K1ii RAW not read by Mac

Is it K1-II PEF files that arenot being read? If so converting them to DNG might work (and if so switch to recording DNG in camera). There is an adobe converter here, both win and mac versions which says it supports the K1-II:

But I don't get why there is so much grain/noise in the first place, on what looks a nice sunny day. They look like ISO3200 or higher.

Prepairing images for drugstore-printing: howto?

My "howto" would be:
1. crop the images to the aspect ratio of the final print
2. calibrate your monitor if you can - at least google for settings online for your exact monitor. At absolute minimum make sure your monitor is not at 100% brightness - if it is you'll almost certainly get dark prints.
3. do a test run to see if you need to alter saturation or brightness or colour balance so the print better matches what you saw on your screen. For example my local BigW (like a Target in US) prints were OK for saturation and colour but slightly on the dark side (see point 2 ;)). On the other hand a photobook I had printed was a bit under-saturated but OK otherwise.
4. Do a virus scan on your USB drive as soon as you get home!

K3 - sucessive exposures - white balance/exposure changes

Must say I've never noticed anything like this, with either my K3 or my old Kr. I mainly leave the camera in AWB and it certainly can get fooled at times, but with constant scene and lighting I get pretty consistent results. As a recent example I was photographing powerpoint slides at a talk (used jpeg). They all have a greenish caste but the same WB correction in lightroom served to correct them all.

sports tracking wide open?

There was a good thread on this last year, which I see you posted in too so probably you remember it?
There is a sequence of a basketball player running towards the camera at f2.8 on the first page. Also awaldram gives a nice explanation that AF-C tracking relies on distinguishing the subject (keep in focus) from the out of focus background so tracking should work best with small f numbers.

Excellent THANK YOU!!
Both my DA15 limited and Sigma 17-70 always came up as "none" so this is now fixed. On the other hand my two DA-L lenses (35 and 55-300) have always been correctly identified somehow (??).

Can you tell me how you permanently associated the lens profile in Lightroom? My Sigma 17-70 always comes up as a pentax lens for some reason; my DA 15 limited also gets the wrong profile by default. Hadn't realised you can override this permanently, would be great!

I had a pretty ugly dust particle on my focus screen. Just held the camera facing down and blew with a rocket blower and the dust was gone. That would definitely be my first option

The 18-135 is not a "give away" kit lens, it sells for $450 US on its own, so I'd expect this kit to not get too much cheaper. I think CDN$1150 for that kit is pretty good already - B&H have it for $US990 which is significantly more.

On question 4, I would definitely recommend updating Lightroom. I find the new features really useful; in particular the revamped basic panel which came with V4 is MUCH better than V3.

Agree here too - if you don't use PS regularly the one time LR license is a better deal. And you can get the de-haze control if you want - instructions here:

My impression of both merge tools in LR6 (HDR and panorama) is they have limited controls but work well. I'm especially impressed with the pano tool; I took a 3 shot panorama off the back of a ferry the other week, so with moving wake/waves, and I cant find any obvious stitching faults.

Not many customisations for me either. Have assigned RAW/Fx button to toggle shake reduction, set the front dial to EV compensation in Av and Tv modes, and set up a couple of the user modes to different high speed AFC conditions. Oh, also set the quick zoom to 100% on image playback.

Other than that, there is a good discussion of settings in the in depth review, especially here Pentax K-3 Review - Recommended Settings | Reviews

Interesting - it does sound like you are getting better PDAF performance than described in the in depth review which said: "But it was never accurate. And by never, we mean that not once in the entire combination of five camera bodies and two lenses and two USB docks did we get a single in-focus shot unless we switched to Live View." Although probably your preference for Live View is linked to the same issue?

Great shots by the way!

need to "wake up" auto focus

I know what you mean and have noticed the same thing. There is some very useful information on the K3 AF-c behavior in this thread, definitely worth a read:

My thoughts are that if the AF system does not need to adjust focus for a set time then it does seem to "go to sleep" and you have to reactivate it with the shutter or back button. According to the thread I linked the AF-C system works from comparing in and out of focus areas so depth of field may be a key issue. I do seem to notice this - not conclusive, but I seem to find the AF system generally more responsive using my 55-300 at the long end. The red in focus dots in the viewfinder sparkle as the camera tracks focus.

Aligning exposure bracketed shots questions

I don't often use bracketing, but tried it with lightroom 6 for the first time yesterday. It was a pretty static subject, just some plant leaves moving in the breeze, so LR had no trouble, although I shot hand held so would have been slight framing variation. I do like the features however - it has several levels of ghost removal plus a mode that will highlight ghost areas in red.
