A decent AF (just get close to the D7500), KP image quality and 9fps at 1300-1400 with some fast lenses would put a lot of pressure on the D500/7500. Pentax already has a better APS-C lens selection it just needs a few quick focus lenses available. Even better would be the opportunity to add stabilized lenses and use the IBIS and lens combined like Olympus which would give unrivaled stabilization and image quality in APS-C. Throw in EV -4 focus just to show off.

I looked through all the ISO settings on dpreview with my K3 and D750 and I think you'll be very happy with ISO. It and the much more expensive D500 have some really nice high ISO performance that's very close to full frame now. Most Nikon sites recommend the D500 over D750 in fact because it's so close, and the KP is right there with the D500 in image quality.

I think the K3iii with that technology, or even better boosted up a bit will make for a really nice image in APS-C.

My EM10ii is 5 axis SR and has no problem shooting down to 1/4 second reliably. Should be similar for KP. Hopefully Pentax will give everyone something like Sync IS which Olympus has on a handful of lenses and bodys. It basically merges the in body IBIS and lens VR at the same time giving you something like 6.5 stops of stabilization. Reviews are 2-20 second handheld shots with that system which is extremely impressive. I'd love to see a couple new Pentax lenses and system like that with the K3iii as that would be the only system in APS-C to have it.

Anyone think Pentax or other companies will start to utilize some of the software processing that Cell phones like the Iphone 8/10 and Pixel 2 are using? They're going to pretty crazy lengths to extract everything they can out of those tiny sensors and judging by DSLR sales they keep getting better at it. I'm by no means saying a cell phone image is dlsr but some of the HDR processing, "fake" bokeh, simulated studio lighting etc are starting to get pretty good. The fake bokeh even fades with distance like an actual lens now.

I think I'm more interested in things like sensors that can divide up an image based on highlights and shadows and independently apply different ISO levels to multiple portions of an image. I know Pentax has nothing remotely close to what Google or Apple have for software programmers but I do wonder if some of these techniques will make it into DSLR.

I've found Livecomp (realtime image stacking of highlights) to be extremely useful on OMD's.

Some of these techniques, especially if Pentax grabs them exclusively could be unique features for the brand.

I'm replacing my years old phone with a newer version Iphone 8 plus this afternoon (buy one, second one 100 dollars btw if you have two lines) and it's not looking good for other camera sales how fast the smartphone camera's are progressing. They're getting really competent in low light now with the latest releases (and super expensive). The latest iphones have dual lenses (28 and 56mm) as well and 3 are soon to follow. I won't be surprised if they cover something like 24/35/50 or 28/50/85 prime coverage on them very soon. The artificial bokeh is just going to get better.

It's diminishing returns for sure. In the end just getting the right image matters more than all of it. The "cheap camera, pro photographer" episodes on youtube are fun to watch when they hand the pro's a lego camera and they still get interesting images.

I'll probably keep my K3 and ultra wide and the 100mm macro for now with K3 as it gets the job done for me.

I really really hope Pentax gets Livebulb/Livecomp and focus stacking in the new body. Pixel Shift in camera so it's ready to go in Lightroom would be really nice too.

If you havn't seen Livecomp/bulb have a look it's a killer feature that I love on the OMD's. Shooting lightning is like fish in the barrel with it.

Livebulb reminds me of watching a photo expose in a darkroom as a kid.

The worst feeling is being such a camera nerd and showing my wife prints from 4 different systems and she can't tell the difference what came from where, always hurts a little inside.

The K-3 is fine under iso 1600 so if it's doing what you want then totally not worth any change. It still does well up to ISO 6400 in RAW as well IMO. The D750 is cleaner all around but it's not going to induce heart murmurs or anything. The AF really is a nice upgrade over the K3. When I compared both in RAW then post processed them in lightroom the D750 is much less work for high ISO but K3 still gets great shots.

After all that Pixel peeping in out other thread I found the KP really impressive, hopefully that sensor gets in the K3iii or a even better 24mp. I think it'll surpass the older D750 at that time.

For low light for what it's work K3 is better in AF-S single point in the dark than D750 by like half an EV, Nikon rates it as -3 but SAFOX beats it in that area. For AF-C and facial recognition on the eyes the D750 is excellent.

I'm not sure what's going on with reds, honestly I've never had a complaint with colors on any Pentax body. I don't think it's enough difference to matter outside pixel peeping. I think Imaging Resource is all JPEG in the comparison, K3's RAW is much better than it's JPEG imo. If you shoot JPEG next to D750 the high iso is much more than in RAW, probably just due to changes in processing in the newer body.

A AF refresh on K3iii and KP sensor will make for a really nice upgrade if they pull that off.

For "wouldn't get better without D750" the only critical difference is AF-C imo in some missed shots on the K-1 or K3, IQ is better on the FF 24mp more so in RAW flexibility with DR and ISO. Resolution it's a wash and the K3 has no AA which is nice. K-1 will top both of them for those shots that you nail. K3's a great price these days. I'm happy with the 1499 on the D750 but the switch was more about lenses for me than IQ advantage. I'm happy with K3 in that regard overall.

It's hard not to see the ILC sales slow for everyone with how good the current sensors are for typical needs honestly regardless of upgrades.

I'd have a hard time upgrading my D750 for a D850 even if they dropped the price to 2000 dollars. At prints 16x20 that is about the max I use 24mp looks excellent. Even my EM10ii produces gorgeous prints at 16mp in that size.

We're getting into specialized needs with the higher MP counts and increasing ISO capability on the new bodys, hard to justify that extra 2k when what you already have is so good.

I don't shoot much above 12800 as I'm sure many of you don't either. However having ISO 51200 look like 3200 on a K-1 today would certainly be attractive if just for the convenience or rapidly taking night shots.

The KP and D500 made a massive jump in ISO performance on APS-C.

I'd say yes to some, myself included. I jumped to D750 over K-1 as I'm ok with 24mp but had higher priority in AF and lens options.

If the D760 or whatever it's called is 36mp as rumored with D5 AF that is a tough call vs the K-1ii for customers IMO. Right now K-1 is a definitive image quality advantage in it's price bracket but for how long? The A7R and Rii are rapidly closing on the K-1's price point as well, they're 1799 and 2400 today.

Those A7xx series need a battery magazine compared to ILC though.

I'd have been perfectly happy with a K-1 and D750 level AF over a D850. IQ on the K-1 is plenty for me and I don't see much difference vs the 45mp in the D850. It's the other things in that camera that are attractive like the D5's AF, framerate (although as you mentioned 5fps isn't bad at all).

If K-1 had D750 Af and a few more lenses Pentax is there.

The primes could use some faster motors, way to much screw drive with Pentax at the moment. The 50 1.8 on Nikon which is 200 dollars has a decent electric motor in it, why can't Pentax at least update some of those and get some midrange priced 24/35/50/85's out like the Nikon G line.

Is it enough for you guys with K-1's to upgrade? I don't see guys with D850's making a switch for a half stop of high ISO.

I think people making the jump to K-1 probably have mostly done so. Sales for this K-1ii will highly depend on whether you guys that own it upgrade or K3 owners decide it's worth the jump.

I wouldn't expect any more than the current K-1 or D810 for low light if they do that. The other rumor for them is a updated 24mp and D5 Autofocus. A new 24mp would probably be better at low iso but still not have the resolution of the 36mp sensors, framerate would likely increase though.

The D850 is worse in high iso. You get more color depth and DR for that tradeoff and more resolution. If I had 3300 dollars I would get the D850 over a K-1 for sure as it does everything but low light better and low shutter speed primes. It's double the price of the K-1 and not double the image quality. Really a minor upgrade in IQ and a downgrade in iso on the D850. That camera's main strength is it also shoots fast framerates (double K-1 9fps) and has a really good AF system. Crop mode (19.4mp) would also be viable for getting that extra reach on telephoto's and you'll have that D5 autofocus.

Camera sales have contracted a ton in the past 5 years so everyone's piece of the pie shrank. Nikon's about to chase the mirrorless market and who knows how that will turn out since Sony/Fuji/Olympus have a huge head start. The Nikon 1 1" camera's face planted compared to Sony's 1" options.

They're saying *Nikons Doomed* over there as well now that ILC camera sales have contracted more than half in the past 5 years.

I doubt the 36mp sensor is end of life, maybe some modifications and a new part number which generated rumors that it's dead.

The D760 is rumored to use a 36mp sensor which is probably the same one in the k-1 minus the ricoh accelerator part. It wouldn't be a surprise to see the a7II successor also use 36mp.

Tough competition for the K-1ii ahead with everyone else over 40mp and the budget FF market switching to 36mp.

I agree the successor to K3 will probably surpass the D750 and the other 24mp sensored full frames. Looking at the KP and D500 image quality it's already really close in ISO. You could pair a 150-450 with a K3 but it would cost more than pairing a D7500 to a Sigma 150-600 so I'm not sure that would be the route to take for APS-C for that extra reach. Keep in mind (not now no sales) that a few of us picked that D750 up for 1999 with the grip and 24-120 (which costs 1000 on it's own). For all around use I'm very happy with it compared to my K3. The AF-C really is that much better on the Nikon's for wildlife as well, it's just easier to use with more keepers. At ISO 100 pretty much anything will work well although your looking at about a stop less DR in the K3 vs D750. At low iso though who cares they both produce nice quality images.

I think the K-1ii is about to knock it out in ISO compared to the other FF cameras which will cement Pentax's advantage for landscape and still photo's.

As much crap as the KP got the sensor is good in it. Hopefully the K3-3 has updated AF on par with the D7500. That and just convince either Tamron or Sigma to bring one of those longer lenses to K mount. The Tamron 150-600 G2 is weather sealed and would make a great Pentax lens. I would stick with Pentax if that lens was around, (and it wouldn't hurt to have all the Sigma ART lenses either.)

Who knows what Nikon will replace the D750 with either, it's 3 years old now and they'll either drop it or replace it with the mirrorless that's enroute or maybe a 36mp version, who knows. A 36mp version with the AF from the D850/D5 would be a competitive camera.

You get a better sensor in K-1 but it's irrelevant if 24mp is meeting your needs, would I want it sure, just not enough to sway the purchase for me personally. As for DR and ISO it's a tiny difference between the 24/36mp sensors, verified on DXO. It's not like the D750 is way down the list. No matter what you pay you also don't get the Tamron or Sigma 150-600 or the AF in the Nikon with Pentax, also a factor. Sensor size isn't everything in a camera.

At least they improved it vs the K3 line. All I see in reviews (esp the dpreview one) are not great AF-C results. Other than that Cameraville guy but he seems a bit biased to Pentax like he's about to become the Jared Polin of Pentax youtube.

If it's fixed they need to beat this point to absolute death, then kick it some more, and one last time, again until it's no longer discussed anywhere. While comparing with D750 I saw this mentioned countless times which definitely was a factor in my decision having become really annoyed with AF-C in my K3/5/7 over the last 9 years. Really the 150-600's availability killed the K-1 for me more than AF-C, they need to do something naughty with Sigma or Tamron and get those in K mount.

Pentax has/had so many loyal users in APS-C they shouldn't squander that.

As for FF they have a great camera in the K-1 but as an objective buyer it's tough to not look at the D810 at it's reduced price or the D850 and pick that instead with so many more lens options. Pentax can't just be the "landscape" guys, they'll lose that match in the long run. A D850 with 6 different wides to choose from, some of which cost almost a thousand dollars less than the 15-30 for Pentax while still being optically very good(Tokina 17-35) means that price difference is not that large or at all with the 810. This is the reality in the market that Pentax is up against. Sony's mirrorless are also attractive but still have less lenses or very expensive lenses. The battery's are also terrible lifewise on mirrorless and OVF still is better depending on the circumstance.

I went though all these things in my head before grabbing a D750 because it was less 1499 and acceptable in image quality for my needs giving me access to the cheaper telephoto's that Sigma and Tamron have, plus all those nice ART lenses etc for future purchase.

Pentax full frame system compared to Canon or Nikon

For resolution the K-1 certainly is better, better than the A7s as well. The AA filter on the D750 requires a bit of sharpening in post to eliminate. K-1 has no AA filter. I see a tiny bit more noise and a purple haze on the K-1 in the blacks that isn't there on the D750 or A7. All of this is easy to fix in post or just shoot lower ISO under 6400.

K-1 has a great sensor and I'd take it in a heartbeat in the D750 body if it was an option for that price. I'd also take a Pentax with D750's AF in 24mp in a heartbeat if it was available.

I own the D750 after debating between it and the K-1. I picked it for AF advantage and lens options that Pentax doesn't have (long telephoto's, cheaper third party options). I love the D750 it's quick to start up, fast enough shutter wise for me and had really good AF-C compared to my Pentax K-3. Image quality is great but it's 24mp so keep that in mind if your planning very large prints or like to crop a lot as the K-1 will have an advantage. Battery's last very long on the D750 (1230 shots)

Pentax AF isn't bad at all in AF-S, My K3 is exceptionally good at low light focus in AF-S with a single point, it just requires more work or techniques for fast subjects with less keepers. If that's not a big deal and lenses exist for now and future needs the K-1 is a great camera with exceptional image quality.

You'll be looking at 2300 for a D750 and 24-120 f4. 50mm 1.8 will be @ 200, plus a 90mm 2.8 macro (tamron WR) is 649 or a Sigma 105 for 569 or Tokina 2.8 for 350. so all together 2859 to 3159. The D750 body is weather sealed. A D810 (same sensor as K-1) with the same lenses is 3859 to 4159 btw. 250 dollars more than the K-1 with the less expensive third party lenses.

Look very closely at lenses you need now and anything in the future as that's more important than the body as those will change frequently.

The K-1 is excellent and if it fits your needs you'll be very happy especially for landscapes and portraits as well as macro. End image quality will be higher resolution. A similar setup will run 3600 for a K-1, 43 1.9, 28-105 plus 100mm Macro WR. The 28-105 has better sealing then the 24-120 (rear gasket only i think). I'd pick the 24-120 f4 however as it's got a really quick AF motor in it and wider/longer range.

If Pentax meets your lens needs go with the K-1. Pentax has excellent ergonomics and button controls which I'd rate as the best in the industry and I've owned Fuji/Nikon/Olympus/Sony/Canon in the past 10 years.

If you need/want telephoto's and fast AF I'd pass on the K-1 and go D750, or if you want a "all rounder" that has lower resolution photos but a much larger choice of lenses. Thing's like the 24-70 and 70-200 plus wide zooms are covered for Pentax but there are multiple options of each in Nikon that are often much less money but still high quality. An example would be the 15-30 wide angle, which is a tamron design. It's available in Nikon as well as Nikon 12-24, 16-35 etc plus sigma/tokina etc options, in just wide angle you'll have a lot to choose from. That Tokina 17-35 f4 is 399 for a ultra wide vs 1 option for Pentax costing 1250 dollars. Keep that in mind with your choice.

The "slim" profile markets been stolen by M43 and Sony's mirrorless as you said. APS-C lenses are still big. That used to be a Pentax advantage a while ago. I agree, they are toast going after that.

APS-C needs to be a very strong marriage of performance (high iso/resolution vs iphone/M43) and value. Otherwise FF is very attractive as it's not much different in size for a DSLR.

KP and whatever K3xxx need to best the 7dii/D500/7500's out there which have really high performance. The sensor in the KP is really good, they just need AF and overall speed to back that up. Maybe grab some tricks that Olympis uses like Livebulb and Livecomp, Focus stacking in camera etc, as those are killer features on that platform.

Its a bit late for me as I already started to jump to Nikon but had a K3iii with near equivalent AF to a 7500/750 with KP sensor hit the market I would probably Stay in the Pentax ecosystem other than long telephoto's. They really are waiting too long and not giving current users some light at the end of the tunnel.

---------- Post added 02-13-2018 at 02:51 PM ----------

Yes, and with M43 the "pro" lenses and EM1 line are nearly as big as APS-C. If you stick to EM10/5 and the lighter plastic lenses (which are excellent) it's a massive size/weight savings at not a huge expense in image quality.

Competing with M43 for compact size is a losing battle for anything in APS-C, the sensors are really good as are the lens lineup.

Pentax needs to be the muscle car brand for image quality, keep dropping the sensors in of camera's costing twice as much to attract people who will make the compromise of having less lenses to pick and AF-C not being as high performance. That 1000-2000 dollar price point the K3ii was in now is flooded with FF options and very high performance APS-C so that's harder then ever.

Any chance The K-1ii could share the one in the D850? If that's not contracted specifically to them? Seems like going 45mp will get them marketing brag rights, it seems to be a good sensor.

My only critical complaints for Pentax FF are in the lense availability (hence D750 listed below, no 150-600 tamron/sigmas) and AF-C. AF-S is great. AF-C is really behind. Just borrow someones properly setup Nikon/Canon/Olympus Em-1ii in AF-C sometime, Pentax needs to close that gap. Olympus and Fuji both had slow AF and closed that up. It feels like Pentax has saved money in that area for a while as I'm sure it's expensive to develop.

That print button is super useful, thanks for that. Clicking that basically orders in best-->worst A7s/ii >D750>K-1/D810 (identical) By "worst" I mean they are all good.

The difference is super small and only at ISO's above 6400 does it show up in any meaningful way. The resolution of the 36 (and 42/45 on the A7iii and D850) is significantly better. For large prints it's a no brainer to get the camera with the bigger sensor if you can and it has the lenses you need to create images your after.

** Nobody uses ISO 51200, it's just to show the difference, at lower iso's they're all very good. Thinking of you Normhead!

The heroes that are left out of this discussion are the KP and the D500/7500 latest generation APS-C bodys. WOW those things are better than the K3/ii etc that came before them. They are very close to full frame in ISO perfomance now, same for M43, it's behind but more than usable now for a small sensor.

I'm guessing K-1ii will be the 42mp sensor in the A7iii which is great, hopefully the price stays at @2000 and Pentax continues to deliver a great sensor at the best price. Anyone think the K-1 would use the 45mp sensor out of the D850 or is that exclusively contracted to Nikon?

You can buy a D7500 + a Sigma 150-600 C for within a few hundred bucks of a 150-450 (just the lens) Similar AF to the D750. Or a 7d ii with the same lens for a few hundred more. Just for BIF needs that might be the way to go instead of picking up the 150-450 (and TC's).

The K-1 and 15-30 seems like the ultimate landscape and astro camera. I don't have a super wide yet for my D750 (Still using K3 plus sigma 8-16). Maybe if they K-1 drops in price with the K-1ii I'll grab that combo instead and get the resolution upgrade. Best of both worlds.

Looking for a higher megapixel photo? They do both.
Looking for less noise? They do both.
Looking for more detail? They do both.

Your defining win/loss based on technicality. In the end they both produce a better looking photo. Both require static objects but the Pentax system can auto-edit out some small motion items to some degree. Pixel shift is a limited use application, like image merging.

I've admitted time and again Pentax does some things better. Keep moving goalposts. I've owned 3 of them and a bunch of lenses, still own some. I just admit when I see something done better elsewhere.

Calling me a Nikon fanboy is a joke. I've got 4 brands of Camera and readily admit which does what better or worse, something you obviously are incapable of doing as you attack relentlessly anyone entering this forum with anything other than "Pentax is best". That's the definition of fanboy.

People came in here looking for differences, myself and others who have multiple systems pointed them out. If you don't like that fine. Relentlessly attacking anyone who mentions "brand x has an edge here" isn't helping them make a choice in the system they want for their needs.

Pentax has it's strengths and it's weaknesses like every brand.

---------- Post added 02-12-2018 at 10:11 AM ----------

Agreed, ISO 51200 is stupid. Is there a difference in low light iso vs the K-1 and D750 which you and others said can't be true? Yes slight advantage D750. I personally very rarely go above ISO 12800 in any camera body. Is the D750 now the king of all cameras? No the K-1 has a better 36 megapixel sensor with slightly better dynamic range and it's a better stills and landscape camera bar none. Better than the other brands using the same sensor for those applications too. (Did I just say Pentax was good at something!)

I think IR is using JPEG unfortunately. I'd say win for low noise on D750, K-1 huge win for detail. I prefer the dpreview compare tool as you can select RAW. Pentax has always favored detail over noise in JPEG but they tend to get a blotchiness in JPEGs that others don't. I personally use RAW 90% of the time with all my cameras otherwise your losing all that dynamic range in lightroom.

K-1 is much better if your after higher resolution and details in shots, I've never argued otherwise. Weren't we talking about a high iso difference?

On dpreview it seems like some color noise is making it's way in, the blacks are kinda tinted on the K-1 (and D-810). Nothing that couldn't be quickly fixed with a bit of noise correction in lightroom. Like most of these differences were all hot blooded over a very small difference in image quality.

Have a gander, there are techniques that do basically what pixel shift does. We need to be scientists now to look at two pictures and see which has less noise? Keep moving the goalposts Normhead.

Which is what we've been saying this entire time, less noise, not better resolution. I 100% agree the K-1 is better for more resolution.
