This reminded me of some photos Duplo posted nearly 5 years ago. They must have left a lasting impression!

He certainly did them justice. Nice to be able to step out of your nice warm loungeroom and see this spectacle!

DSLR users - do you also own a compact camera?

Not sure it's the high end compact you mean, Stan, but I have a Canon PowerShot S95. Takes an okay photo -- vastly superior to any mobile phone I've yet to see -- and offers a great deal of manual control for a compact. Best of all shoots RAW. I like it because it is tiny and robust. I thought of upgrading now the PowerShot S120 has a CMOS sensor but reviews suggest I could only expect one-third or one-quarter the battery life I get from the S95.

Wow that's remarkable, I've never seen snowflakes captured artistically before.

Now I feel like grabbing the camera and trying this for myself. What a pity it doesn't snow here. And it's summer. And temperature in the 30s...

That's a serious number of batteries for the K-5...

Yeah take the 6x7, those Ektar 100 negs you get will be worth their weight in, umm, well the weight you carry.

All for the sake of art.

Reminds me a little of crop circles from a couple of decades ago.

I like my DA 40 f2.8 Limited (pancake). It has very nice optics and a good focal length -- not so long that I'm backpedalling to fit objects into the frame nor compressing distance much at all. Long enough so there is no perspective distortion. And it's small and light. It gets a lot of use.

Gentle drizzling rain in Sydney, so much for my planned morning drive in the Blue Mountains along Bells Line of Road with the MX-5 roof down and the K-5 at the ready. But at least the heat of earlier in the week has gone making the prospect of a barbecue lunch more pleasant.

Best wishes to everyone for the holiday season, wherever you are.

The first one is a great photo of a bird (it really is a yellow-bellied sapsucker?). The second is a great photo, full stop. That terrific background and the mossy bark make it a winner bird study. Sadly not with the Kx but you've set the bar high for your current camera, Jan!

I rather like what the light is doing with the colours in the second shot. I've never taken photographs in snow; boy, it's gotta be tricky.

A tough shot when you don't have the room to yourself, and can't control the lighting. Did you take a closeup of the head, by any chance? That might have been interesting, there look to be some nice patterns, and closer positioning might have thrown the background further out of focus. Anyway, good try, given the conditions.

Technology vs. Photography

Absolutely. I like to try to shoot those sorts of photos myself, either with my DSLR or my point-and-shoot.

But I generally find discussion of the merits of the photographs themselves to be rather dull. I don't go to art forums on the Internet at all.

However I do find the technical and equipment aspects to make very interesting discussion. We can hang actual numbers on tangible things as well as being subjective in our comparisons.

Perhaps other forum members feel the same, and what we discuss here doesn't diminish our love of photography or taking pictures, it just reflects what we'd rather talk about.

Great photo, and I agree with the C&C above, but it really grabbed my attention.

How did you get a K7 sensor so dusty so fast? Do you shoot mostly with a bunch of prime lenses?

Well, I just had to laugh at the bike! But I can do that 'cos in Australia our cities are getting to over 43 degrees at the moment (e.g. Melbourne yesterday).

The busy patterns and colours in No 3 are pretty good, but No1 shows an outstanding eye for a shot -- if the road had been straight it would've been "Ho hum, yep, seen that before," but the angled bend and exactly where you stood on the bridge to get the photo, not to mention the perfectly placed building at the end, make this the pick of the bunch by quite a margin. Nice work, Stefan.

Aah, film. You have to have shot with it to understand! Nowadays, it just seems... well, I hesitate to say easier, 'cos even with digital I still take crappy photos, but it is certainly a different experience.

But what I really miss is the satisfying sound a film SLR made when pressing the shutter button, I guess it must have been the additional noise of the shutter curtains.

Thanks for the nice Chicago reminiscences, anyway.

I don't even mind the power lines. I think they are an element of this photo that doesn't detract from the dramatic sky you've captured, and the ethereal colour of the trees and grass. Nice work!

Some damn fine machinery there, Carl. I was surprised how well the B&W treatment of the third photo worked; that looks great. No. 4 is the pick of the bunch, though.
