Ahh.. Thanks. These should fix it (all taken with a MC SOLIGOR C/D ZOOM+MACRO 28-200mm F/3.8-5.5 lens on a Pentax K-50 digital SLR camera body) :

The lens looks good to me with regards to sharpness and aberrations (or lack thereof) at various focal lengths. Only a maximum of default sharpening levels were applied, and often the images come out just fine with an absolute minimal amount of sharpening, depending on the subject.

The images taken with close-up filters have definitely convinced me they're more than good enough for what I do. Thanks!

Just picked up one of these: MC SOLIGOR C/D ZOOM+MACRO f=28-200mm Φ72 1:3.8-5.5

I'm entirely new to MF zooms, but thought, at that price, how can anyone go wrong? So far the results are pleasing. Now I'd like to get some deeper technical specifications, dates of manufacture, etc. I've searched the Google high and low but there seems very little info on this lens. Can anyone please post some info. (i.e. number of elements/groups, etc.)?

Some of my samples are visible a couple of replies down. I really don;t have anything to compare them with, and would very much like to read some opinions on its sharpness when compared with other zooms.

Macro "Royal" Close Up Filters

I've been looking at a set of three (1x, 2x, 3x) close up filters to fit on my SMC Pentax-M 50mm f/2 lens and K-50 combo. They are made in Japan, and branded "Royal Close Up Lens." Nothing to be gained searching the Interwebs for Royal. It seems they've been relegated to the dustbins of photographic history. Has anyone used these? Are they the same as, say, using a macro filter?

Using an F-series lens with an 'A' setting on a Pentax dSLR

Dialing in the 'A' setting did the trick. Funny, but I thought the ring was already turned to A, but following advice and pressing the little button at the side of the lens got it all the way there. Kinda silly of me. Ugh. A big thanks to everyone!

The lens in question, a nifty SMC Pentax-F 35-80mm f4-5.6, has been attached to my Pentax K-50 for several days (and will be for several more, weather permitting). I have the lens working properly in Manual mode by following the instructions that came with the camera's manual, and pressing the green button to get through-the-lens metering before every shot. This operation is essentially no different from my fully manual 50mm prime. But on the 35-80mm there are electrical contacts which suggests some kind of data transmission is occurring between lens and camera. So, is it really possible to change the lens' aperture using one of the wheels on the camera body? If so, how?
I've had experience with both DA and M lenses before, but this one seems a bit different from both. For one, the camera's rear LCD shows F-- (just like with an SMC-M), but f5.6 is always written to the EXIF, regardless of the aperture ring setting.

New K-50 owner here

Just dropping in to extend greetings to members of this forum... I'm an owner of a Pentax K-50, and am looking forward to getting to know this superb camera.
The K-50 is not my frst Pentax -- that distinction belongs to the K-30 which I had traded in for another brand's digital mirrorless system -- but after about a year of trying to get used to it, I was feeling a bit let down by the cost sinkhole of accessories, and that it could never outright better the out-of-camera images produced by my old Pentax in spite of its higher Mpixel count. So I jumped back to Pentax where I know the quality is good, the jpegs are to taste (I don't like spending time on post-processing, BTW), and solid, inexpensive lenses abound; in fact, I picked up a K1000 film camera with two vintage lenses: an SMC Pentax-M 50mm f2, and an SMC Pentax-F 35-80mm f4-5.6. that both work flawlessly on my K-50. (I held off on the DA-L kit zoom to maybe pick up a DA 18-135mm in the future).
Anyhoo, a hello to all and looking forward to seeing you around he forums.
