APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM and Pentax K70

I have both the Pentax K50 and the K70. When I noted this problem on K70 I immediately tested the lens on the K50. The lens worked perfectly. As it should. No issues with the HSM. The lens isn't compatible with the K70.

I'm waiting on Sigma to respond to an email. Will see if they say anything. I'll be well upset if they say they don't support Pentax anymore.

Pentax K-1 arrived today

K-1 arrived today. Timing couldn't have been better. Yesterday was the first day, in a month, that the road to the house wasn't flooded. Today was also my only day off for a week. PentaxForums member hongzhibin1987 is great to deal with. The camera is in mint shape. Thanks man.

I've shot Pentax dslr's since the *ist DS. Always use cameras before reading the ib, to see how easy it is for students and others to use. My last dslr was a K-7. Thanks Pentax for not changing every basic control on every model. Had camera up and running in no time. Except none of my memory cards worked. Finally figured out it was set for 2 cards. I had only inserted one card (in jpeg slot) and tried to shoot Raw.

Was worried about the size increase. Well, It is bigger than the Q and smaller than the Pentax 6X7. Noticeably bigger and heavier than K-01 and K-7, but more comfortable than either to hold. The K-1 will be fine. The AF is amazing vs those two cameras.

Haven't looked yet. What is the most current firmware for the K-1?

Now a couple of images. Flowers with Pentax 200 macro. Building at night with Pentax 77 Limited.
Thanks for looking and for all the help,

Laowa 24mm Macro Probe

This lens has generated some interest however the specialized nature and price tag seems to be limiting factors in its acquisition. I'm interested in the lens but would rather spend the funds upgrading my camera body and buying a few other lenses first.

Certainly a nice feature is the waterproof sleeve with built-in LEDs.

pentax Kp with HD 16-85mm lens

There are several things that could of happened to your lens. There is a very good chance that your lens worked when it left the factory. It could of been damaged during shipping or when stocked at the retailer you purchased it from. So before bashing a brand new product I would suggest doing what any reasonable person would do. Return it for replacement. If they give you a problem doing that. Then you have a reason to start bashing them.

Could you elaborate? Why not just get it replaced? This is something that most customers never experience, and the reason that there's a warranty.

K-1 size and weight question

It's noticeably heavier than the K5 which is not unlike the K10, but it does not feel that much heavier than the K5. I use my K-1 with the battery grip all the time as I find that, as with the K5, my right hand 'rests' nicely against the battery grip / body right side, and that makes the K-1 very comfortable to hold in one hand while controlling and holding the lens with the left hand. So much so, that I never remove the battery grip.

Lenses: what has demand and what has not - facts

4 zooms sold for every prime.....
Why does this not surprise me?

My own collection.

3 telephoto zooms, 3 ultra wide zooms, 4 standard zooms - 10 zooms
4 macro primes- 3 standard primes, 1 ultra wide prime, 2 telephoto primes.

Despite constantly having to defend the use of zooms. I'm actually 50/50 zoom vs. prime and way above average in prime ownership, where as those who argue they have to have all primes are out on some kind of extreme edge.

I have two variable aperture telephoto zooms and 1 constant aperture telephoto.
Standard zooms, 3 variable aperture, 1 constant aperture.

I have 1 wide angle prime

Ultra wide angle zooms 3 variable aperture.

Looking at the numbers, I'm a prime extremist. The all prime users are the lunatic fringe.

Just kidding:D

Don't skewer me. :D

Lenses: what has demand and what has not - facts

CIPA has some interesting facts on lens sales. The demand (quantity) in 2018 for lenses had clear favorites:

48% of demand go into standard zooms (28-105, 24-70 ...)
28% superzooms and telezooms (70-200, 150-450 ...)
19% all types of primes (that means zooms outsell primes 4:1 and it also menas that every single focal length prime is a niche with probably 0-1%)
3% wide zooms (15-30 ...)
2% special purpose (macro, tilt/shift, cine, soft focus ...)

Over time there is little change. The only shifts are:
a) more primes
b) less telezooms

I agree. And I think the real reason the smart phone sales are slumping has more to do with the way they're marketed and sold these days, especially in the US. Long gone are the days of the "free" phone from service providers, or a small fee to upgrade to a smart phone. The new model is the monthly payment plan (a current model iPhone through my carrier is $45 a month for 24 months, that's $1010 without tax, insurance, etc! And even a cheaper phone at half that rate is still a lot of money), which adds up quickly. I think people are finally realizing they're paying way too much for a portable entertainment device. I'm a heavy smart phone user for work and life, and even I'm not willing to shell out big bucks (or Euros, or Yen or...) for overpriced tech. Both my kids, children of the smartphone era, have dialed back their devices from the "must have latest and greatest" iPhone or Android (now that they are responsible to fit the bill for their phones) to refurbished LG's that cost them about $25 out of pocket. I don't see smart phones going away but I think the current business model has run it's course.

Portraits with the Pentax DFA* 50mm F1.4 at Japan-Day, Düsseldorf, Germany

Tried some portraits at last weekend's Japan-Day. The event draws tons of cosplayers from all over Germany and most of the time we get good weather, too.
As cosplayers are quite open to being photographed I grabbed the opportunity.
I continue to like the lens' rendering and it is really good for this type of subjects.

Maybe you like some of them. :)

On his behalf, I'd like to thank everyone who donated directly or purchased an ebook. Bear in mind that any future sales will benefit Yvon as well. I trust he will share an update with the community in due time!

I've already bought the books of his I need (since they actually tell you how to use your camera, unlike a manufacturer's manual which is just a reference) so I'm going to donate by PayPal.

You can tell (even in writing, and in a second language) that he's pragmatic, an assister of people and a proud Pentaxian, so we should do anything we can to help him in his battle.

Lots of love to you, Yvon!

Local Canadian source for JIS screwdrivers - Canadian Tire

For those Canadians looking for JIS screwdrivers:

Canadian Tire carries a "specialty precision electronics bit set, 66 piece", which includes small slotted bits and four JIS bits, among other useful bits.

Mastercraft Specialty Precision Electronics Bit Set, 66-pc | Canadian Tire

The usual price is less than CAD $40, and sometimes the kit is on sale at half price.

I don't own the set myself, so I can't comment on its quality. It's branded 'Mastercraft'.

Max SD memory card capacity?

There is no limit beyond the 2Tb theoretical maximum for SDXC cards, which has not yet been reached in production cards (but undoubtedly will soon). As for the card to get, check out this comprehensive guide:

Comprehensive SD Card Guide for Photographers - Articles and Tips |

TLDR you can't go wrong with any sandisk extreme card, and it will deliver optimal performance with all the current Pentax bodies. Lifetime warranty is another plus as they will replace faulty cards for you if you keep your receipts.

I would second the Pro-show software as it has a lot of features and is dedicated to the task while allowing you to publish to places like YouTube, DVD, etc.

Alternatively, besides the options above, PowerPoint can do well if you already have Microsoft Office (not sure how many people do anymore, but it is standard for my office job) and I would assume that any other Office Alternative could do it through its presentation software.

AF360FGZ ii flash unit is down for the count

Yes, unless needing WR, Metz are really good units. For a bit more money than the repair, it's possible to get a 52 AF-1 which will offer significantlymore power than the 360.

Another option would be the YN585. Yes, it's cheap, but it's possible to get a pair for the price of the repair... And so far, people on the forum having them seem happy with their purchase.

Can you please provide any tips on how I can kill it with normal use so I may obtain permission from the Chief Household Officer (my wife) to buy a new AF540FGZII? Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Pentax, a forgotten camera brand
Posted By normhead

What's affordable for one isn't affordable for others. Pentax no longer desires to be the "affordable" brand. When I look at flickr, and I see there are more Pentax shooters than Rebel Ti6 shooters, I wonder, why would you waste resources on entry level cameras in this market if you can sell more high end cameras?

As I noted when the K-1 came out. Pentax is focussed on quality, not the kind of rock bottom lenses that are "affordable". They aren't going to put a lot of effort into "bottom of the barrel" low margin product. I bought my FA-J 18-35 new in box, years after production ended. Cheap and dirty didn't sell.

After all these years, I've sent back more Sigma lenses than I've kept and as many failed as I have. Maybe they area good idea for light users who mostly want lens to keep in the closet for the odd time they need it. I haven't found them to be every day lenses, and 1/3 of the ones I've purchased have been so substandard new right out of the box I sent them back.

Of my 6 Sigma purchases 4 are now trash, or were trash as delivered. I've never had to return a single Pentax lens.
