Pentax Q Adapter aperture stuck closed.

It threw me because when I would disconnect the Pentax Q Zoom and then attached the adapter the shutter blades would pop open and you could see through the K-mount lens you had attached to the adapter. It would fire the shutter the first time but then would not reopen the shutter.

When I tested it at home everything worked as I expected but I didn't realize at the time that the shutter had failed to reopen.

Again, when I got into the field, I removed the litte Q Zoom, attached the adapter and the 400/5.6. Everything looked fine and I focused on some Elk across the canyon and fired a shot. Everything was great until I got set to take another picture and the shutter was completely closed. I could not see a thing because everything was black as if I still had a lens cap in place. I never sorted out the problem in the field but it turned out there was no actual hunting picture to take so nothing lost.

I guess it goes to show that familiarity with the equipment is critical or you will not be successful. I thought I knew what I was doing but had overlooked the fact that the year before my shots were taken with a different camera.

Pentax Q Adapter aperture stuck closed.

Ok. I think I have finally sorted this out. Before I go further here I have to thank my wife.

I was walking around the house complaining that my camera wasn't working and she asked me what the problem was. I told her that my Q adapter wasn't working right even though everything had worked perfectly the year before. She looked at me kind of funny and said..."you couldn't have used it the year before because your granddaughter. was using it for a school project!"

Suddenly it dawned on me. My wife was right. I had used the Q last year, not the Q7. Suddenly I realized that there was a good chance that the firmware had not been updated to work with the Q adapter. Sure enough. When I checked the firmware on the Q7 was still version 1.0.

So...to make a long, painful story short. I downloaded the update, updated the camera and suddenly everything worked as I expected.

I hate to admit that I am an idiot sometimes but, there is no way around it. I am an idiot sometimes.

Problem solved. With the updated firmware the shutter blades (not aperture blades) fire and then reopen again as they should.

Thank you VonBaloney for putting up with my confusing post and helping me out anyway.

Ok. You are right. I just attached the adapter and the shutter opened. I attached the lens, took the picture, and now the shutter is closed again. By staying closed I cannot focus through live view. Hmm. I am confused but at least I figured out how to make it work again.

Again, this problem is new for me. I've used this adapter a number of times in the past and this has not happened. There must be some setting on the camera that has changed. I guess I'll have to find it.

BTW, thank you for your assistance.

Pentax Q Adapter aperture stuck closed.

I do have a simple Fotodiox adapter that allows me to use my Minolta MD lenses so I still have options but the longest Minolta lens I have is 300mm and I would prefer to use my Pentax 400mm. I am photographing archery deer and elk hunting from a fair distance so it is helpful to use as long a lens as I can.

I have a Fotodiox K mount to Q mount adapter on the way so if it arrives in time I should be ok.

Obviously I would rather use the Pentax adapter and it is frustrating that it is out of order. I don't need the adapter's aperture for what I am doing so I am tempted to try and open things up and open the aperture manually if I can.

Good question but I have tried it with other Pentax lens attached (FA 200mm) (DA 18-135mm) and nothing changes. Even with the adapter not attached to any lens, the aperture control on the adapter itself should open and close when the ring on the adapter is rotated. It is just a simple manual adjustment intended primarily to be used for DA style lenses with no aperture ring of their own. I normally leave it wide open when working with manual lenses (which I was when this occurred.

Everything was fine until suddenly it wasn't. Of course that is usually how it works.

Working with a 400mm manual lens on my Q7. Tested before the hunting trip and everything worked as expected. Arrived in the hunting area and went to use the Q7/400mm combination and the aperture stuck closed tight. I fiddled with the aperture ring on the adapter a bit and it is now partially open but it has now stopped moving at all. Turning the aperture ring has no effect.

Has anyone had this problem and, if so, is there an easy fix or does it need to be sent for repair.

Finally, if it has to be sent out for repair who would you recommend?

Thank you for your suggestions.

Thanks for the information..

Looking at this one closely as a possible replacement for my K5 ii. Still checking reviews. $2,000 for a body is a trifle steep but prices may drop a bit by the time I'm ready to buy.

An absolutely excellent 1st choice!

Next to my Q7 this is my most used digital Pentax and I love the color rendering of the sensor.

Thank you everyone.

I will place a call to Quality Light tomorrow to see if he is interested in looking at my meter.

Meanwhile I am reviewing the information provided by C.A.M. with great interest. If all else fails I will be putting those resources to use and attempting to get this meter running again.

I have an external light meter that attaches to my SV that is not working. Is there a good option out there to get these meters repaired?

Any suggestions, repair shops, on-line repair manuals, you-tube repair videos, are all good options but I have been unable to find anything so far.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Worked out just fine.

In case anyone is curious the film was developed in HC-110 1+63 for 7.5 minutes at 67F. It was agitated continuously in a Jobo tank.

Someone mentioned that Ultrafine Extreme is rebadged Kentmere. Just out of curiosity, where is Ultrafine Extreme manufactured?

BTW, I have a roll of UFX400 that I accidentally exposed at EI-100 so I intend to pull process by about 30% with HC-110. We'll see if it works.

The "Vintage Digital Camera" thread (celebrating old, obsolete digital cameras!)

My first digital SLR was my Pentax *ist DL2. I still own it and I still love the photos that I get from it. In fact, with today's software it is actually still quite a viable camera if you keep your prints to about 8x10. I'm pretty sure it qualifies for this thread. :D

A problem I have with it is that it doesn't get used enough anymore so when I do get around to installing batteries it takes a few start ups and shutdowns until the camera realizes that there are fully charged batteries on-board. Not sure why this happens but I have learned to be patient with it.

The other problem (though I don't really consider it one) is that the auto focus drive no longer works. So I had Katzeye install one of their split image focus screens and now I use it fully manual. Kind of like an electronic K1000 if you will.

I'll dig around and find some images from it. I am still gobsmacked by those wonderful Pentax colors whenever I use it. Absolutely lovely photographs.

Amazon suck.

Amazon is only the latest in a very long line of large, discount retailers who have thrived by underpricing the previous businesses. Eventually Amazon will have elbowed out the majority of the competition and will begin to raise their prices because they are effectively the only one left. At that point another business will begin their own climb to the top of the heap and will begin elbowing Amazon out. Recently Amazon has had the upper hand but their stock will begin to wilt as the market becomes less satisfied with their growth and they will eventually find it difficult, then impossible, to maintain their position.

The cycle just continues. Witness the sad fate of Sears/K-Mart who, in their day, were also the great big gorillas in the marketing jungle. Picking on their employees may make you feel better, but it makes no difference. Likewise sacrificing and paying more to "save the little guy" is a wonderful thought but probably hurts you, the individual consumer, far more than it helps the little guy.

Right now it is online companies who are on top. Amazon, Google, Apple, E-Bay, Paypal, Facebook and a few others have managed to fight their way to the top and they are the ones we all like to pick on. But, one thing about the internet, what used to take decades to happen now seems to happen in just a few years. A lot of those common household names may be history within the next 10 years and our grandchildren's children will never have heard of them.

Q system not dead? Ehhh. . .

I had a nice little bridge camera, I think it was a Sony, that I gave away after I picked up my Q. Nice little camera but the flexibility of the Q was more useful for me and I quit using the Sony all together.

I picked up the K/Q adaptor as well and I used some pretty long glass in the beginning. Now I am using my FA 135/2.8 or my DA 100 Macro but not much else. Those two give me plenty of reach for what I do and I can still pretend that I can handhold them in good light. (Handholding with those two lenses usually turns out ok if I don't try and print too big; but I get a lot of failures as well.)

Lately I have my original Q set to monochrome with the yellow filter and a 1:1 aspect ratio. Its' a novelty for sure but I am having fun with it. Trying to get better at composing with the wide angle zoom but I still need a whole lot of practice. :)

Yeah. An improved LCD would certainly be nice as long as battery life doesn't get worse.

The odd fact about image quality is that I have never, ever had anyone tell me that the prints I handed them were deficient whether the image was captured with my Q, my Q7, K10D or my K5iis. I quit worrying about Q image quality in prints a LONG time ago.

Composition is still a far more important thing to worry about but camera reviewers don't seem to test for that. :D

Works great. A little expensive to purchase upfront but it lasts so long (50 rolls or more per quart of developer) that it is about as cheap as it comes for a developer.

Just don't contaminate Solution A with any Solution B and it will last halfway to forever.

Beyond the manual setting problem the idea of using some of my Takumar lenses with the K-01 is intriguing.

I need to spend some time playing with this setup. I like M42 Takumar lenses and I love the K-01. The combination should be terrific.

One of the few threads that I truly enjoy catching up on whenever I can. The photos are always beautiful. Thank you all for taking the time to post your wonderful work.

Winter is coming on (snow on the ground yesterday) and I am not interested in developing any color film in my freezing garage for a bit. So the K10D is out on the table again and will substitute nicely for the K1000 for the next few months.

All the talk of Takumars a few pages back has inspired me to hook up my newly acquired Tak 24. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'll take some time outdoors to see what comes of it.

I guess I am a bit confused as to how a K-1 would improve those shots. They already look pretty good to me.

No offense intended to the full frame crowd but Pentax's APS-C cameras are still awesome tools.

Brooke is obviously a very, very capable artist.

It will be very, very difficult to find a better lens than that solid Pentax standby, the SMC FA 50mm f1.4 whether you are using digital or film. Especially at the price that Ricoh is selling that lens for new.

Enjoy your new camera. Fuji has done a really good job of developing and building some extremely nice digital cameras. Lots of people move to smaller and lighter cameras. Perhaps you should consider moving entirely to a cell phone since that is even smaller and lighter.

I seriously doubt that the dSLR will be going anywhere soon. Digital camera sales are dropping off of a cliff for everyone. The only thing that seems to be growing is Fuji's Instax camera brand. The internet talking heads certainly did not see that coming and a very large majority of them still don't seem to know what to make of it. They love to speculate but they rarely, if ever, see any of the major trends coming, let alone predict them in advance so I don't pay too much attention to their babbling. They can be entertaining though.

I know even less than the internet babblers but I think that Canon and Nikon are just hedging their bets in an effort to continue to maintain their historical dominance in the camera market. Sony has been pretty successful lately and it has gotten hard for them to ignore that some of their customers have been moving over to Sony. It is entirely possible that their new cameras (which by the way are no way near as small or as light even as the Pentax K-1) will begin to cannibalize the sales of their current slr camera lines while failing to attract any new customers. No one really knows how this is going to work out for them.

Heck, with Fuji moving into medium format in a big way you might be able to prognosticate that larger than full frame will the new wave of the future as sensors get better and larger. It is even possible that both Nikon and Canon are eyeing this new market as well considering that their new lens flanges will very easily cover medium format sensors.

Internet talking heads have declared Pentax dead before and have turned out wrong. Ricoh is making some extremely nice cameras, and IMHO is doing a very good job of keeping the Pentax brand alive and vibrant, particularly in this current market. Sometimes being a copycat and following all the latest fads is not the best way to run a business. They already dabbled with mirrorless and it didn't seem to work out very well for them.

One thing I think we can certainly say for sure, the immediate future of the digital camera industry is going to be very interesting to watch! :D
