I obviously could have changed the crop, but to be honest, the gun isn't the focus of the image so it didn't occur to me. I make the holsters, so the holster is the main subject and I crop with that in mind.

I will think about that next time.

For those interested, just google "Spotting Scope Window Mount" and you can find all varieties and price ranges -

Missing Focus - K5iis & F*300 - suggestions?

It works with LV about the same, but after spending the morning playing around, I am wondering if much of what I thought was hunting is actually just the AF system doing its job. It definitely still fails to lock occasionally, but a quick press again and it is locked. The other times appear to be the sensitivity of the AF System and it is refocusing at the slightest movement. I definitely need to look into a more stable tripod, and improve my technique when hand holding, but for now I think I'll just consider this user error.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Stationary subjects. I have noticed (occasionally) similar behavior to yours - it will be really close the first time, then hit it again and it locks. I have not seen this when in AFC though - it just keeps hunting. It isn't hunting from infinity to minimum, just hunting in the approximate range of the subject and never locking. With AFC you can hear the screw drive running almost constantly.

All this is from a tripod BTW.

I'll try that tomorrow. The body focuses fine with every other lens though.

When it locks it is perfect. There's just a lot of instances where the focus indicator flashes when it shouldn't.

Purchased a mint F*300mm from ebay seller in Japan. Doesn't look like it was ever mounted, let alone used. Very sharp lens, when it locks focus. I have tried all the focus modes, and followed some of the online troubleshooting guides, but it still fails to lock focus in some instances. Surprisingly, it is often on subjects with higher contrast. Sometimes if I move the focus point to a spot with less contrast it will lock.

I thought it might be the lens, but I mounted it on my K10D and it locks every time, regardless of contrast of the subject. I also have a Katzeye in the K10D, so manual focusing is easier too, although I find this to be one of the easiest lenses to manual focus that I own.

I'm confused why this would be the case. Not a huge deal for me, as it isn't a lens I plan to use for anything but the opportunistic wildlife shot, but I would be a whole lot happier if it worked 100% on the K5iis. I'll likely upgrade that body in the next 18 months, but I could run into this issue with the new body too.

Any thoughts? Similar experiences?

Thanks

Watch the auction sites...I picked up mine for $60 a few months ago. Good to hear that the right ball head will do the job though.

Probably a gimbal...it is HUGE. I use the Manfrotto 393 and it works great with that lens.

I got my membership card today! F*300mm came in from Japan. Bought it off the auction site in "Mint" condition...and it arrived as such. Can barely tell it was ever mounted on a camera, and it looks like it just came out of the factory package. Blew my budget on lenses for the next 12+ months, but I am very pleased so far. The build quality of this lens is phenomenal, the AF is amazingly fast on my K5iis (and not as noisy as I was expecting) and the test images I took are SHARP!

I hope to get a bunch of wildlife pics this fall.

Does a Viewfinder Magnifier help at all? I started many years ago with my dad's old Spotmatic, so I'm not unfamiliar with manual focus, and I also do a lot of glassing with binoculars and a spotting scope.

I am using a Manfrotto that I picked up on eBay on a buy it now with a ambiguous title and description...$60. Wasn't easy to find when I was searching, which was probably why it was still there. I definitely want to upgrade the tripod though...it is a bit shaky if you don't get everything set perfect.

Here in the NE corner of WA we see deer, moose, turkeys, quail and coyotes pretty regularly. The only one that hasn't been right in the yard is the Turkeys, but they are EVERYWHERE.

A young California Quail on lookout in the backyard. Takumar 500mm f/4.5 lens, ISO 200, 1/90 and I believe f11. Used LV to get focused, and luckily the others were feeding below, so he wasn't going anywhere.

I just picked up a Takumar 500mm, f/4.5, M42 screw mount lens. Can't afford a modern version of the lens and have little use for one anyway, but I'm having fun. I have a lot to learn with this lens, but using LV to fine tune the focus is the only way to go. Won't be doing much wildlife, as it would have to sit still far longer than necessary for me to get the shot!

Quick pic of the pooch while trying my hand at getting sharp images. Too bad there was a piece of machinery in the foreground...but it is just practice.

ebay "increase your offer" message

I had that message pop up and entered my offer anyway...it was immediately refused. I let the item go. I hate the auto reply "Offer not accepted" ...often times you get the message unless you are within $5 of the asking price. On those few times when I upped my offer until it was accepted (just to see what they would take), I did not follow through with the purchase. An offer isn't a commitment to bid, so I figured they might get the message that I didn't care for the way they listed their item.

We live in a culdesac, and I was headed out for a quick errand, and she was at the corner, in a neighbors yard. I put the truck in reverse and backed up to the house to run in and grab my camera. When I threw the front door open she was standing no more than 10' away. She was very young, and not at all stressed or agitated. She just wandered around eating whatever she wanted. The tree is the neighbors, and when she was done with that, she walked into their back yard for something different. They didn't even know she was there until I knocked on their door to give them a heads up (they have a 6 year old).

It was a fun experience. We used to see quite a few more around here, but the imported wolf population is exploding and the moose numbers are dropping.

Upgrade Question - Upcoming ASP-C Flagship or K1 Mk ii ?

Really, at this point there isn't anything that I find lacking. I have the FA 50 1.4, FA 35 2.0, FA 43 LTD and a couple film era lenses. To round things out I will be purchasing a Macro later this year (probably a 100 2.8). I do have the DA 18-135 WR as well, but since I won't be getting rid of the K5iis, this combo will still be available any time I need it.

I really couldn't give you a solid reason to upgrade at this point. Mostly a want, but I still want to make the best decision. If the DR and low light ability of the Full Frame sensor is superior, and I don't lose the use of my primary lenses, then I will probably go that route. I don't need the burst speed of the ASP-C, which is currently the only down side I can think of by making the switch to FF.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

I'm not saying there should be more, just likely that they will try to put a higher resolution sensor in it - but that is purely a SWAG. The bigger is better mentality is pretty common with consumers. I've not been hindered by 16MP however.

And yes, I may be trying to talk myself into a new body.
