Pentax Optio W 90- good ?

Actually... the SR is "pixel tracking" so it sounds like it doesn't use an accelerometer... still - my 6 year old IXUS has one for camera orientation... seems bizarre that the W90 wouldn't :(

Pentax Optio W 90- good ?

A question for other W90 owners...

I've just noticed that on importing to iPhoto or Aperture, that the photos don't automatically rotate when in portrait mode... photos taken on the K7 are auto rotated perfectly.

In fact, now that I look.. even on the camera display the portrait mode shots still display in landscape..

Looking at the exif data.. 2 pics taken with the same orientation on the K7 and W90 have different data for "Image Orientation".

I can't see any settings to turn auto-rotation on or off... surely they didn't leave the function out of the camera altogether? It has SR so I assume it has an accelerometer.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Cheers,

Nick

Yeah.. I was just surprised how un-blurred some of them are... I guess as long as they're reasonably still, the scale of their movement within the frame would only result in them being slightly blurred.

Given you now have them on the back foot... it would be interesting if you could use the opportunity to get a categorical answer out of Pentax as to

a) their knowledge of the root cause of the problem with SDM
b) what, if anything has been changed in the design to fix it
c) whether repaired lenses actually do get an upgraded SDM design

In Australia you only get charged duty if the amount to be charged is over $50, which corresponds to a total declared value (ie including shipping) of about $1000.

I went through the exact same exercise 6-7 months ago.

I settled on the DA70 at the time.. it was my first Pentax glass and I was instantly hooked by the improvement over the Sigma zoom it replaced*.

I got some great photos, however I found that 70mm was a bit long for indoor shooting a newborn, and also that I could have used a little faster than f/2.4 (our daughter was born in Autumn, and we live in the Adelaide Hills, so for the first few months of her life, the blinds were drawn to keep the heat in, so the light was not great).

I borrowed an M 50/1.7 and got some nice pics with this too, but found the manual focus (or my slowness using it) was a problem (I also hadn't discovered "Catch In Focus" mode). Also, even at 50mm I found if she was lying on the bed, I had to stand on the bed to get most of her in the frame, so I reckon the 40 is probably just right.

I also tried the flash (AF540FGZ, bounced), but it still seemed to startle her, so I tried to stick to natural light.

*Since then LBA has hit me hard :)

JSherman999 and his damn 15mm limited mind control thread was the start, and then those DA*16-50 and DA*50-135 "Show us what it can do" threads pushed me over the edge..

I sold the 2 kit lenses and the DA70, and now have a DA*55/1.4 for nice indoor low light work and nice bokeh, a DA*16-50 and a DA*50-135... oh, and a significantly lighter wallet.

Here are a few examples :

DA70 @ f/2.4 1/60 (1 week old)
Attachment 73346

M 50 @ f/1.7 1/40 (3 months old - standing on bed, only light source was a 75W bulb overhead)
Attachment 73349

DA*55 @ f/1.4 1/50 (4 months old)
Attachment 73347

DA*16-50 @ 50mm f/2.8 1/50 (6 months old)
Attachment 73348

Help me choose a 3 lens setup for overseas trip!

Personally I think the lens-swapping you would encounter with a 3-prime setup would be annoying... I guess it depends on whether photography is the main aim of your trip, and the level of patience of your travelling companions (if any).

I would definitely take the 15 as it's so small and gives fabulous results, but I would pair it with a good zoom.

The last 2 OS trips I've done with a Sigma 18-200.... the focal length range is great, but I was never happy with the IQ. I've since upgraded to a DA*16-50 and DA*50-135, and the IQ is stunning, but these make quite a heavy package.

Also, have you looked into the possibility of buying a new lens in Japan? With the price of Pentax gear in Australia it's likely to be cheaper there.

Does anyone know if these are actually currently in production, or whether this is just "new old stock" that has popped up?

Just wondering if I should snap one up...

I recently upgraded from the 18-55 kit lens which came with the K7 to the DA*16-50 and haven't regretted it for a second..

These seem to hold their value reasonably well too.. selling here second or third-hand for only a hundred or so less than new, so even if you're unsure about spending the money on better Pentax glass instead of switching camps, you probably won't lose out much if you still decide to do so.

My bet though is that having experienced the DA*16-50 you won't switch :)

Where do Australians buy their NEW lenses from?

I guess things can change, and sadly you can come across those types anywhere... but I had quite a different experience when I was looking for the K7 back in April. They were about the only shop in the city centre that had any Pentax dslr gear on display.. They didn't have the K7 but they were friendly enough when I asked about it and quite happy to deal, even when i pointed out that their "special" advertised price on the K7 wasn't that special.

Their current catalog even has a page dedicated to Pentax.

I'd been waiting until the dollar went back above US$0.90, and it did recently, so I gave this a try.

I rang Ted's in Rundle St where I bought my K7 and had had good service. I related the story in Grimmus' post and the girl on the phone suggested I email their Pro/Govt sales rep, Simon.

I took a pdf of the printout from my cart at Adorama, showing their prices for the DA* 16-50, DA* 50-135, and DA* 55, related the story in Grimmus' post, as well as pointing out the claim on CR Kennedy's website about being globally competitive.

About half an hour later I had a very friendly call from CR Kennedy, asking for some more info, and then a couple of days later I got an email from Simon, with prices for all three which were between 15 and 20% better than the best price I could find locally.

I was pretty happy with this, but I asked if they could do better if I bought all three (hey - if you don't ask you never know), and while they said they couldn't, they did say that CRK had offered to throw in a Vanguard case!

They couldn't *match* the Adorama prices, but they got close, and I'm happy to pay the extra to look after the local guy (although they're probably not making much on it), and for the local warranty, so I've got all three on order :D (my wife is hoping this will keep my LBA at bay for a few years).

Interestingly in my case, they said all the lenses would be ex-stock, so I don't know if this means Pentax Japan didn't come to the party as in Grimmus' experience. He also said that Adorama's prices were shaking things up a bit lately, so maybe CRK can start to use this to negotiate a bit of a better deal for us Aussies.

Anyway, kudos to Ted's for going the extra mile and kudos to CR Kennedy for looking after their customers, and to both of them for the friendly way they went about it... the whole experience for me was surprisingly refreshing.... last time I tried to get another big camera store in Rundle St to get closer to an internet price I had a much less friendly reception (and I've never been back as a result).

I've bought the last few new lenses from Adorama. Even with shipping, most of them for less than half the price DCW or other local suppliers were selling the same thing for.

Bodies are a different story.. the markup doesn't seem to be quite so insane. I bought the K7 from the local Ted's... after they came to the party it wasn't that much different to the going rate in the US when taking the exchange rate and delivery into account.

The comment on CR Kennedy's site (linked to by tsangpo) is interesting... it's hard to see how they can claim the local prices on Pentax glass are "globally competitive", when a DA15 limited from Adorama is AUD$1350 delivered.

Maybe it's old stock, or stock purchased at a less favourable exchange rate, but even that can't account for such a vast difference.

I'd really *like* to support the local guy, but not by that much.

What lens are you looking for?

Thanks for that :) I wasn't trying to suggest they couldn't be found at all... just that the "bigger" volume places haven't had stock for a while. My theory is that what's still out there is "old" stock, which is one of the reasons I'm reluctant to buy from local (Australian) suppliers... they probably don't move much so what stock they have would most likely have been imported pre- any SDM improvement (not to mentioned purchased at a much less favourable exchange rate).

I've been eyeing this off for a while now, but it's been out of stock at both Adorama and B&H for ages....

Anyone know why this might be?

Pure speculation... But wondering if maybe there are supply problems... perhaps due to a design change in the SDM?

Here's (what I thought was) an interesting scene I noticed one morning this week while eating my toast...

Not super sharp (possibly hand holding at 1/15 or trying to focus on the reflection in the not quite mirror finish anymore frypan lid)... but some nice light and colour (I thought).

Any critique welcome.

I'm tossing up the next purchase...

I chose the DA70 Ltd (which I also got from Adorama) over the DA*55 f/1.8 because of all the talk of SDM problems.
Now I'm torn between the DA15 Ltd (also after reading the DA15 controls my mind thread), the DA* 16-55, or a K7 with the kit lens (just been through the Kit Lens Club thread and there are some really fantastic shots there).
