I have recently bought one of these on easybay for 30 (I would describe it as mint)

Focus ring is very light (almost no friction but it is there) - smooth etc. Optics gin clear.
Taking a few photos wide open at 35, 50 and 70mm I would say I'm very impressed with optical quality.

Even the "macro" (only 1:4) is pretty good - because you're a bit of a distance away, there is quite a deep depth of field even wide open. It's clearly only a "pretend macro" (not being 1:1) but I would say a budding macro guy would get some fun out of it.

[New video Oct 27] New information about upcoming APS-C flagship model

Having had some time to reflect...
Pros = many - AF especially, 1.05 OVF, 12FPS... I don't even need to worry about IQ as it will be stellar.

Cons= this video will persuade precisely zero non pentaxians to buy a pentax... the video is basically "when you take a picture with a dslr you see it with your eyes, with qualities that cannot be measured with numbers." I laughed out loud at this pretentious nothing speak. They're saying nothing - with some lovely background video.

Having ranted... I'm not sure I can stretch that high for a new apsc - my KP will have to do. If I had 2000 I would probably get a K1 ii (or wait for the iii ?? here's hoping!)

I'm looking for pro service to scan 6x7 transparencies to hi res jpegs - advice plz?

Hi - as in the title.

My Father in Law has 100's of 6x7 transparencies - many of which are excellent and he wants to try to save/scan the best of these.

Can anyone suggest either

(a) pro services that will do this for a cost? (UK preferably)

(b) scanners or tech that might allow someone to scan 6x7 slides (mostly mounted) to a high quality?

Thanks

Advice pls - 135mm smc m only shoots wide open on KP body - do i need to adapt?

OK GUYS - I HAVE FOUND THE REASON - AND I FEEL SO SILLY!

i have been shooting a lot of manual lenses in the past 6 months - some are M42 and some are these SMC M lenses... Turns out I have been shooting the SMC M lenses wide open all the time! They all work as you say - i've just tested them again and they're all working EXACTLY AS YOU SAY THEY SHOULD - and I feel pretty silly.

I think I didn't notice for 2 reasons
(1) I tend to shoot wide open a lot - and so just set the aperture ring to wide open - hence no issue
(2) I have shot a lot of M42 lenses (much more than these SMC M lenses) - and so of course, the aperture ring works manually on all M42 lenses all the time

So I haven't noticed how these SMC M lenses worked differently.

VERY SORRY FOR WASTING YOUR TIME - BUT THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE - AND I HAVE LEARNED SOME REALLY GREAT INFORMATION ABOUT HOW TO USE THESE LENSES.

I have to say - I have been using Pentax SLR and DSLR for years - but only got back into pentax manual lenses in the past 12 months. I love these forums.
Thanks

Hi Steve
Yes - it really helps a lot... but i've noticed something strange between my SMC M lenses... is this normal...

Both my SMC M 28 pentax lens and SMC M 50 f1.7 lens work fine in Av mode - including full manual aperture control - no need to use M mode, or stop down metering.

But my SMC M 135mm f3.5 (just bought today!) - only seems to allows aperture control in M mode - aperture stops down only for shooting!

I'd love to know why the 2 smaller pentax lenses work fine - and allow full aperture control with the ring - but the 135mm doesn't. Is it that pin at the back of the 135?

---------- Post added 08-09-20 at 10:01 AM ----------

Thanks. Here's some photos. I am sure they are all genuine pentax smc lenses - and the aperture shutter lever at the rear of the lens works on all 3 of them.
Incidentally - I could also use my 35mm f2 smc m lens on the KP in Av mode no problems too (but I sold that a while ago)

Edited above to show pics of 28mm 50mm and 135mm - all genuine, fully working SMC M lenses

Hi. Thanks for that. Actually I have 28mm smc m and 50mm smc m lenses - both work fine in Av mode as well as manual mode. And both have fully working aperture rings on my KP body.

This 135mm lens aperture ring works 100% fine when OFF the camera... but I think that the pin at the back of the lens is connecting with something on the KP body I can actually see the blades open to wide open as I screw lens onto the k mount.

OK. Thanks. I've tried green button in manual mode - and it seems to work ok. Will it shoot at correct aperture?

Hi - as in title - advice needed.

I picked up a great quality 135mm f3.5 smc m (k mount) lens... which i've got on my KP body.
But the aperture switch/lever at the back of the lens seems to connect with something on the kP body - and only shoots wide open!

Any advice on how to adapt lens or what to do on KP to allow me to use the aperture ring on the lens manually please?

Thanks

Edit - Here are some photos to show my 3 lenses - the 28mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.7 both work in Av mode no worries.

Official Pentax m42 adapter wobble [fix]

I found a similar problem when mounting a Helios 44-2 onto the M42 adapter. The issue is that the body of the lens is not wide enough to touch the body of the camera - so it sits exclusively on the M42 adapter. The adapter has a bit of play, due to the small spring mechanism that keeps it in place.

My solution was to find a rubber "V Ring" washer - designed to fit onto a shaft of 43-48mm (the diameter of the rear end of the Helios is about 46mm) - then when it tightens onto the M42 adapter, the rubber is wide enough to press onto the camera body - hence creating a more secure fit and the wobble has gone!

HEre's the link to the UK company I bought my V Ring washer from (about 2.50 in 2020)

50mm/1.4 vs 55mm/1.8

Strange - in the PentaxForum Reviews the 55mm f1.8 has a better rating for SHARPNESS than the 50mm f1.4

Yet the comments here seem to say other wise. However there are over 180 reviewers who give the 55mm a 9.4 average for sharpness, whilst the 50mm only gets 9.2 (although 9,2 is pretty amazing too!)

lol

Abstract Any advice on better oil on water shots?

OK. I took the photo from the open top.

And the photo is focused on the oil on the surface of the water (which has bubbles in it).

Are you suggesting that I put the coloured glass marbles underneath the tub? It's just that it will be much harder to shine any light through them to make them appear colourful?

Thanks

Sorry, I may not have been clear. There is no glass on top. The glass is just the container that the water, marbles and oil are in.

It is lifted off the ground by some books either end, and illuminated from various angles by lights.

Cheers

Battery life is an issue without the extra cost of a grip.

Plus 2 card slots

Thanks. I'm using static lights. Mostly led torches with baking parchment diffuser. Shining through various colours of shower gel! Very Heath Robinson!

Also, I realise the glass tray was not 100% clean, hence the white steaks.

And it's the bubbles I'm hoping to clean up... When I swirled them, I caused too many little bubbles. Looks too fussy
