Change bitrate for Pentax video mode?

DSLRs are much better than video cameras at the same price range. (Excluding Black Magic offerings of course)

Anyway, while the Canons and Panasonics are capable of quality good enough for the big screen, Pentax barely offers good enough for broadcast. That's my only issue.. Do they really want to be that behind on video? Unlike Canon/Panasonic/Sony, they have nothing to lose by making an awesome video recorder of a DSLR. Magic Lantern recently hacked the 5D to record RAW at 24fps, if Pentax had this a standard or even better, ProRes, then without a doubt videographers will be jumping on. The only issue that would concern them is the K Mount.

K7 didn't have manual control..?

Seriously though, RAW recording will be arriving on the Canons through Magic Lantern. I might just jump over if it goes on the lower ends too.. :/

I believe the SR on the K30/K01 doesn't work the same as on the K5. I think its digital stabilization as opposed to sensor shift, can't remember where I read this.

Well unfortunately bitrate is not the only thing that affects the quality of the video, increasing the K30s bitrate to 100mbps will not necessarily make it better than the K5's video. The only real person that can make a big change is Pentax, getting one hacker to work on the Pentax's is not viable as it would take an excessively long time for them to get something done.

Magic Lantern is doing wonders for Canon at the moment though. Biggest news out at the moment is that they can do RAW video (only for 1 second at the moment, but theres a good chance it will be no limit after they work on it more).

I didn't shoot the video... I found it on youtube and used it as an example because its straight from the camera uploaded.

I'm sorry but your clearly in no position to talk about video if you can't even tell the quality issues with it. Next your going to tell me the in built mic is awesome :/

Please show us some of your marvelous interesting and creative work o wise one. Also tell me about how HD cameras need a tripod. And how the K01/K30 has such amazing DR in video mode (Have you even tried recovering any over exposed highlights? You can't.).

Heres a few links that you should to read before you attempt to discuss which videos are better

Just to add, K30 video is H264 at 17mbps and the K5 is MJEG at 100mbps.

While you have a point, YT does not compress it that much. Would be nice if someone here could upload a video shot from their K30/K01, I would like to see what the DR is like on them.

I didn't say you couldn't grade them, I said the K5 was better. Maybe you don't know what artifacts to look for, because the 2nd video is full of them..

You Tube

Heres a video sample from the K30, if you can't tell its video lacks detail and is processed badly, well then..

I believe someone was attempting to hack the K5 but they gave up on it and hacked a different camera. Of course the video mode is fine for most people, its just for people who buy DSLRs with video in mind, it doesn't cut it when there are much better options.

Sorry but the K01/K30 videos look awful... They are so heavily compressed, its hard for me not to look at artifacts. The codec it uses is terribly implemented and the K5's one wins all round on quality. The K30 footage must be really terrible to grade, whereas I know the K5's is one of the best out of the DSLRs.

Also, Pentax can increase the bit rate but they probably don't give a s*t because the K5 is old and they will probably think its not worth their while. K5 currently records MJPEG at around 80-100mbps, which provides for good quality, I think if they done anything they should improve DR in video mode. While the chroma information from the footage is good the luminance is not great although on par with the other DSLRs.

K-x : 122.5mm x 91.5mm x 67.5mm

100d: 116.8mm x 90.7mm x 69.4mm

They aren't too far off each other. But yeah if Pentax is still going to market their FF as 'the most compact', I hope its not only marginally more compact. They could simply put a FF sensor in the K5 body couldn't they?

Maybe they will provide a real upgrade to the K5? With an 's' version, that's two cameras.

The new 645D, thats three.

A new entry level, thats four.

FF, five?

Well we will see, this month doesn't have much left.

Emailed him back, everything I mentioned;

QuoteQuote:

Firmware updates to K-5/K-5 II;
Full video manual control, much like in the K-01. This would also be great if we could get manual control even with the old Pentax M lenses but I understand that can cause issues because the current K mount no longer uses a mechanical link to read the aperture settings on those lenses. Another thing is to be able to change ISO while recording, no other camera has this and it would be an excellent feature.
Video capture at 24/25/30fps, No one would take the camera seriously (video-wise) without these frame rates, due to Europe having 25fps as a standard and USA having 30fps.
Video recording button. Something like using the Fx or RAW button to start video recording or enter video mode.
Crop marks in video mode, which is basically an overlay of lines to show different aspect ratios, a bit like this: http://images.inosak.org/magiclantern.jpg
Allow an area to be always zoomed in to allow for better MF, much like this: http://cs6237.userapi.com/u16007354/docs/9254b673a63a/magic_lantern_design1_display1_2.jpg
User select-able bit rates for the MJPEG codec, it currently averages about 70-110mbs which is great for high quality videos! It would be nice if we could go to its max though for the absolute best quality we can get.
HDMI Out to monitor the footage not just playback

Future Video updates;
Hot Pixel removal for stills and video
More frame rates for lower res, such as 120fps+ in VGA mode
Pixel Binning technique to improve video quality (This would also improve iso noise in video mode, the only DSLR I know of that does this is the Canon 5D Mark III)
44.1 or 48khz audio recording
Headphone jack for actually monitoring the audio (The K-01 allows your control Audio gain but there is no way to actually monitor it)
Focus peaking during recording
A few users has shown that they do not like the digital SR in the K-01, and they prefer it without stabilization because of that.
Clean HDMI Out (So we can record footage externally)
Recording to ProRes or RAW(this is a far stretch, it would be an great thing to Cinematographers but we would not be upset or surprised if we did not get this as MJPEG is pretty good)
Waveform monitor
To be honest, everything you could possibly want in terms of control is in the Canon firmware add-on Magic Lantern, so if they were to look at everything that offers they would have a great idea of excellent video control and monitoring.

I did also talk about the WR Flash and a few other things but those are the main points. I did just add that Magic Lantern has everything there in the end :p

I guess we just wait for a response from the factory now, if we get one

Okay, so I sent an email to Pentax UK about bringing a firmware update to the K5 regarding the video mode and lack of manual control among a few other video related things. I got a reply today;

So I think we should do just that. I have made an online petition just so we can express how many users are showing interest for this so if you would like to welcome a more serious video mode please go ahead and sign here: Petition Pentax to improve video mode

Although I asked him mainly about updating the K5 I think we could add suggestions for future bodies.

The current suggestions I have gathered are as follows:
  • Full manual control of video. If possible, able to change ISO while recording like the GH3 does. (Also I hear the K01 only has manual control with auto aperture lenses? So manual control with all lenses would be good)

  • Possibly 60fps at 1080p

  • Pixel Binning to improve video quality mode (this also improves noise)

  • Focus Peaking during video

  • Better sound recording quality and proper audio control like in the K-01

  • Recording to ProRes/RAW (!)

  • Extra battery grip with XLR inputs (!)

  • Higher bitrates for K01/30 / Choice of MJPEG or H264 in camera

  • HDMI Output

Things with (!) next to them may be a stretch too far, the MJPEG in the K5 is much better quality than the H264 in the K01/30 even though it creates massive file sizes. I think its the only dslr codec that uses 4:2:2 subsampling as well. I would personally love to see a new mirrorless centered around video.

So, any thoughts?

Got a reply on my email guys

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your e-mail and your feedback regarding the video operation of the Pentax K-5. While we are just the UK office and do not have any control over the development or release of firmware, we are fortunate in that we have short reporting lines back to the factory. This means requests and suggestions from consumers are easily feedback for consideration.

I will pass your comments to the factory and let you know of their response.

If you would be willing to share your thoughts about what other features may be developed I would be very interested to read them and pass them onto the factory also. Although we cannot guarantee any would be developed we do know that they would be considered. Other suggestions from consumers have been adopted and are now available on current cameras.

Kind regards,

Steve
