Q-s1 discontinued. The end of Q?

I hope they make a Q8.

- Same 1/1.7" sensor size. It won't make financial sense to make a larger sensor version, as they'd have to design a whole new line of lenses, which is quite expensive.
- Skip the LCD altogether, and give it an EVF. However, the casual shooters that like it so well in Japan may not like this, so I don't think that's gonna happen.
- Or maybe a shoe-mounted EVF?
- Have the built-in flash bounce-able. Redesign the mechanism to make it bounce, instead of to put it so far from the lens. If it bounces, it doesn't matter if it's close to the lens, and red eye is quite easy to remove in software now.
- Finish the tele macro lens already!
- Give us a fast prime wide already!
- Give us a proper super-tele zoom already! 200-800 (equiv) f/4 maybe?
- Go back to the ergonomic design of the Q7, instead of trying to make it look like a tiny Leica.
- Have it be able to shoot raw in more modes
- Stop trying to rape us on accessories; sell the Q system bag separately at a fair price.

Just visited this thread thanks to your suggestion in the DPReview Pentax Compact Camera subforum. I was a little nervous about learning ANOTHER software, but decided to go for it. I just spent a bunch of money on DxO, but was so disappointed that they don't support the Q...

So I just got the latest 64-bit version of the software, installed all the camera files from your top post, and also the film simulations.

One thing I like in DxO that RawTherapee doesn't have is the content-specific help buttons. That shortened my learning curve right down for DxO.

OK, now it's off to shoot some raw in the Q7 and she how she goes!

Thanks for posting and maintaining this thread, Squirrel.

Q7 vs. MX-1 Image quality?

A couple points in reply:

1) Pentax didn't develop the MX-1 lens, Olympus did. It came right from the XZ-1 and -2. By the time it is adapted for mechanical zoom, it would be quite big on a Q body. I agree though, if they could make it happen, a 28-112 f/1.8-2.5 would be an AWESOME lens for the Q. It would totally replace the 02 Standard Zoom on my Q...

2) If you want an MX-1, but with a hot shoe, get an Olympus XZ-2. Yeah, you'll have to give up the MX styling and materials, but Olympus build quality is very good too.

3) +1 on the hot shoe. It is quite a useful feature. In fact, I think the industry is ready for a miniaturized hot shoe for compact cameras. It is often the size of the camera body that precludes a hot shoe. Just like Apple has miniaturized their connector, it is time for this to happen to camera hot shoes as well.

Sunny16, that was a great post, but you didn't really answer the question.

If you compare the output from a Q7 or Q-S1 to that of an MX-1 at several focal lengths, for example 28mm, 50mm, and 80mm, how do they compare? Maybe even add 110mm (with the Q having the 06 tele zoom).

Q7 vs. MX-1 Image quality?

I was reading the Conclusion page on the Q7 review, and was thinking of this bit:

But what's the point of all this, one might ask? After all, there exist similarly-priced fixed-lens compacts with better image quality (i.e. the Sony RX100, Ricoh GR, or even the Pentax MX-1)

Read more at: Pentax Q7 Review - Conclusion | Reviews

What was the reviewer comparing to the MX-1 here? Kit zoom?

I'm wondering if that comment applies to all native Q lenses or just the kit zoom and toy lenses. Is the MX-1 lens THAT much better than all the Q lenses? Or is there something inherent to the body or sensor that makes the MX-1 better.

I've only had the chance to shoot with my Q7 a few times, so I can't compare using my own experience yet.

I'd be curious to hear how the image from a Q7 or Q-S1 with the 01 Prime lens compares to the MX-1 at the same focal length.

My MX-1 photos - first steps

Tomek, those are maybe the best photos I've ever seen from an MX-1. Sorry to read you lost yours.

I felt a little sentimental looking at them, as I went to Zamosc with my ex-wife several years back. (when some of the buildings in the city center were under construction) There is a busy road inside that old fortress wall. I crossed it illegally (jay-walked) across that street and almost got flattened. I'll never do that again, in Europe. The food there was great and the Polish people are friendly. It was rainy and gloomy when I went there.

As for an MX-2, I'm with you there. I think the closest thing there is to an MX-1 is an Olympus XZ-2. The Olympus XZ-1, XZ-2, and Pentax MX-1 all use the same lens; original design was by Olympus, I believe.

As a replacement, you might also consider a Pentax Q7 or Q-S1.

Vietnam era, eh? Yep, that's older than me, but it was from the heyday of mechanical cameras.

My name is Jeremy. My first SLR was a Pentax K1000 SE in about 1995. I worked at camera stores and went to school (electronics engineering technology) until 1997.

These days, I'm shooting Pentax (Q7, MX-1) and Panasonic. (Lumix FZ1000)

I'm not too "serious" as you can tell by my fleet; I haven't got much time due to family and work sucking up most of it. So I mostly just try to take better family pictures than the average person. I favor B&W pretty heavily these days for people pictures.

I wish Pentax would make something on the order of the FZ1000 and update the MX-1, but it seems they spent their whole R&D budget on the K-1. :hmm:

I look forward to meeting you all.

If anyone local wants to meet up (even downtown) for tea and maybe some street shooting, drop me a line!
