Chinon CP-9AFautofocus lens, Pentax digital SLR compatibilty

I have all three of the K mount program cameras and the slimed down versions, Chinon CP-5, Pentax Super Program, Program Plus and Ricoh XR-P and KR-30sp. The XR-P, still uses the old fashioned shutter speed dial which would make it my favorite of the era; The KR-30Sp was the camera I bought as a graduation present to myself but, the Ricoh electronics are no longer reliable after 30 years (I have had several Ricoh bodies, just die in the middle of a roll). The Super Program is the flashiest and has the best build quality, But the CP-5, even with its plasticy feel. is the Program K mount that I use most often, I like the battery grip with AAA batteries or AA in the winder. and its very easy to use interface, and viewfinder info. And they just keep working. And the CP-7m is almost like a manual focus version of the CP-9AF and is also a great camera better than the A3000
The CP-9AF is one of those strange early dead ends, A simular situation is the Yashica 230AF, its a great camera, I like it alot, but you basicly have a choice of two lenes.

The CP 9 is an orphan camera as very few lenses were made for it and according to the Manual it only works in Program with KA amd CAF lenes.

Generic, RK, K and M lenses do work in Program mode on the CP 5 and CP 7 hence there are no P or A Chinon lenses, but both those camera have P mode. And the Sears KSX-P is labeled Dual 2 Program.

This is from the CP7m manual:
Programmed AE Signal and Aperture Setting

Unlike other program cameras, the CP-7m functions perfectly with "K" (even "KA" or "RK") mount lenses even in program mode. Generally, you
should set the aperture at its minimum seeing. Although you can take a perfectly exposed picture at any aperture setting, the applicable
programmed range is limited. The program AE signal LED is useful to check the lens aperture seeing for program modes. The programmed AE
viewfinder LED for P. PA or PC in use will "flicker" when the lens aperture is within four stops of the full maximum aperture. Set the aperture
within the range so that the programmed AE signal LED will not "flicker". On the other hand, if you would not stop down any further than a
particular f/stop, simply set the aperture ring to the desired aperture.
I have a K 3.5 28 on my CP-5 right now and Program mode works perfectly

So it looks like Chinon took a backwards step when designing the CP-9AF

As a Chinon Cp-7, CP-5 and KSX-P user, I can attest that any K-mount lens, Pentax M, Pentax A, or Ricoh P, etc. does infact work in Program mode on the CP series and Sears KSX-P, you just have to set the lens apature at the Minimum IE f16 or f22, you can also set it to a lower number if your situation requires less depth of field.
This is the one area where Chinon got the better solution compaired to Pentax and Ricoh.

I have been slowly culling my non K-mount collections, and have gotten rid of most of my non Pentax M42 bodies. My next shelf to tackle is the Canon shelf. I need to sell my neglected A2e and my small army of Rebels, just keep the 650 and 5d, AT-1 and AE-1p. I really need to get back to my original intent, Pentaxes and Ricohs. With just one or two each of Minolta, Chinon and Nikon......Yeah who am I kidding :p

Isnt Ilford labs and the Darkroom the same lab? They both have San Clemente addresses, and other simularities, order forms, mailers etc. I send everyting to the Darkroom, and choose the Medium sized scan.

Yeah I tried to take apart a XR-7 once, The electronics were very fragle. Like you, I started with a KS Super and went on to a KR-30sp, never owned a Pentax until the Ricoh got salt water damaged and I replaced it with a P30t. The Chinons apear even cheaper on the outside, but they just work. The more I use my CP-5 and KSX-P, the more I like them, they sorta fit between the Super Program and XR-P in features., and actually pass them in the ability to do program mode with any K lens and work with cheap AA batteries. And with my bad eye I find the viewfinder info on the left instead of the right just easier to read. For Manual mode I will still stick with the MX and KX.
I feel that Pentax went overboard in the transition from the ES II to the K2, I just really enjoy using my ES II, The K2 is just too qwirky.

Friday night I embarked on my trip along the north shore of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Well the Canadian Border agent in the booth, decided a 51 year old male in a car by himself, couldnt just be entering Canada with the sole purpose of Driving to Northern New York. As I was going thru Secondary, the Inspector going thru my car, paused and looked at me and said You have a lot of Cameras, it was a question not a statement. My only answer was yeah I collect old cameras. He handed me my EDL and Yellow slip and said your car is good go inside and see the imigration agents. After more quizing and having to run back to the car to get my hotel reservations, I was on my way after about 45 mins.

I have heard many times that Single middle age guys on Vacation with no set purpose or Itenerary is a red flag, so I actually expected it. It was kinda fun to actually be suspected of being up to no good for once.;)

After bragging up the XR-2s last night it died today while Taking pictures of two Salties, passing on the St. Lawarance River just below the 1000 Islands. i stoped at walmart tonight and got two new 357 batteries, and the mirror is still locked up. That is the problem with Ricohs when they work they are slightly better than there equilivant Pentax. But just try to find anyone to fix them if they quit. Hopefully when I get home I can clean the contacts and it will start working again. Lucky for me I brought along my "new" Chinon CP-5 that arrived on Wednesday just in case so I still had a black and white film body. The KX is loaded with Ektar. Seems like everytime I go on a trip, my KSX-P, CP-7M and now the CP-5 save the day.

I have a K2 and an Ricoh XR-2s, of the two cameras with basiclly the same features, the K2 is built like a brick, but the XR-2s is far more enjoyable and easy to use. This weekend on my trip around Lakes Erie and Ontario, I have my Fresh from Eric KX and the XR-2s. The K2 that was in the box with the KX stayed home.
Also the Ricoh has a much beter positioned judas windows than the KX

I think I have it narrowed down for now. I narrowed down my collection of Minoltas to just a X-700, SRT-101 and a 9000. I may get rid of a couple Sears and Chinons of various condition, Dont need both a KS-2 and an XR-7 for instance. I do have a Nikon N65 that I bought for the lens to put on a N90x.

I have seen many a ME listed as MUE's If you look at one quickly the typeface Pentax uses does make the space actually look like a U. Goodwill is really bad sometimes they will have 10 pictures of a camera and not a one shows you a clear view of what it actually is.

I signed up on the first day. I have always wanted to start developing my own film but was scared off by the need for film bags etc. And I lack of a good place in our old farm house to develope it. If this works I can do it right at the Kitchen counter with the large south facing window overlooking a bean field.

I screwed up by not advancing the film to the line before I closed the door. So the nice shot of the Barn that I was going to Print for Dad to hang in his office, is only half a frame, opps!
I also have to remember not to advance the film before I am ready to shoot, its too easy to waste a shot bumping the shutter release otherwise!

This roll and the test roll from my recently aquired Maxxum 9000 were also the first that I scanned myself.

The Camera shop in Ft. Wayne is a bad place for me to go while suffering from G.A.S. $40 for the Yasicha-Mat and about the same for the Minolta a couple weeks earlier.
If I ever walk in there and they have an LX, K2 or KM i am in trouble :)

The KSX is a KR-10 and the KSX super is a KR-10 Super/XR-10. I agree about the viewfinders in the latter Ricoh/Sears cameras, You also have to press the exposure lock on the front to activate the LED needle or you have no meter indication at all on the first shot.

But as i said before, my prefered meter display is the two physical match needle type like the non Super Ricohs and the Pentax K2 and KX Your KS-1000 is a KR-1. I have the XR-2s which was simular with Auto AV. The KR-10/A-100/KSX was basicly the same camera with some of the features such as multi exposure, and DOFpreview removed.

Well the sun is out this morning with a fresh coat of snow, so its time for me to go try out that KX and the YashicaMat I got this week!

I also got to Pentax thru Sears and Ricoh back in the late 80's, Started with a KS Super, that I got on clearance at the Lansing Sears while a Freshman at MSU. My graduation present to myself 3 years later was a Ricoh KR-30SP. Now thirty years latter, I am working on a collection of almost every Sears, Ricoh, Chinnon and Pentax. I think my favorites k-mounts are my Ricoh A-100 aka KR-10, Sears KSX-P (Chinon CP5) and My ME-F. I just got an very good KX so when the weather gets back above single digits. I plan on taking it and see how it compares to the A-100. I just love camers with the old fasioned analog two arm meters. Ricoh and Chinon had lots of great cameras but they dont seem to have the same build quality as Pentax. For instance; every KR-30SP and XR-P I have ever owned, had the mirror which is just rubber cemented get loose and slide forward causing it to jam. Mine are now held in by double sided tape. I have gone thur three XR-Ps that had wonky electronics. Many old Chinons seem to be plasticy and wear badly and look tattered. My old standby is my Chinon CP-7 its reliable and uses AA batteries, and because its so cheap and plentiful I have a drawer full of them.
