Very interesting lens, this one. I wasn't aware of its existence. Fairly rare, by the looks of it. And quite the bokeh monster. I found this picture taken with one. GLWS!

I picked up a Vivitar Series 1 28mm f/1.9 from a forum member this week, and I'm happy to say this Tokina-made lens is way, way better than the Kiron 28/2 I had at one point, at least to my eyes.

Here are a couple images I made yesterday and edited today, the lens wide open at f/1.9. The first shot was at ISO 3200, while the second was at ISO 800. I underexposed both shots (not on purpose), so they're both a little noisier than I'd like. I made some adjustments in LR, of course, setting the sharpening at 81/1.8, my usual settings these days.

I think the lens is pretty sharp even wide open, though it's definitely sharper at f/2.8 and up. But the bokeh seems smooth and pleasing to me, especially in the second shot with the green bottle. . . .

Running K-50 firmware on K-30

Hi there,

I have adapted the latest K-50 firmware version 1.10 to work in K-30 cameras. The initial testing is complete, all test cameras work fine.

The following functionality from K-50 is available in K-30 after updating:
  • 51200 ISO.

  • Eye-Fi card support.

  • Aperture control in 55-300 PLM lens.

  • Ability to change the picture filename prefix.

Several users of this update have also reported the AF improvement.

The firmware version 1.10 for K-30 can be downloaded here.

Some very important things to understand before installing this version.
Please read the following carefully:
  1. This is firmware 1.10 for K-50 modified in a way that it can be installed in K-30 cameras. It will turn your K-30 into K-50, and the EXIF in your photos will reflect this change.
If you want your camera to be identified as "K-30" in EXIF information and during PC connection, here is a camera name preserving version.

  2. This is not an official update, and when you install it you'll automatically void your camera warranty (if you still have one ).

  3. This update should still be considered experimental. Flashing it can possibly be harmful to your camera (like any other firmware update, in fact).

  4. During the installation all the camera settings will be reset to factory defaults. If some of them are important for you, please remember their values so you can restore them after the update.

  5. Reverting to the original K-30 firmwares is possible. You'll just need to download and install the official firmware from the update page. But a repeated "upgrading" to K-50 firmware would no longer be safe and most likely will lead to camera hangups - this can be fixed by cleaning the settings via debug menu. I'm ready to give the instructions in case anyone needs them.

  6. Please refer to "Preparation of update" and "Updating Procedure" section on the K-30 update page for the firmware installation instructions.

  7. One of the tester reported random shutter actuations when 55-300 PLM lens was mounted on K-30. We need more testers to find out the reasons of this misbehavior.

If you are still here, I welcome you to the club

Funny how people (who are aware of the difference between) will pay more for the m42 S-M-C Takumar Version 2 (6 elements, 6 groups) version of this lens (previously they were 5 elements in 4 groups). But they are apparently unaware that this lens is simply that great optical formula with the convenience of a K-mount. It is a great lens.

Beautiful lens... I finally was able to give mine a good test run this weekend. As sharp as you'd ever want it to be at f/2.5 for portraits.

I shoot a plain-jane K-5 with this flash and Takumar lenses, and at least at close range in simple lighting situations, the inbuilt thyristor sensor is the best help. Not quite as good as TTL, but close, and the bounce function is incredibly useful.

Within the range of the flash, this is a great combination. An ideal package for a starting DSLR photographer who wants a good camera lightly used with all the important bits in hand. Add a tripod and an SD card, and you are good to go.

If anyone wasn't aware, the 12-24 works great on FF from 18-24mm.

Love my copy of the Vivitar S1 Macro, though it's a heavy beast! Interested buyers can have a look at my published shots with it. Free bump & good luck with the sale!

Totally endorse this comment and the lens - purchased one of these for my PJ work as my personal photography doesn't tend to go this long. For work the lens works really well and is light and easily transported and has the long reach that the DA50-200 couldn't give me. Well worth the cost!

Wonderful lens... Like you I got mine with the MZ-S when they first came out... While mechanically it's a bit plasticky, optically it's great.

Good luck with the sale!

I had this and sold it because I am trying to concentrate on a smaller set of very good lenses, but this is a very good, light, long zoom and I was very pleased with the photos I got with it.

A nice light inexpensive two lens kit could be this and the F35-70. I think someone will be a happy buyer with this one.

I have this lens and it's amazing. I actually use it on my Pentax K01 as a "35mm equivalent". It suffers from flare but otherwise a fantastic lens.

This 100-300mm Pentax lens should be mandatory for anyone who is thinking in getting a big gun. It is so good, it was my tele objective for more than five years, I took great pics with it before moving into the 300/2.8, and finally setting on the 300/4.
