Variable ND Filter for 49mm Lenses

I'm taking a risk and buying this filter:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008VTILXA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?t...&ie=UTF8&psc=1

Reviews are mixed (different sites), but I really don't see myself using the filter too much. The legacy glass is what I use for my fun stuff. If it doesn't work out, I always have a much higher quality filter that I can use with step up rings until I find something that works well. I'll let you guys know how it works when I get it. Should be here in a week or two.

Hello everyone, Iíve spend the last couple of weeks looking for a variable nd filter for my legacy glass. So far, I havenít been able to find much. I have an 82mm filter that, through the use of a lot of step up rings, I was able to use, but there has to be a better way.

Has anyone found a good nd filter I can use on my 55 f1.8 and 35 f2 lenses?

What's Your Favorite Camera Bag That Looks Nothing Like a Camera Bag?

Hello everyone, the quest for the perfect camera bag continues. At this point, my wife makes fun of me since I now own more bags than she does. What she, and all women (/s), fail to understand is that every bag serves its unique purpose.

I think I'm pretty well covered on the messenger bag end, but I keep looking for a backpack that I can use as an every day bag and another that works great for travel. My big thing is that I want something that doesn't actually look like a camera bag. Currently, I'm using a Northface backpack with an insert and that works pretty well for the most part, but whenever I want to carry around a flash and a extra lens or two, that bag gets pretty tight and uncomfortable.

For every day stuff, I'd love to be able to carry around my laptop (Surface Pro 4), camera (Pentax K1 or Sony A7ii), lenses (24-70, a prime or two), and a flash. For travel, I'd love to carry the same, plus maybe a few other accessories. I don't mind purchasing two different bags if it doesn't break the bank too much.

The military type bags are what have been catching my eye, but I don't have any surplus stores near me and there seems to be a lot of bags out there that have that feel, but probably don't have the quality. I don't want anything too rigid, I already have some bags like that. Anything besides that type of bag that I should look into?

Pentax FA 35 f2 vs Sigma 35 Art 1.4

The more I read up on it, the more my wallet wants the FA 35 and my heart wants the Sigma 35. I would almost exclusively use it on my K-1. Both have a lot of pros and very few cons. My biggest hesitation on the Pentax is the lack of images I've found on full frame. I would imagine it's got to look better on FF than it does on APS-C. f2 is something I can live with (especially for $600+ less). I think my other concern is the age of the Pentax lens.

I do have the DFA 24-70. I wonder if the image quality of that lens is as good (or good enough) as compared to the FA 35. At this point, I think it's the lack of images from the FA 35 that is holding me back. The manual aperture control is also incredibly appealing because I would also like to occasionally use it on my Sony A7ii. There is no way I can justify buying a Sony FE lens at those ridiculous prices.

Pentax FA 35 f2 vs Sigma 35 Art 1.4

I want the unicorn 35mm. Fast, light, amazing optical quality, ff, and cheap.

Realistically, I'm looking for something fast with great optical quality to use on FF. I also plan on using it, if possible, on my Sony A7ii. That's my main reason for considering the FA, but I think it's too much of a trade off...

I'm currently on the fence about getting one of these two lenses. Obviously, in regards to price, they are in two different worlds, but are they in different classes in regards to quality?

The Sigma is obviously faster, newer, and is reported to have much better image quality. It's also bigger and has no physical aperture control.

The Pentax is lighter, slower, smaller, and isn't reported to have the image quality of the Sigma.

Has anyone tested these two together? I've debated the Sigma for a while, but I don't know if the extra $600 is truly worth it. I imagine it is, but I'm really curious to know what others think and have experienced.

Been thinking about visiting Home Depot to see if they have something that will work. That might be the cheapest solution. Thanks!

Mefoto Roadtrip Replacement Clamp

I purchased a Mefoto Roadtrip Aluminum Tripod a couple of years ago. It's a pretty good tripod that I use a lot more frequently than my Manfrotto tripod. Recently, on a hiking trip, the knob that tightens the clamp fell off. I contacted Mefoto and I was told that the Benro QRC50 was my only option to fix it. It costs about 55 (plus tax and shipping). Is that really my only option? Has anyone else found any other solutions to problems like this?

My concern with purchasing the clamp is that for the price, I might be able to get something just as good (or better) for the same price or even cheaper. I was also debating whether it might just be a better option to bite the bullet and buy a better travel tripod (maybe something carbon fiber). I'm still in the debating stages so nothing is really set yet, but I would love to hear your suggestions.

Thanks!

Suggestions Needed - Taking a Photography Trip Up & Down California

Some unexpected free time has popped up and I'm finally going to do something I've been wanting to do for years now. In a couple of weeks, I'll be driving up and down California in the hopes of having some awesome experiences. As much as I've tried to plan this out, there are just too many things I can do. I'm from California and know San Diego and Palm Springs pretty well (for someone who's not from those areas, at least), so I'm pretty much looking for suggestions to cool places. I really don't have any preferences. I plan on doing street photography (which I'm not that great at), portrait photography (a little better in that area), landscape photography (decent at that), and hopefully, some astrophotography (never done it before.)

I'll be keeping my kit as light as possible. Body, a zoom, and a couple of primes. Just enough to be able to pull off my photography goals.

The only place I know I have to go to is Joshua Tree. Other than that, I don't really know where I should prioritize. I don't have a problem driving all the way up to San Francisco, or even higher. The drive just has to be worth it.

Here are my goals:
1) Have some awesome experiences
2) Take some awesome pictures
3) Meet some cool people along the way

Let me know if anyone has any suggestions for me. Thanks!

Mastin Labs Presets

I recently happened upon Mastin Labs Presets. They look great, but are really expensive. Does anyone have any experience with them? From reviews I've read, they're comparable, if not better, than VSCO presets.

I have to admit that I'm actually kind of curious about them, but I don't know about spending $400 to get their entire line. Any thoughts?

Brought it into Lightroom. Brought the exposure up. Temp at 5200. Raised contrast, shadows. Brought down highlights. Added a radial filter to brighten her face. Added an adjustment layer with increased warmth to fake sun from top left. A bit of dehaze. Sharpening. Can't remember what else. Cropped. It was fun to work with someone else's images.

Wow, I need to step up my game. My images aren't that clean at 200 ISO. I would love to know your editing process to clean that up so much. If you don't mind me asking, besides the K-1, what equipment and settings did you use?

Ok, so I would just stack the godox trigger on top of the cactus trigger and we're good to go? Would you recommend one version over the other? I'm assuming ttl wouldn't work?

The Godox AD200 HSS flashes look really interesting and I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to try to make the HSS function work with Pentax cameras (specifically the K1)?

I know they can be triggered optically, but it appears as though they lack a hotshoe so using a Cactus V6ii is out of the question. They only seem to operate off of a 2.4G signal. Godox doesn't seem to make a universal trigger, so I don't know if it's even possible, but it would be awesome if there was a way.

Attaching a Plastic Mount Speedlite on a Hot Shoe Flash Bracket

The cover just seems to protect it when not in use. I guess being careful should be enough. The plastic part just feels really flimsy on this particular flash. If I can't find an alternative, I'll just take the risk.

Pretty much, I want to get a flash with one of these:

I feel like if I try to attach it, it'll break the mount on the flash. Does anyone have any solutions?

Large Group Posing - Recommendations Needed

Hello everyone, I was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. I'm looking for charts/guides/cheat sheets on posing large groups. I could have sworn that years ago, I stumbled upon a resource on posing large groups (or maybe it was just a dream). I can't remember the exact details, but it was something along the lines of a guide on posing people depending on the amount of people in the group. For example, if it was seven people, you might do two rows with three in the front and four the back. Or, three rows and you would do two-two-three. Something along those lines. Does anyone have, or know of anything out there that could help me? I'll be photographing large groups for the school I work for in a couple of days (was just told about it today) and was hoping to get as much help as I could.

Anything is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I watched a lot of reviews on this adapter and while it looks pretty cool, there seem to be a lot of issues with it. It looks like something I will definitely buy when it hits second generation. For now, it's back to deciding on whether or not I want the 55 1.8 over the 50 1.8. The lens looks tempting, but I'm still not sure if it's worth the $800 premium. LBA is a hell of a drug.

How Do You White Balance?
Posted By reivax

I've read/seen a lot of stuff on this and the results sometimes tend to contradict with one another. I'm not asking about using a device that will help you set your white balance (but any advice on that would also be greatly appreciated), I'm referring more to the "Should I set it to auto white balance and fix later? Or set a white balance and adjust later?" I've heard setting a white balance doesn't really matter because you can always fix it later. Do you agree?

How do you deal with this in the following situations?

1) Staying in one place where the light temperature does not change
2) Moving from room to room
3) Inside to outside (artificial to natural)
4) Any other situations I'm not considering?

Does anyone manually set/readjust their white balance in every situation? If so, tips?
