It is a wet 100+ miles north to the Canadian mainland (or a 200+ mile drive either east or west to reach the border). None-the-less, my wife and I have been confused for our Canuck friends based on our accents (which we don't hear of course) whenever we travel to Europe. The Canucks we have befriended on cross continental train rides don't have that problem; they know a Yank when they hear one. :)

For what it is worth, whenever we manage to get into Ontario we head for a grocery store where we have so far been reliably able to find jars of pitted green olives without some kind of crap stuffed into the pit cavity (pimento, garlic, onion, ...). Such fare is difficult to find in U.S. grocery stores.

My father-in-law was a dean in the local college as well as a licensed land surveyor and forester. He developed this State's first 4-year degree in land surveying and sat on the State licensing examination board. He told my wife as she was pondering what to study in college that it didn't really matter THAT much. The primary goal of any 4-year degree was to teach you how to think, secondary was some information on a potential future career. You didn't learn your career until you actually started working in that field. So long as you knew how to think, you could always change careers later and learn a new one.

I had an uncle who was an electrical engineer. He never finished high school. Yet he was the guy companies wanted to come out into the field whenever they had issues with the equipment his employer sold.

I've been to three continents. There are cultural differences but that doesn't significantly change the underlying values. You are 100% correct.

Shutter issue with K3

Somebody please check my logic... I am pretty sure the shutter curtains move from the left to the right (if you could see the motion from behind the sensor, like you could with a film camera with the back open). As the focused image is actually upside down on the sensor, that shadow would be the second curtain closing. Then taking our logic a step further, implying your flash is going off a tad too late.

In which case, Adam's suggestion should work, but in an ideal world shouldn't be necessary. Try using an electronic contact cleaner on both the camera and flash (don't spray. rather mop with a swab). It could be as simple as oxidation on one or both sides acting like a capacitor to delay the signal to discharge the flash.

One more random thought - There is X-sync (electronic flash) and there is M-sync (flash-bulb). M-sync is delayed to let the magnesium wires in the flash bulb burn to peak brightness. I am not familiar with your flash unit, but know some electronic flashes are capable of emulating M-sync to allow them to work with older cameras. This is grasping for an answer, but worth checking the flash manual.

My son-in-law was born in Uruguay - everyone in that country gets basic health care at no charge (beyond what they pay in taxes of course). If you want more than what is in the plan, you can privately purchase coverage that gets you admission to private clinics/hospitals, perhaps some advanced diagnostics and procedures. In short, everyone is immunized (less spread of disease), dying from the sniffles that would otherwise become pneumonia is far less common, common injuries are taken care of without trips to the ER (unless the injury truly needs the ER). I'm sure those with private insurance have private or semi-private rooms equipped with TV and bedside telephones.

What don't we get that making sure accessible basic health care across the board benefits all of us? Fewer missed work days, less impact from epidemics, the list just keeps going.

Careful or you will be labeled as one of those blueberries in a bowl of tomato soup to quote a former governor in your State. (okay moderator, take your shot - this topic is too important) As someone who is blessed with great lab results and relatively speaking few creaks for my age - in other words, not getting a full return today on my insurance premiums - I cannot agree more with your comments!

I'm thrilled at the progress you've made. And while we never know when our phone line will go quiet, glad to know your time hasn't come yet. (okay moderator, I'll shut up and slide back into the weeds).

this past week on a business trip...

I recently used the plastic phantastic DA35/2.8 during our niece's ceremony - no flash and minimal focus changes. For everything else I used the 18-135 with the Pentax 540 flash as needed (mostly ceiling bounce). I had the grip on my K-3. The dual body Nikon totting pro kept giving me the stink eye. Nobody else so far as I could see. My spouse made the same observation. I made sure I was never interfering with his shots, which could not always be said for the P&S, phone and tablet shooters. Near as either of us could figure out he must have felt threatened that a guy with pro-level equipment might get better shots than he did.

I never talked with the guy but my brother-in-law (bride's father) tried to strike up some small talk and came away with the impression they guy was a bit full of himself. I gritted my teeth and kept my photography activity extra low to avoid a scene. By the way, neither lens let me down.

My father in law taught at the university level. He was emphatic that the true goal of a 4-year degree is to train you to think. Learning the mechanics of a skill (whatever your degree area) was secondary and could be replicated by on the job training. Coming out of college you are compensated for the skill but over a lifetime it is your proven ability to think that determines your compensation. Oh and 'compensation' isn't always equated with 'money'.

I think another truism to go into this thread is knowing when to turn off SR. The steadier you can make the camera relative to the subject within the 1/180 total exposure time*, the less you need SR. There isn't really a single defined on-off point - using SR with a tripod might be advisable if the surface below the tripod isn't exactly bedrock. A crowded boardwalk is a good example.

I learned how to steady a camera for slower than 'recommended' shutter speeds back in the late-1970s. It wasn't exactly like you had a choice back then; film has fixed ISO, x-sync was 1/125 and hauling a tripod everywhere wasn't practical. You don't unlearn such techniques. One of the options for the fX button is to toggle SR on-off. I took it. And in iffy situations where I can take two shots, I take them with SR on then off.

*total exposure time with focal plane shutters is always x-sync or longer. Using a moving slit the exposure to any small section of the sensor can be much shorter than x-sync, but the total time for that slit to cross the sensor will be equal to x-sync.

Best bounce flash for Pentax K3

Aside from Guide Number (flash power) I think the difference between the responses so far boils down to convenience versus price. My high-end Sigma flash probably has more functionality and cost less, but for outright convenience the controls on my Pentax flashes are far more intuitive. As for results - I'd challenge anyone to tell me which flash I used if I used them with the same techniques within their respective guide numbers.

No. Isopropyl alcohol will remove grease and dirt, but not oxidation. Electronic contact cleaner should work. Do not spray on the contacts. If non-spray liquid is not available, spray into a clean paper cup and dampen a swab to use on the contact areas.

Go easy with the eraser. Most contacts have only a thin layer of gold. The gold is fairly oxidation resistant, but not completely resistant. And the material under the gold layer is typically far less resistant to oxidation.

If you use too much pressure with the eraser, you will wear away the gold layer. That is why I recommend the anti-oxidant fluids. They are not inexpensive but a very small tube can last for many years.

most electronics repair shops (including camera shops that do repairs) will have an anti-oxidation fluid. It literally takes only a tiny drop on a swab to clean both camera and flash contacts.

Exactly my thought. Right idea, wrong end of the connection. I'd start by making sure A- camera contacts and all spring pins on flashes are clean of any insulating oxidation, B- the pin springs on the flashes are still fairly strong. C- that the flashes are mounted squarely and tightly on the shoe. ... and D- while I have no experience with your specific flashes, I do know that in many cases a flash might have a factory-interchangeable foot so the core electronics will work with a range of camera brands. Is there any chance the feet on your flashes are not quite square to the flash shoe?

We needed a break yesterday and decided to visit the current county fair before the forecasted 1/4 inch / 6mm of rain dampened our day. While people were obviously enjoying themselves there always has to be a critic.
There wasn't much left of the 1st place blue ribbon, and the thank you note from the winning youth farmer to the winner of the market auction was going next...

After retiring my SuperProgram ** I returned to Pentax with a new K-r, traded for a barely used K-30, traded for a more used but still in great shape K-3. I'm finally using a body with the functions in the right places to truly replace my SuperProgram ... that said, I liked the K-r while I owned it.

One of my earliest images from the K-r:

** while most of my images will continue to be with digital gear, with the announced return of Kodak Ektachrome, my SuperProgram kit has been fully rebuilt!

Well at least you were in the same peninsula. Five to six hours further driving to the northwest and you could have said hello. (they just raised the speed limit - although everyone drove that fast anyhow - so maybe a little shorter trip now)

Growing up, I remember driving by the Vernors plant in Detroit with the huge glass windows through which you could see the oak aging barrels. Both Canada Dry and Vernors are owned by the same company these days, whoose headquarters is in Plano, Texas. Your turn Rupert.
