Anybody still interested in the new lens? I had a chance to play around with a sample yesterday - there was a fair in Duisburg where Ricoh/Pentax provided the 70-200/2.8 along with the 150-450 and the 645Z complete with the 28-45/4.5 (a dream). Anyway, I posted some sample photos in a German forum and you can find them here Kleines UT Foto+Adventure in Duisburg - m. Bilder 70-200/2.8 • Pentaxians. The ones with the 70-200/2.8 are ## 10 and 15-18. I was quite impressed by the speed and the quality wide open even though the conditions were far from perfect, the shots were taken inside the exhibition hall, a former industrial building with bad lighting.

For me shot #15 shows quite nicely how well corrected the lens is for shooting into the light - this applies also to the 150-450 as you can see in shots ##3-7. I tested it along with the 70-200 and both showed absolutely no tendency for flare, even when shooting directly into bright halogen spots. Bokeh also looks very nice and smooth and I do believe that this will be a winner once it really does hit the shelves!

Here https://www.flickr.com/photos/128950781@N08/with/16693775775/ are some shots with both lenses and with the lenses with TK, according to a comment in a German forum the AF works fine with the 1.4 TK onboth lenses.

If somebody already posted the link - sorry!

Is the DFA 150-450mm lens overpriced or unappealing in your opinion?

Bob Atkins did a test on that once and found no difference between SR in lens or body. The only advantage would be a stabilised pic in the viewfinder. I use my 250-600 with TCs without problems with the SR in body - and I dont mind it not being stabilised before the click.

Well the guy said something about the fact that SDM uses a kind of gearbox vs. the ring motor in use for USM or HSM made it less powerful and hence slower and on top of that it was less reliable to start with - I#m not a technical geek so I am just rephrasing what he said, but to me it made sense.

When you consider that the by far most expensive Pentax APS-C lens - the 560 - currently is also sporting a DC-drive it would make sense to me. It is also reported to be silent enough and this is all I expect from an AF-motor, reliability, speed and little noise. (SDM has let me down on my 200* DA).

Well, one of the staff members went quite into detail that SDM as such might not be around much longer. Something to do with it not being a true ring-motor. He was pretty certain that the new lenses wouldn't have SDM. Anyway - the DC-drive in the 18-135 is pretty fast.

Well, they hinted at FF - not sure whether that was just to keep some of us happy. But for sure it will be a 2.8 and also pretty much for sure it won't have SDM of any flavour but DC. I saw it now for myself and would reckon that it is definitely a 77mm filter thread. I guess one could easily work it out from the picture below.

Still only rumours - the guys from Ricoh didn't want to commit themselves - still: It's supposedly a 70/80-200 at 2.8 and a 135/150-400 at 4-5.6, or knowing Pentax even 5.8 at the longer end. The lenses are supposedly DC-driven - no "revamped" SDM but the dates apart from the 16-85 (end of year) remain open. I compared to existing lenses and these two are really big beasts, so no way could the large aperture Zoom be anything less than a 2.8 and this was confirmed as far as confirmation went that day.

We were allowed behind the scenes but nothing more could be got from the very friendly staff.

Latest news I heard or rather read here Photokina 2014 • Pentaxians :

"Lt. Aussage des Mitarbeiters ein 80 - 200 mit durchgängig 2.8 und ein 100 - 400 ohne Angabe der Lichtstärke." ~ according to a member of staff a 80-200 with constant 2.8 and a 100-400 without any information about the apertures.

A guy from our German Pentaxians Forum went to have a look today and he says it is definitely a 2.8 putting the diameter at a very likely 77mm. I came up with a number close to that comparing the lens cap with the barrel at the front. Tell more - unless Pentax does - after I've been there in person on Friday.

It's over, folks, nobody waits for the second or third day to announce a new product - this would really pi** o** any of the first day's fair visitors. There is and there will be no full-frame this year. The market share of FF is falling in Japan at least, it used to be around 11.something per cent about three years ago and was 8.7 per cent last year. By the way, none of the Sony cameras made it into the top 20 there...

Just look at the lens caps in relation to the front bit - no way is the bigger one the same size as a Tokina 80-400, I had/have one (it's broken) and it is a comparably small lens. I mentioned above that the front diameter of the smaller of the two lenses seems likely to be at 77mm - too big for f4 and what would be the use of a f4 when you have 60-250/4 already?

My main concern with the SDM is that my 200 DA* is rather slow even after it has been revamped after a recent breakdown. Even if reliability might be back speed is definitely not there..

On another issue - going by a comparison of the lens front and the lens cap at the end I would guess the lens diameter on the smaller of the 2 newcomers to be 77mm and the other considerably bigger. That would definitely put it at 2.8 and the other? Any guesses?

Will try to find out more on Friday, but I guess they won't let the cat out of the bag as they haven't done so already. Just hope that they'll feature the DC-drive rather than the revised SDM. I'm not so bothered about in lens OS, quite happy with the in-body solution with my 250-600 and I've yet to see a test which really proves one or the other to be better. A portable long zoom with high quality would be really nice...

Have you ever looked at the Berlebach Mini? Very light and with the flexible head you don't need a ballhead just one of those flasharms. Very light too. Mini-tripod with levelling from Berlebach

I had a chance to shoot with the 560 at a forum-event hosted by two German Pentax-Forums, i.e. Digitalfotonetz and Pentaxians.de. Here are some impressions despite the pretty awful light conditions on the day:

- Build quality is on a very high level, the lens is solidly built, and small touches like the little wheels which make it possible to access the revolving mechanism for the polarizer from the outside of the filter-drawer give a very good impression
- Image quality seemed to be on a par with my 250-600 though the tendency for purple fringing was detectable as you might see in the linked images
- Handholding is definitely an option, the lens is surprisingly light and my shots of the dog and the Cormorants are all handheld, the anti-shake works a treat and the lens balances well when handheld

Over all I would miss the versatility of the zoom and I did not try the lens with TCs so no comment there. The AF is fast and nearly silent, my general impression of the lens was very favorable.

Shot this yesterday from a hide on a nature reserve near Münster in Germany, light was a bit harsh but I was very pleased with the Converter-performance of the F* 250-600.

With me it's the other way round - I don't want the money - well, if you insist... - but I have the lens, the F* 250-600 that is - here it is open at 600mm:
