Silver or black :)

I have one silver lens and don't like it because the body of the lens (and its silver hood!) reflect sunlight into my eyes. Black lenses absorb light.

My Informal Poll

The people I see with DSLRs are almost invariably carrying Canons or Nikons. Once upon a time I met a man on the headland at Bandon, OR, with a red Pentax DSLR and a red kit lens to match. He was very happy with it! And another time, in a hardware store in Boulder, CO, another Pentax user asked me about my K-01.

But so what? I'm happy with my stuff and have no desire to switch!

Sigma 70-300 Zoom

Agree with all the above! It's a really decent long zoom lens. There are sharper ones and faster ones - but not for a hundred bucks! Go for it.

Compare the size of the GX8 to the K-01

The GX8 isn't really a "big beast". It's a M43 camera with a decent grip, like the Olympus OMD EM1. As many Pentaxians have pointed out, the K-01 is an excellent camera. What it lacks (in my opinion) even more than a viewfinder is a decent grip. If only its striking design had included a larger grip (something the M43 manufacturers have also figured out is essential!)

how will FF improve your photography?

FF is just another format. It won't improve my photography abilities (which are unchanged regardless of the machine). It might improve the size of the prints I make, if I start making prints and want to make bigger ones. Let's hope that all those who have been crying out for a FF Pentax pony up the money and buy one when it comes out!

DA12-24 vs DA15 + DA14 + DA21?

The 12-24mm is a great lens. As others have suggested I'd recommend selling the 14mm lens (the 15mm is a little narrower but much lighter and smaller) and getting the zoom. Then you will start thinking about getting the 10-17mm as well!

Calling out to protect European photogrphy rights

"If the opening scene of a show is a wide angle city panorama do the producers have to get approval of every building owner?"

Photographers don't need to ask permission. FAIR USE covers the inclusion of corporate logos and buildings in your film or photograph -- as long as their appearance is incidental. So, if you take and publish a photograph which includes Starbucks and a Shell station, you are within your rights (including a commercial use of the photo or film). But if you focus exclusively on the Starbucks or the Shell, or deliberately disparage their 'trade mark' fair use may not cover you.

Linux Software

Photomatix (the company which makes Photomatix PRO software for HDR) has developed a version for GNU/Linux. You probably need to contact them and ask them for a download since it's still a beta version, I think. In addition to HDR, Photomatix also develops all RAW formats, which Photoshop doesn't. And you can tonemap individual images for that "HDR look".

Poll: A Monochrome Pentax D-SLR! Would you buy it?

I have a K-01 converted to IR by one of the companies that does that.
The IR filter removes almost all traces of colour (there are various filters which
you can chose). So essentially I have a "monochrom" type camera (though
with infrared visuals!) for the cost of the K-01 and the conversion.
Less than $500!

Any linux users around?

Photomatix - the HDR software - is also available for GNU/Linux. It processes all RAW formats (unlike Photoshop) and you can apply various intensities to pull info out of the shadows and highlights. It also does not apply any software "fixes" for specific lenses, so you may end up with more information on the edges of the frame than you'd get from a regular RAW conversion.

If you try Ubuntu and don't like the rather pedestrian "Unity" desktop, try Mint, a very good desktop OS!

Circular polarizer filter

Expensive filters are absolutely NOT the best. I have bought filters by B+W and they are rubbish. Two of them have literally come to pieces. You can buy "Agfa" branded polarizers made in China for a few bucks. So far none of these have fallen apart.

Advantages of FF

If it is true that a FF camera doesn't mean greater print size or better quality prints then what exactly is the advantage? Shallow depth of field is not a quality.

In Japan M4/3 camera and lens sales are increasing; DSLR sales are decreasing. The Q is popular in Japan, but from a photographer's point of view it would be nice to have a Q-sized camera with a 4/3 sensor.

Try Photomatix. It's HDR software but does an amazing job of pulling info out of the shadows and highlights of single shots, and works with all file formats, not just DNG.

If you only shoot portraits, sell the 15mm. It is a great lens, but it's not a portrait lens.

Has 183N used the 10-17mm or the 12-24mm? Both lenses are excellent. If another wide zoom is coming, I would prefer weather sealing over the extra stop.

That Olympus 9-18mm zoom is a smashing lens. It's also the exact equivalent - in 35mm terms - of the Pentax 12-24mm, also excellent. I vote for the 12mm Ltd prime -- and let it be water resistant!

Pentax K-01 Bricked?

Don't buy it if the seller says it's a brick! It's hard to see how the wrong SD card could damage the K-01 (an excellent and sturdy camera) but if the seller says it's a brick, forget about it.
