I usually have, but This time its ok, besides all those flashes works well when connected straight to camera hot shoe. Just got new usb wire and everything is fine I can do upgrade finally. I tell you what I do.... will send one of the unist to the seller (because its old with old type of hot shoe) and I will buy another two from someone else making sure its very recent units.... if it will not work I'll ask the cactus community.

you see... not necessarily, people usually can't be bother so much....

Thank you so much for your help guys

yes you right, that's why I can't use ir transmitter + light meter with nikon either, but the problem still remains - picture are still darker compared to traditional manual mode, I have used seconic just now when I was asked to determine what is the difference between exposures with full manual controll on the flash and on cactus. Initially I have detected the problem only via inspecting the photos on the camera screen. But we seems to going somewhere.... it looks like at least with nikon, only ittl pre-flash contributes to the exposure... That's looks like huge delay, can I correct it through the cactus delay/relay correction or this feature is only for power synch?

So I'v repeated test with eyeballing inspection it looks like when I set flash to manual 1/4 and fire, the exposure is the same when I set the flash to p-ttl and cactus to 1/1 of power.

it does if you can call as working situation where you get 1/4 of power instead of 1/1 with Pentax and 1/32 power with nikon. If I connect nissin with nikon mount and use it with Pentax body am getting 1/4 of the power.

yes it does and it fallows as i change it on the transmitter

it does fallows as i change it on the transmitter the same about zoom and aux af light also works

just checked with seconic and yes it is a exact much so regardless the flash is triggered by transceiver test button or camera shutter release it gives the same output. Checked how much power I have lost compared to setting the flash to manual and its double the aperture, hence if I set on cactus 1/1 of power it gives 1/4 output of the flash.

and yes it does work with exactly same results more than three quarter of the flash power is being lost

it does recognise nissin flash but not pentax since its metz

this is something I know from the beginning.

I did factory default reset already two days ago, and setting it up is pretty simple:

triggering unit: menu, camera & flash setup, camera system pentax, flash system pentax, custom setting off, flash profile metz 50-af1
receiver unit: menu, flash setup, flas system pentax, flash profile metz 50af-1
thats it

no there are others but they aren't available, besides just checked nikon and other flash nissin mg8000 and situation is the same: huge underexposure, everything's works, zoom, power level indicator follows, aux light, and I got 1/32 power of the flash when I set 1/1 on the cactus trigger so its much worse then with pentax.

yes man, its exactly whats happens, but the power output is always proportionally lower than if I set flash power on the flash itself.

So many problem for so much money, godox that is less than half the price, just relesed cross branding firmware so it probably will be a way to go....

thought about it but the level of conversation is really low there, its in style:
- my cactus doesn't work
- so perhaps you should turn it on it might help
- o men you are genius didn't thought about it...

YES YES YES and the same happens with nikon setup (d800 and nissin 866II which is listed as compatible) I am not very interested in PTTL automatic flash mode, or iTTL, What I am after is manual power control 1/129, 1/64, 1/32 etc, with hss from the cactus unit attached to the camera and cross branding. Once I set everything up the output is around half the power of the power given by flash set manually (via cactus v4) Its worse in nikon setup - the flash contribution is barely visible. And to avoid confusion camera shutter is set to non hss range, like 1/125s.

no its really gold plated

Yes, I did it before we start chatting here, tried different metz profiles as well

no I don't, only output on my camera screen.... to asses exposure - if you would like to I can measure the difference in ev if it would help with anything.

WE'v got serious terminology issues here....

---------- Post added 05-25-2018 at 01:03 PM ----------

there is only one firmware available for this model with pentax mount

---------- Post added 05-25-2018 at 01:06 PM ----------

that was the most confusing part of the manual for me (page 17) it doesn't clearly say that passthrough refers only to the flash attached to the trigger on top of the camera

p-ttl mode, and in case of metz flash p-ttl hss, one has to change to manual on the flash in case using manual flash mode option on cactus (you have choices: manual flash mode, power mode, passthrough)

---------- Post added 05-24-2018 at 11:10 PM ----------

to be precise with cactus you always use pttl mode apart from situation when you use manual flash mode (then you set desire output on the flash itself that is set to manual mode). P-ttl is being used always when you use power mode (don't get mistaken with manual flash mode) or passthrough. I always use sleep option if it wasn't there i would have to switch the equipment manually very often.

Class A thank you so much for your response, but I don't see any reason why I should use manual mode with the trigger that cost 150 and on the field keep turning everything on and off every time the camera or flash goes to sleep. Probably one or both of my units are broken - or I have compatibility issue. Your advice is like the one to the broken bike owner: if you cannot ride the bike you can always wheel it.

I was interested in cross-branding I know I cannot use Pentax flash with nikon body, thats ok. Can you tell me why after half an hour of setting everything up (I mean the triggering system only) Am getting only barely half the power of my flash with both systems nikon and pentax, where is advertised cross branding.

What you mean manual control? There are three modes: pass through (selected via pressing/holding the menu button), manual selecting power output on the triggering unit attached to the camera, manual control when u set the power at the flash just like with cactus v4 or similar - which one do you refer to as "manual control".

and here you are wrong... its not pass through strict sense at least not with cactus, cactus unit translates signals through I would call it virtual pass through - check it its a fact.

not true only sony is different the only difference is that canon is shortest and nikon the longest they all have same wide dimension 18.5 mm since 70ties belonge to the same standard so they should fit snug, the problem is lack of the locking bolt for pentax.

yes, and it doesn't make any difference compared to auto detect, in both cases there is huge underexposure using manual selection of power at the trigger unit as well as pass-through. Same with nikon setup.

waiting for the new gold plated cable to arrive.

..or maybe since you are in some kind of way related to cactus your units are from different/better sort

... just thought that I refresh topic a little bit... Just bought cactus v6II thinking that I'll be able to use it either for pentax or nikon. To be honest neither works - with pentax it is a little bit better as it gives a little bit less underexposed outcomes - I am talking about "where is the second half of the flash power" situation. Making it to work is a nightmare you have to align contacts very carefully, as the hot shoe doesn't fit snug, its loosened any accidental touch and its misaligned. After you set everything up you have to turn everything off and on until it start to work - funny thing I I'v noticed... if you don't turn everything on and off the connection works with everything like zoom auxiliary light but flash doesn't fire at all. Doesn't matter if you set your receiver to specific flash or just general nikon or pentax system - didn't noticed any difference. Setup I have try it with: cameras: K1 and D800, flashes: Metz52a1 Pentax mount and nissin 866II for nikon the tranciever and receiver was with universal firmware V1.1.013 (Released on 31 Oct 2017) . Didn't manage to do any upgrade as couldn't get it to work with windows 10 or vista - but its probably wires fault. My general conclusion is: its in very early stage of product development - do not buy, its far far from using it professionally. Currently using cactus v4 without any problems and without hss.

Pentax flash on Nikon body?

I have some experience.... been using both of my fgz540 on nikons d3, d700 and d800 but.... on 'nikon camera it worked only in auto mode, not very useful as fgz 540 couldn't fire as low as I usually needed'- auto mode of fgz540 does't allow to go down below more or less half the power of the fgz540, why not use manual mode? Simply those flashgun didn't work when attached to hot shoe of the nikon camera in manual mode just didn't fire at all, had to use wireless triggers (cactus v4) to trigger afgz 540 in manual mode...., hence i got rid of the afgz540 and bought nissin flashes for nikon that works perfectly on both pentax and nikon bodies in manual and auto mode, it wasn't any problem until k1 arrived - pttl flash problems from my k5 was gone and i can use on k1 any dedicated flashgun in pttl mode but i don't have pentax flash guns anymore.. life sucks

normhead i am not physicist - but i can use my imagination without wasting - as i can see now - about 15 minuts of my time to create the examples, and get to the simple conclusion that competition betw. 70mm vs 105mm will always result in 105mm finest details despite that the angle of the optical whole is the same - that's because compacts are so inferior not because "less megapixels". The difference are almost insignificant in some cases especially in order to create images up to 5x7 or even A4 - the six pack for those of you who can determine where is actually the border line between usability apsc vs FF!!!

where they did mess up? i have used the same settings the same sharpening the same lens switched just to crop and ff mode..... nothing has been messed up!!! beside as i have stated before the smaller apperture hole the difference will vanish..... what aperture did they use? f8?

and did you notice famous pentax red colour rendering fine details....? its completely unacceptable.....

Guys this is simple physics its obvious that given the different focal lenght the longer one will always render better - here is simple example d700 and 70-200: 70mm apsc and about 105 on FF (i have adjusted to cover same area): no doubt for me who is the winner:

and normhead the exmples you've submitted aren't crops we are pixel pipping here besides given the size of the pictures you wouldn't tell the difference between my phone and my d800.... its pointless.

unfortunately i can only talk now as i don't have any apsc any more but i still remember shocking discovery when i had k5 and d700 at the same time, the difference was immense.. i thought at first that Pentax lenses are simply inferior to nikon but when i put nikkors on k5 it showed just an opposite..... maybe it was user error maybe the fact that k5 AF system was something.... lets use euphemism: far from what you get use to on the market..... and by the way the only thing that kept me with Pentax was the three FA Limited musketers and 24*..... i know they are on the top....

The real advantage over apsc - IMHO - and it is something that dragged me at first place to FF is much i mean clearly noticeable better image quality, acuity if you like, if you compare the same lenses and apertures. The difference diminish however as you decrease the aperture hole. Long story short with FF you don't have to have superb optics as much as you do with apsc. With cheap lens or with low apertures image will be always better with FF - it doesn't register so many optics flaws as the pixel density is just lower. For example: two lenses FA*24 on apsc and FA35 on FF - i bet..., despite the same angle, image quality will be much better with FA35 and FF and despite the fact that FA*24 is more expensive and better optical quality lens... however on aperture say f5.6 or f4 the difference might be not so obvious as this is the region where both lenses present best image quality (sharpness etc I am not talking about aesthetic depiction here).

Someone can call me crazy but i think Pentax will have hybrid shake reduction - in body stabilization will give about 1.5-2 ev advantage and in lens will give another 2-3 ev: it will be according to pentax policy "where no one was before"

the only sure things we can deduct from announcement on facebook and after seeing two FF lenses prototypes are:
- they work on FF Pentax camera project - physically, there are prototypes, as for camera prototype we can only speculate if there are any or if the pieces are still scattered on the floor or if there is couple of working devices currently under secret testing in area 51.... or the drawings are still in computer memory bank: hasn't been even printed yet.....
- the Pentax stuff, workmen's, development and marketing specialists are fully aware of upcoming FF
- there will be Pentax FF presented - it doesn't imply nota bene if it'll reach the market at all
- there is thousands of people waiting to put a hand on digital Pentax FF camera.... just for entertaining reason - while the number of professional photographers is limited (i'v made a switch two years ago and don't love my current gear as i loved Pentax, its just the tools nothing less nothing more)
- there will be biggest stir in history of Pentax community EVER!!!, ones FF will be released - street riots, colorfull parades, people throwing other brand photographic equipment through the window etc.
this is how i see it.....

According to some other researches (falc lumo could elaborate more) with snr=0.1 the difference betw d700 and k5 is in the range 2-2.5x more dynamic for d700, if you don't take into acc snr, the dynamics of those cameras roughly equals. You know what happens to the image if you apply noise reduction.... ? The more reduction the more reduction in image quality....
