A couple of days ago I took this photo of The Moon using my KP with pixel shift enabled, the resulting DNG file was a not inconsiderable 110MB in size. The KP was attached to an Altair Astro Lightwave 72mm ED-R refractor telescope mounted on an Skywatcher EQ5 Synscan mount, the manual exposure was 1/125sec at ISO100, 0EV. This was my first attempt at using my KP's pixel shift through a telescope, it seems to have worked. :)

Using KP: Raw vs JPG?

I'll just add to what others have said.

Color, sharpness, etc. are applied and permanently 'baked in' with jpeg. When shooting raw, the settings don't impact the actual raw sensor data but they are recorded in the raw file. Most software will use those as a starting point when you first open the image. (for example, if your white balance was wrong it would look wrong in Lightroom at first, but be easy to fix.)

Highlight protection works by underexposing 1 stop and brightening the jpeg, so all the raw images taken with it enabled would need a 1 stop increase to reach 'correct' exposure ('correct' as decided by the camera's meter).

If you have a large enough memory card you can just shoot RAW +JPEG. If you're happy with the jpegs just delete the raw files when you get home, but you'll have the raw for post processing in case things don't come out quite right.

I'd also suggest trying the Natural color setting. On my K-3 Natural gives colors closest to what I've remember in person. (Bright overemphasized red/orange to much for my taste, especially in wood tones.)

For your K-50 I suggest getting an AA adapter and using Eneloops Pro, I get super long battery life with them.

A cropped photo of a Mallard, and a couple of a local rugby game. I'm finding photographing people playing sports is quite interesting. The mallard photo wont load because I have already posted it in another thread.

Actually yes, you can for the body but not for the lens. Use the Check Shutter Count page on this site.

The body's Serial # will be the field labeled SerialNumber (not InternalSerialNumber)

I was reminded recently of a little story of the rare Pentax owner in a club I once attended. He was out with a group of other photographers with their 'superior' cameras. They all got splashed with mud when a car speed past them. Panic all round, except, and you probably know where this is going, the Pentax owner (k-5) casually tipped his bottle of water over his camera to wash it clean and then got on with watching the others panic. There was a stunned silence amongst the group. I can only imagine the inner pleasure he took in this.

I find those kind of comments from other photographers annoying...it's hard to not feel it's a condescending judgement.

Imagine the comments I get with my Pentax 645 MF film!!! "Do they still make film?" (No, I'm just posing with this to make conversation.) "What IS that????" (It's a radar gun catching speeding photons.) "Why is it SO large?" (Actually this is MEDIUM format...you want to see large?). And then of course the usual boast about a Hasselblad, Rollei, Bronica, or Mamiya. (Yeah, I guess they're all hiding in a climate controlled studio or in a display case....).

I don't consider myself a Pentax elitist (because I recognize the pros and cons of other brands) but I do appreciate the specialness of the gear and the photographers that know it.

Welcome to the clubhouse!

The K50 and that two lens set is a good start. I still use the 55-300. Technically it's my second 55-300. The first one was damaged in a fall and fixed for not too much money. Then it was damaged again in an incident with a deer and the dogs, and not repaired. It's a decent lens, just stop it down to f8 or so if you have the light. And don't compare it to pictures taken with $10K telephoto lenses! It's very portable, though, which has its own advantages.

You'll have fun learning the new system, DSLRs now are just amazingly good.
