II is promptly squashed. But still, would it not be better for those that want to discuss the mythical k-3III start a "Why we want to buy a K-3III instead of a K-1II." thread?

Lots of posts here about Pentax (actually Ricoh not Pentax) failing to communicate. Yet, in the past they have announced (or even just mentioned) things that for some reason got delayed or never materialized. If you think the complaints over no communication are bad you should review the complaints caused by announcements of products that are delayed.

I honestly am not sure what folks are asking for here. Do Nikon or Canon publish a road map showing what and when they are releasing things over the next 24 months? If so can someone please point me to that, I'm curious about it.
