Exactly.

From Adobe's standpoint, they are renting 2000 dollars worth of software with up to the minute updates for 10 dollars a month. On the other hand, they really are locking people in and once they have fully established it, they will be able to increase their rates with impunity.

What is your hobby worth? 120 a year? 240 a year? 300 a year? When you say it in monthly amounts -- 15 or 20 dollars -- it doesn't sound like so much, but when you quantify what it is per year and the fact that there is no convenient stopping place, it really will add up.

Any time you switch your model of distribution, some folks will be happy and some upset. If you are a person who uses the full spectrum of Adobe products -- Premiere, Photoshop, and Lightroom -- then this is a crazy good deal. If, on the other hand, you buy elements and lightroom every five to six years, then it isn't such a good deal.

The real question is why they are stopping selling free standing licenses for Lightroom. The answer to me is that it is simply a money grab -- Adobe's attempt to get people (like me) to pay their fair share for stuff they don't really want.

I understand that too, but even the process of downloading Lightroom will take a couple of hours. I'd far rather have a disk to install it with. ;)

I don't think anyone is confused. The problem is that if I have spent time with an image adjusting it in Lightroom, using their paid subscription model, and then let it go, if I decide I want to tweak something on one of my RAW images, I am back to square one. Yes, I still have the original raw file and I could open it anything from RAW Therapee to Gimp to whatever, but it isn't simply a matter of making a tweak -- adjusting a crop or bumping a slider any more. It is starting from the ground up to try to get to the same spot I was already at. Do that with many images and you will be frustrated.

But primes are completely different from zooms. Primes in the past are going to be good, particularly if you are stopped down a little and don't mind dealing with manual focus. On the other hand, zooms have really improved a lot with computer design. No one in the 80s would have thought of making a 16-300 super zoom. No one was making anything resembling the 15-30 f2.8 zooms of today.

I do think coatings have improved some as well, but Pentax coatings have always been good and so an SMC lens of the past is going to out perform a lot of other brands lenses of a similar age.

But why not go to a shop and try out the newer zooms and see for yourself?

The second one feels dark to me, but I already brightened it a bunch in Lightroom (it was hand held after dusk) and when I go any brighter it felt like it detracted from the mood of the image.

My current download speed from the web is 4.7 Mbps and upload speed is .47 Mbps and that is the fastest service that I can get where I live. The idea of storing stuff in the cloud just doesn't work in many rural settings.

As for the cost, I would like that to be my choice. Photography is a hobby for me. I have four kids and want to be able to take photos of them and process them as well as working with the landscape images I take, but I don't want to commit to paying ten dollars a month (or whatever Adobe decides to raise it to down the road) in perpetuity. I understand that from Adobe's standpoint that is great. If they screw something up and their software gets all buggy for awhile or they don't do any significant upgrades for ten months, I am still paying in order to process my images. I am saving for college and doing a number of other things and I don't know that "investing" that money in Lightroom is the best use of it.

I suppose for the foreseeable future I'll use Lightroom 6 -- that'll save plenty and down the road I may investigate one of the other options that still offers free standing software (I find Lightroom to be slow and freezes at times anyway).

Your chance of "seeing" these lenses this year probably will increase significantly if you use psychedelic drugs. Otherwise at this point my guess would be spring of next year.

I think zooms are the area where there have been the most improvements over time, whereas aside from some fringing issues, primes from the past definitely still keep up with modern lenses quite well. If you are shooting stopped down, it will be harder to see differences in lenses as well.

I think there are two things here. Lens profiles and camera profiles.

I was using Lightroom 5 when the K-1 was released (I think). It did not contain any K-1 profiles for awhile after its release, nor did it have lens profiles for the DFA 24-70 or 15-30. If you shot DNG files (not PEF) you could still open the images in Lightroom, they just didn't necessarily have the auto adjustments or profiles applied. I bought Hue Light color profiles for the camera and it worked fine. I think I could have imported the lens profiles from elsewhere and continued to use Lightroom 5 long term.

The same will probably be true for Lightroom 6. I think there are folks still using older generations of Lightroom than that. They just have to shoot DNG and either buy or create their own profiles for newer cameras.

I actually still take photos, but honestly, I get more feedback on Flickr than I do on Pentax Forums. Doing a Single In challenge does help too. But the photography posting side of the forum definitely isn't as busy as the rumor side of the forum and when there aren't any real rumors than things are a bit slow.

It is questionable how much benefit you get from upgrading Lightroom every new release. From 5 to 6 there were some tweaks of different tools, photomerge and HDR were added, and lens profiles, but actually performance slowed down some. At the same time, I do more than 95 percent of my editing in Lightroom and only go to Elements for big or tricky clone jobs. Clearly Adobe doesn't feel like they are making enough money from someone like me...

This sucks. That's all there is to it. I live in a very rural area where my upload and download speed are both pretty low (probably similar to Steve's). I currently am using Lightroom 6 and it meets my needs. Typically I have upgraded six to nine months after a new release -- mainly giving Adobe a chance to sort out bugs (which always seem to be present on new releases).

Adobe is afraid that too many people are buying Lightroom every two to three years and avoiding their subscription and they hope by doing this they can lock them in to paying 10 dollars a month forever. I just don't see it.

I just think it is being neglected. If I were them, I would start over. Maybe keep the premiere gallery but reboot the rest of it. Have links to instagram and Facebook. Curate it better. It is fine if there is only a ten percent approval rate or even lower, just so that the images that do get through are top of the line (better than good, each one should stand out).

I suppose it would be an awfully big project to start it over again and might make some people upset along the way.

I'd probably get a K70. Looks like a significant bump in high iso performance to me compared to the K3 generation cameras. I would figure out how to get the aperture block repaired. It is still a really good camera and certainly it can't hurt to mess around with it and try to fix it -- it isn't useful at all at this point except for lenses with aperture rings used in manual mode so why not try it? It would be a nice back up camera for down the road.

Maybe so. At the same time, I can't imagine they sell very many of the 16-50 f2.8 lenses with the negative press it has gotten over the years and refresh could rehab its image a bit. The 50-135 and 60-250 are excellent lenses optically already and it feels like with an adjustment in in lens motor they could be faster at auto focusing.

Be that as it may, it certainly is lower on the list of things for Ricoh to take care of.

I think that's a good start. In particular, as you use your zoom, if there are focal lengths that you really like or that you are missing (wider, longer) you can fill those in with primes or other lenses. I think you will have a great time shooting -- there's nothing like welcoming a new life into your home.

I stopped posting to PPG quite awhile ago. It felt like Pentax had sort of given up on it. It used to be curated -- not only did you have to get a certain number of votes to get in, but someone from Pentax had to look at your image and think it was worth including. I don't think that happens any more and a lot more photos are passed through.

I still think it could be a great sales piece for Pentax, but it is hard to know how they could do it going forward. It feels like there are a lot more mediocre photos that have gotten in and I always thought the whole point was to showcase the best.
