Spot meter on the part of the scene you want exposed correctly, press the AE-L button to lock the exposure settings, Focus and recompose.

My opinion as to why people like the picture but you think it isn't great: It's better to have an average quality picture of a great subject than a technically great picture of an average subject. Crop a bit off the top and bottom and use it for social media!

What kind of adapter is this ...

Have fun but do be careful, and don't force parts together. The thread diameter is the same as an M42 lens thread but the thread pitch is different.

T-mount adapter. Also used for some spotting scope adapters, some extension tubes, and lens mount adapters (such as Spiratone, Bushnell, and Lentar brands)

K5 Extended ISO

I have been using a K-5 for years. I haven't found any drawbacks to extended iso range. I personally find the images useable up to iso 5000 so go ahead and try it. Most likely you will never turn off extended iso. I use iso 80 more frequently than the highest values but the top iso settings are useful for adjusting composition when doing night time photography.

I took one exposure of the scene. I took many separate exposures of the moon adjusting the camera settings as needed. I needed a long lens to get a large enough moon to place on the background. The moon was much too small with a lens wide enough to capture a foreground. Practice moon shots now with your 400mm lens so you are setup before the eclipse starts. Each moon picture I took was a separate exposure without the background, I had to frequently adjust the camera position as the moon travels very fast.

My experience shooting an eclipse was 1)work on the night scene without the moon and use that as the background 2)use a long lens for the moon photos and adjust exposure as needed, it gets very dim at full eclipse. Take plenty of pictures and arrange them later. I manually set daylight white balance and used raw+.

The picture appears very low contrast and washed out in color on my screen. I would increase the contrast. When possible I prefer this type of picture taken from a lower viewpoint (you might get wet).

I really like the pictures and lighting balance. I however prefer more of the subject in focus so recommend stopping down the aperture. It seems you are finding a style that suits you well.

You have a good idea here. Your model seems to be leaning backwards so try a variety of poses and camera angles. If possible go back and work this scene, I really think it has the potential to be an exceptional image.
