AF540fgz zoom noise Vs Metz 58

Hi all, this is a question for anyone who owns or has had experience with both the Pentax AF-540FGZ as well as the Metz 58 AF-1: Which flash is louder while zooming?

Now that I shoot with the stealthy K-7 and whispering SDM lenses, I find that I am getting very irritated by the zoom noise made by the AF-540 flash, especially during speeches etc that the flash makes a fairly noticeable racket when everyone in the room is silent and listening to a speaker who is not "campaign shouting like a southern diplomat."

Anyway, long story short: is the Metz any quieter? I haven't yet found one to try in-store, but I will try harder and try both my 540 and a Metz on in the store. In the meanwhile, I'd love to hear members' opinions on this subject.

Yep, I know exactly what you're talking about. The current workhorse, my three year old Macbook Pro has me spoiled.

About 1080p uncompressed footage... what do you find is preventing you from doing so? HDD speed? Or is it lack of RAM?

Yes... I've been pondering the hackintosh route myself, for $2000 I can build myself a monster of a machine. My only concern is that one day Apple will up and introduce a measure that makes OSX impossible to install on non-Apple hardware, after which I'll be left with a very fast machine that runs only Windows and Linux anymore; none of which run Final Cut Pro.

Agreed, it's so very hard to let go of the flexibility my laptop gives me, want to work elsewhere? Pack up and go! No such thing with a desktop.

Heh, I suppose I should get on that then! 200 SAMSUNG FLASH DRIVES! Sounds like a movie by Frank Zappa...

Anyway, I guess the advice I was interested in is whether the Macbook Pro will be impossibly limiting for video editing... apparently not; from responses here and reading I did on google, it's main drawback is less speed and less future expansion - something I already knew.

Hi all, would like to get an opinion of the resident video gurus about a purchase decision.

I'm getting close to buying a new workstation computer and want it to be a good video editing rig. Traditionally I've only considered my image (RAW) processing and editing needs, the ability to batch process hundreds of files in a reasonable amount of time, but now I want to buy something that would let me comfortably handle light to relatively heavy video editing and processing as well.

My choices boil down to one of the following two:

1. A quad core Mac Pro with a 24" Dell, HP or Samsung display.
2. A 15" Macbook Pro with a 24" display like above.

Whatever I end up with will have the maximum RAM of 8GB and I will also probably go with a good SSD for the main drive and cheaper traditional drives for bulk storage.

Now I know that the desktop Mac Pro will be a better choice as a video editing rig running Final Cut Pro... but I wonder, in the long run (my main computers go 3-5 years before I upgrade), how much will I be losing out on if I went with the laptop instead, for portability reasons?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I don't quite agree. Nokia has the words "Carl Zeiss" on their cellphone optics and they are getting clobbered by the iPhone and the Blackberry horde, Pentax won't even get noticed save for by existing users of Pentax products and that is *not* a very big number, especially not in the cellphone world.

Beg your pardon?

G11 is strength, LX3 is strength, GR Digital III is strength, S90 is also strength; Pentax compact is anything but!

They had a good thing going with the waterproof cameras right up until the W60, the 80 seems to be a step backwards.

Any opinions on the Nikon D200?

I have a lot of experience with the D200, it's a nice camera but I wouldn't recommend buying one now, it has some flaws that were removed in the D300. I'd wait until the D300s are in wide circulation and then get a D300.

D200 still has some hideous noise in anything above ISO 640. It has one of the worst vertical grip designs I've ever seen, the battery compartment door on the grip is very prone to breaking and when you hold the camera in portrait mode using the grip the thumb will NOT be able to reach the 4-way controller. In order to zoom into an image you have to press a 2 or 3 button combination, and a few other problems I can't recall right now. These problems are gone now in the D300.

Yeah, this little camera interests me as well.

I *almost* got an LX3 about a year ago, but decided to wait. The LX3 is just barely pocket size, it fits in very tightly in most pockets, while this new S90 seems like it's the perfect compromise.

Looking forward to trying this little gem out to see if I will finally settle with my first compact digital camera since I started doing photography.

Great shooting, makes me want to organize a studio shoot right now! I think the "cold studio" effect goes pretty well with the theme of the hat. :-D

Amazing images, the first few seem to have been done with a very large softbox... was it an octagon?

The saturation and crispness is amazing, as mentioned in an earlier post, "executed to perfection"!

Cheers

Fantastic images, Marc! They have a great "pop" to them and the detail is very fine indeed.

May I ask how you upsized them? I have my own way of doing it, but am curious about your method.

Yeah, most ultra-wides, especially primes, have a relatively small minimum focus distance; my 14mm has a minimum focus distance of 17cm.

Thanks for putting it back up, Michael.

Nice shot! I was very interested in seeing just such an image from the 15mm limited. My DA14 is great but can be a little big, so I've been looking at the 15mm.

Cheers!
