DA 18-135 WR, Show us what it can do

This sundown shot was taken with the K-3 and the 18-135 at Christmastime from a hill overlooking the Rio Grande river valley in Las Cruces, NM. It's actually a crop from a larger, wider picture so as to appropriately place the mountain at the left.

I took this shot with the K-3 and the 18-135 just after sundown on Christmas day. We were visiting my daughter and her family in Las Cruces, NM.

Seasonal lights at the Phoenix zoo

Taken at night across a lake at the Phoenix AZ zoo. Each Christmas season, a dazzling display of lights is provided. This picture was taken hand-held; the K-5 was selected for its excellent low-light performance. The ISO selection was 3200.

During the Christmas season, the Phoenix AZ Zoo lights up its area with beautiful lights that are best seen at night. This shot was taken handheld, helped by the camera's shake reduction feature. I used the K-5 for its ability to take photos in dim light; this one was at 3200 ASA. The lights were on the other side of a lake at the zoo, the level horizon assured by the camera's assistance information in the viewfinder. I thought it was a very interesting and beautiful scene.

I have had a real issue with PPG lately - I cannot upload a photo. I go through the routine, and then the screen goes blank white. When I re-access the site, my photo data is there, but NOT the photo. I then delete the pointless data. This has been going on for 3 weeks now. I sent a note of concern to the site's keepers, but no response. Has this happened to anyone else??? Color me disgusted.

Since she was a stray, we have no idea as to her parentage. She has the long body and short legs of a Dachshund, but the face of a terrier of some sort. I suspect some of both!

Our superdog, Joe, passed away from cancer this May. We were truly in mourning, reluctant to get another dog. Well, Corey happened to us last week, and I thought I'd share this photo taken with the 18-135 - natural light. She's a little jewel!

This is a pic of my recently-deceased superdog, Joe. He was then basking in some sunshine on our back patio. He was a wonderful dog - loving, caring, and supportive in every way. I miss him greatly - he had cancer, and we finally had to put him to sleep about a month and a half ago. It was gut-wrenching.

K-3, 35mm Macro Ltd, f/2.8, 1/8000, ISO 320. This fine lens did a great job again.

This is a pic of my recently deceased super-dog, Joe, basking in the sunshine on our back porch. K-3, SMC-DA 35mm Macro Ltd, f/2.8, 1/8000, ISO 320. Joe was a beautiful, loving, caring and supportive dog who always did what he was asked. He was suffering from cancer, and about a month and a half ago, we had to put him down to stop his pain and ours. We are still missing him a lot. This is one of my favorite pictures of him, and the lens, as usual, did a great job.

Well, good news! Yesterday I contacted Adam, and he said he would e-mail Pentax to see what gives. Lo and behold, the PPG site is back online again today! However, they still have not acted on pending submissions for months - very frustrating. It would be nice if Pentax paid better attention.

I'm rather proud of the images I have up on the Pentax Photo Gallery, and had my specific web address there on my business cards (as below). I have noticed that I have had images up for approval for a very long time with no posting. I recall something similar happened not long ago because somebody at Pentax did not renew something or other, and then it got back up again. Is there any chance the moderators here can contact Pentax and find out what is going on?

One of the things I really like about this lens is that it gives very creative distortion when you get up really close to something. As an example, I shot this 1951 Studebaker Commander some years ago with it, and I enjoyed the result. You already know about the starburst capability, I suspect. You hardly need to focus it at all for most shots, just set it at the hyperfocus point and fire away. There will be some purple fringing at the edges of photos where there is high contrast, but that is a minor annoyance, solvable in post.

As a writer-photographer for firearms publications, I find it handy for photographing longer subjects where my photo distance is limited by a tripod, and it gives sharp and practically distortion-free results, as you can see here.

I think you will really enjoy your new toy - I love mine.

Rayallen - very nice shots that demonstrate the amazing versatility of the 18-135WR. Mine is semi-permanently attached to my K3, ready to go for virtually any target of opportunity.

Weathered

In the now defunct old copper mining town of Bisbee, Arizona, I encountered this elderly gentleman on the covered outer porch of the century-old Copper Queen hotel. He was in the process of drinking a cup of black coffee and rolling his own cigarette. He had such a classic face that showed years of life experience. I asked him if he would mind if I took a quick picture of him. He consented. Yes, he looks weathered, but I suspect he earned that in the school of hard knocks. I have kept this image for a long time - it haunts me as I wonder about his personal history.

This is a shot of artwork made from bed springs, assorted bottles and stained glass shards by a New Mexican woman who is about 80 years old. I thought it was quite innovative. Taken with the K-3 and the 18-135 WR.

This is a shot of the rugged Organ Mountains, near Las Cruces, New Mexico. My maternal grandfather once prospected these mountains around the turn of the 20th Century. I took the picture shortly after dawn to emphasize the mountains' shadows.

Is the Pentax K5 still a good option ?

While I own a K-3 and love it, I still kept my K-5 for its low-light resolution. I get good results up to ISO 3200. Recently, we took a trip to the Phoenix Zoo at night to view their "Zoo lights" Christmastime celebration. Instead of the K-3, I opted for the K-5, and just kept the kit lens 18-55 WR on it. Here is a sample shot of some of the light displays as viewed across a lake on the zoo premises. I used the level feature to be sure of the camera's orientation, as there was no horizon to reckon the view. This is still a great camera, and I value it as a backup to the K-3 and for even better performance in low light, particularly when shooting in RAW, as this picture was. Shot hand-held.

The contrast of this beautiful flower in the midst of a tangle of rough foliage struck me as a fit subject to capture with the superb 100mm macro. I used the TAV setting on the K-3 to get both the ideal depth of field I wanted and the control of any camera movement, as this was hand-held.
